yeah, that's not because of capitalism, it's because of an oligarchical system intentionally obscuring information.

Hospitals charge 10x what they need to because they actually only get paid 1/4th of what the official charge is by insurance, and have to spend a ton of money jumping through hoops and on lawyers to get it, plus people sue doctors at the drop of a hat because they're forced to do care based on insurance company standards instead of medical ethics.

study in SoCal found up to a 96% discount if you negotiated with billing and paid cash upfront, but a lot of hospitals are assholes about it.

Although they kind of have to be, otherwise insurance companies screw them.

But yeah, probably should be more like $700, mostly to cover complications, follow up visit, antibiotic prescription etc, and your share of the hospital costs and uninsured people they have to treat by law.

edit: just looked it up, cost for uninsured patient should be $800-3000. abt 300-500 less if you go to a doctor's office instead of a hospital, and on the low end if you use a local anesthetic instead of general.

So yeah, you got the official chargemaster opening bid price that they ask insurance companies for, not the actual amount they expect to get and you can if you offer cash and shop around.
