Back when I was about 19 I had a very strong interest in locksmithing and things of that nature. I'd suggest buying a small starter set like this one http://www.lockpicks.com/mpxs-08withbook-mpxs-08b.aspx

There are some cheaper ones online but having something handy to read on paper is always good. Buying a pad lock is good practice then when you have that down move on to door knobs with a 5 pin tumbler. After the knob I moved on to making bump keys.
