Hey diy can you help me talk some sense into my mom and her sister? They insist on wanting to buy a large land and build a home made out of shipping containers on it, im not trying to bait i just need some reasons with facts to back them up to show them why this is a bad idea

Devil's in the details. Assuming they want electricity/plumbing/modern conveniences/etc, they'll probably have to get that professionally done. Expensive, especially if miles from civilization. Not an engineer that deals with construction, but imagine you'll want a foundation of some sort. If they want windows, that will be a non-trivial task. If they are above ground, you'll probably need insulation. If below ground, gotta dig the hole and make sure it doesn't flood when it rains. Moving the containers into position after laying the foundation won't be trivial easier. At that point, you spent enough money you may as well build a real house. Or even just buy an RV/camper.

But if they're willing to live like hobos in a box don't know how to convince them anon.

Nothing wrong with a shipping container home, mate.

At least don't let your family bury any of them.

Well, for one thing you can build a wood or even brick building of the same dimensions for significantly less money than it costs to by the container and have it moved out to your chosen plot in the boonies. It also doesn't cost a great deal more to go from tiny house dimensions up to small regular detached house dimensions. I assume the main misconception involved here is about the cost savings (there are none) and the ease of building (it's not easier to make a shipping container liveable than it is to make a purpose built cabin/house).

No matter what the structure is, your big expenses are always going to be land, foundation, water, plumbing, electricity. Tiny house only makes sense if for some reason you happen to own a tiny slice of land that you really really want to squeeze a home on to.

I think the only benefit of having a container home would be its modularity and ease of being able to move it to another location. But if you've made a container home such that it can be thrown about like any old container and has modular detachable plumbing and electricity you're already looking at an economic nightmare, not to mention a collection of safety inspections and red tape.

Unless you just like the aesthetic, which I guess is fine too.
>>1180457 looks pretty cool, though I've no idea how practical it is.

Has anybody done a vertical container home/tower yet?

Easy enough to do but you have to frame and insulate them. Lots of small business places are using them. Google is your friend.

there's no reason not to use shipping containers as a dwelling, just don't use them to make bunkers.

Film it.
Reality TV
It would be priceless

But if you really are serious, do the math with them. Get a real price from a broker. Show them the budget. Explain that a container will still need studs and drywall to be livable inside.
