1241658 No.1241658 [Reply] [Original]

I'm entering the final year of my Electrical Engineering Technologist program at my local college. The College I'm in offers a bridging program where I can go to a University ranked 34th in Canada for 2.5 years and get an Electrical Engineering degree.

Does anyone in the Electrical field have any suggestions for what would be the best path job-advancement wise?

I did the same thing and graduated 6 years ago. My situation was a bit different as I already had an electrician ticket but I'll give you my 2 cents.

Right out of school I went to work for a large engineering firm doing drafting/design work. For me working 9-4:30 in an office was a soul crushing experience and I will hopefully never have to do it again. That said not all electrical engineering work is office based. I worked for a couple years for a very large electrical equipmemt manufacturer doing field service work. I worked along side electrical engineers doing the exact same work for the same pay.

Now my current employer is paying me full wages to go through the instrumentation program. So what I'm getting at is there is no shortage of opportunitys with your current education, and another 2.5 years of school is no small thing when you could be out getting work experience and making money.

My advice would be to take a few years and go to work, the opportunity to go back will always be there.

In b4 Reddit spacing fuck off I like paragraphs

around these parts we hate on you if you are a moron, or even worse, and expert who is full of shit. your formatting is irrelevant.

I greatly appreciate your response. Are there any other skills outside of your schooling that you learned or wished you learned, such as coding or something?

It does have some form of co-op program but if you're not native, a woman, or have family working for the company you aren't going to get it

completing EET knocks off apprenticeship hours or so I was told. From my experience on my coop electricians need more electronics knowledge.

coding is something I am just now getting back into, but def dont worry about it until your done school. I'm mainly learning it for home projects and such though, most of the equipment your going to be working on has proprietary software and very little of it is text based. The school doesnt stop when you get your diploma, your employer is going to be sending you to all kinds of additional training depending on what you are doing.

One pays 40-50k the other pays 70-80k. I'll say it's probably better to finish college now because later you won't have time to do more school.

I work as an apprentice electrician. There's electrical engineers in my class because there's no jobs for em. Might be different in other countries though

I'm just a software developer who wants to study electrical engineering.

How much practical experience do you have?

Have you created a board with high speed interconnects like PCIe 3.0, SATA 6gbits, XGMII, DDR4?
Did you do FPGA or ASIC development?

I'm asking because those are the only things I actually care about. I already have some basic knowledge in electronics and merely need to practice my existing skills with the exception of what I mentioned above.

Start an apprenticeship and become an electrician. With your college background plug actually being able to do the work you will go far.

>> No.1243297

>>1243251
Don't do this, look for work as a tech and ask if they will give you apprenticeship hours with it if you want to do that.

what is "tech"?

>> No.1244838

>>1244164
Tech is short for technician. A technician tends to act like the hands of an engineer. So while designing a circuit for a new phone would be an engineers job. The technician job would be to solder and test the circuit.

He replied to the OP while greentexting that, which is the format used for bitching, so if he wasn't, he doesn't know how to post on 4chan. He brought up /pol/ out of nowhere, which is typically done by reddit users, who are obsessed with it. Using "you're not on" means he was either condemning the poster he replied to for supposedly acting like /pol/ (which he clearly wasn't), or that's the only board he's been on himself and he doesn't know that the whole site complains about redditspacing. None of these retards even know what redditspacing is to begin with, since the OP and >>1241665 didn't do it, but >>1241668 did. Furthermore, his filename is using the imgur format, which is what reddit uses. Therefore, it's quite obvious where that faggot is from and why his post is formatted incorrectly.

That sort of faggotry is the reason why innocent bystanders sometimes get caught in the crossfire, like >>1241704. Paragraphs aren't what the term refers to. It refers to the practice of failing to use paragraphs and group related sentences together due to the excessive abuse of double spacing.

Greentexting is used for quoting another post you enormous faggot. He was directly addressing op's hangup on reddit spacing, essentially doing the same thing you are--telling the faggot to ignore it and not even mention it.

>> No.1244889

>>1244879
OP didn't mention the spacing. The first reply did, and that was obviously a different person. Greentext is also used for bitching, especially when it's not quoting the post the reply link points to.

EEfag here 110k/yr us$.

Check the government. Down here they have a stay-in-school program that will pay you and pick up part of the college tab. Plus they pay for a masters depending on what you are doing.

Also I have to post this pic.
