Anyone into smartmirrors? Its my current project.
the infopage is written in html/css/php. I know there are systems like mirror.os but that would be boring. after finishing the rough setup like software part, ill build a decent case and add a half-mirror to it. opions?

Bumping for interest. I don't know much about them, but I'm planning on making a smart mirror in about a month or two.

Do I need a special type of mirror? I was thinking of tying it to the light switch in the bathroom, how long does it take to boot?

I'm "planning *on* it."

I've got 3 significant projects, more than full time job, and closing on a house this week. Forgive me if I can't manage time as well as you and your busy high school schedule, but it would be nice to have a little repository of information here and ready for the next project. It will help me get off to a quick start once the house and 1 of the 3 projects is completed.

Kids like you are exactly the kind of people turning this board in to a shit show. Why are you even here?

I actually recently made a smart mirror as a project with someone else. The hardware part is actually pretty easy. The type of mirror you need is mirrored plexiglas or another type of half-mirror.
Pic related is the unfinished app with a piece of mirror on it to demonstrate.

4chan is a starting place, not a last resort. I'm sure you don't remember, but diy used to be a helpful place until people like you started showing up.

Case in point: if you're not interested in helping, why are you still in this thread? What's that? Because you're on spring break and your mom's husband won't let you borrow the car?

Seriously, why are you in this thread?

About how much did you end up spending when the project was complete?

Also, looks like there is a piece of film peeling from behind the plexiglass in that pic. Is half mirrored just another name for 50% reflective film on regular plexiglass or glass? Any problems cutting it to size?

>> No.1148647

>>1148643
Well for price, we used a raspberry pi we already owned, a old monitor that someone was throwing out, and the mirror was less than $30. Whats nice is that you can get them cut to order, so no cutting on you part. The piece of film was a protective layer that came when it shipped, it's supposed to come off.

>> No.1148689

Total noob to the raspberry pi. This idea may sound dumb, but is it something I can reasonably do? I want a smart mirror that can take your picture and display it through the mirror. I have a couple of reasons for this including being able to see the back of your head in the mirrir, as well as messing with drunk people in the bathroom. Can I easily configure it to take a picture every second or so, and keep displaying those pictures sequentially so you would effectively see a trail of your movements in the mirror?

Again, you don't need point out how dumb it is. I already know. Just looking for tips on using a camera and some memory with a pi, and opinions on how to best implement this.

>>1148689
yep, its possible. but keep in mind that these ~80% mirrors darken the pictures. thats the reason why everyone uses white text on black background. as seen in anons post:

A good point. Perhaps it would be possible to write a function dedicated to increasing the brightness of a picture. then the software flow is to snap the picture, store in memory, brighten picture and save again, display the picture as part of a series, then delete and start the cycle over. I feel like I can make C do anything I want, but I've never written a picture filtering function before. I guess I have some homework to do now.

as a mirror you could hide it.

Has anyone considered:

Viewer
.
Polarized plane (from LCD monitor)
----------------
LCD plane (without backlighting layer or cover)
----------------
Full Mirror
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Wall

This would reduce the smart mirror to grayscale only, but would allow greater contrast in the final image while keeping full reflectivity. Not to mention using the color bits would increase the effective resolution by 3x if you could code the vga output correctly and understood where the rgb pixels are in relation to pixel center.
