ok been thinking about making a laser with burning capabilities
have 2 dvd drives from old pcs & 1 from a dvd player

something like this
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-burning-laser-for-CHEAP/

"but" i need it to fit in to something about the size of a sharpy
have a finger operated on/off switch
&
it would need to be an accurate fine pinpoint laser
for what i want to do with it

any ideas or advice

also if anyone has made one what all would it burn

thanx

>2 dvd drives from old pcs & 1 from a dvd player

The laser diodes in these devices are not designed to sustain that kind of output. They burn out very quickly when pushed that hard.

>it would need to be an accurate fine pinpoint laser

Collimation isn't going to be great on an overdriven DVD diode.

Ok, I have a feeling that really don't want to know, but I'll ask anyways... OP, what the hell is a "cautery branding"?

>> No.99306

What lasers burn really depends on the wavelength of the laser and the absorption spectrum of the material you are trying to burn.

See this for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NCDqpKeNHA&feature=related

The laser burns off the paint and the graphite, but the white paper completely reflects all of it.

DVD burner/ regular DVD lasers use infrared wavelengths which you can't even see. The laser may be powerful enough to blind you, but you won't know it until it's too late. Also how well skin will respond to IR is questionable. In the industry they use excimer UV lasers for skin and eye treatments.

Stop before you give some one skin cancer.

cautery branding or electro cautery branding
is a brand done with an electric medical cautery unit or disposable cautery pen (pens suck) like what is use to seal cuts / stop bleeding
the tip gets hella hot & you use it the draw on flesh
you can do a lot more detailed work with one then you can do with strike branding
using hot irons

but the smell if enough to gag a maggot

thanx for the info

>>99309
dam right
even with a mask & a fan smelling burning for 2 or 3 hours sucks

yeah disposable cautery pens suck
you can only do small pieces before they burn out & they don't get as hot as desk top or wall unit
so the brands don't tend to be permanent
they will usually fade out in a year or two
