Funny.. Looks like their doing it the right way... Notice the poured concrete in the picture? Once that sets up. Betcha they pour another layer stacking them. There for the container is merely a form for the concrete to cast around.. Shit you could do this with a giant block of Styrofoam.

I don't believe that's concrete, it's pea gravel for drainage and the vent pipes and entry shaft(?) make it clear they think this will be a valid bunker.

Plenty of heavy wall box section on top to transfer the load to the frame of the container where it's strongest.
Angle iron on the sides to stop them from bowing in.
6" pipe for ventilation, one inlet one exhaust.

I like how leddit has done what /diy/ could not achieve for years: first to build an actual underground bunker as "experiment", and then put up a whole textbook of reasons why this is a stupid idea and should never have taken place.

I think we can safely pronounce underground containers a dead meme. Now we can just point all future threads back to this one and call it a day.

Idiots don't even know why they want a bunker. Containers all look the same inside, so place one aboveground where it's fucking usable as a shop etc.

Notice you don't see many aboveground bunkers copying actual military designs because children want to bury shit for no reason.

Corten corrodes in atmosphere so unless you THOROUGHLY seal your idiotbox it's a corrosion trap. Ever look underneath a container? They have bottoms which are not designed to be sumps.

If you are curious about containers, fucking buy one and use it as a shop for your other projects. If you are fit to do advanced projects the container cost is trivial. About 2500 gets you a forty foot High Cube in WWT condition. 5500 got be a one-trip HC with doors on both ends in new condition. It's a nice ride-through mosickle garage.

Well, the whole problem with shipping container bunkers is that the sides resist almost no load, so they will fail by soil pressure buckling the sides. Shipping containers are breddy good at taking loads on the top corners. If you dug a hole, placed the container, built a rebar frame and poured the concrete into a self-supporting structure that used the shipping container as a form you would probably be alright.

but like >>1134663 said, might as well just do concrete.

I want to build a "shipping container bunker", except that the container has a hidden entry into the bunker, and the container looks like a small workshop/office. Underneath would be a proper bunker with an arched roof and a couple of rooms. I'd make sure it had a showershitter too.

Basically this is what he did (if my memories are correct):

Container on the ground, made the inside looks like disco with uv lights and shit, put a tiny fan and tiny pipe leading outside for "ventilation", and made a hatch opens upwards on the top and a ladder goes below. Then he dug a hole in the ground with zero reinforcement, put some gravel down there, put the kitout container down onto gravel, then I forgot what filled the sides.

I guess you can sort of guess what it looks like from the reddit text.

even that is overly simplified and not entirely true, the sides needs to be retaining walls and the metal top won't hold heavy stuff without structure over it i.e. it is useless

Honestly, if it was done properly, it would.

In my industry we use custom reinforced boxes, 53' long Reinforced every 4' with i beams encased in box section.
Difference being an empty 40' container is 2.5T and one of our containers dry is 10T.

If you want to survive a nuclear bomb concrete won't cut it.
First of all your would need to brace the internals of the container before pouring. Concrete is more dense than dirt, if dirt fucked it so will concrete.
Secondly you need a huge amount of gravel to absorb the shockwave from an explosion. Solid concrete poured into hard dirt will transfer all the forces and crack your concrete to fuckery.
Also if you want to survive a direct hit or a bunker buster or some shit you better get digging and saving your pocket money because you will need to go fucking deeeeeeeeeeep. Also most important don't be near any targets of interest or tell anyone about it. Disturbed ground is visible from satellite imagery, that's how they are finding old pyramids and shit now so dig horizontally if possible or under tree cover
