I'm not sure if this should be on /diy/ or /ck/, but I need help making some fake bones; enough to produce a rough approximation of a human skeleton.

Back story: my brother and I do Sunday night dinner together most weeks as a way to keep up with each other. We alternate turns cooking each week. Over a couple of years, we've both developed some decent cooking and presentation skilz, and have tried to out do each other several times. Easter is going to be my next turn.

Suffice it to say, neither of us are religious people. Even still, I'm planning a religious themed easter dinner. Basically, I want to build a human corpse to represent jesus, and then the different courses would be served from the corpse directly. For example, I want to cut the head open with a dremel (largely for show, not much real cutting) and remove the 'brain' to serve as a pate and crackers course. I want to slice in to the abdomen (and a plastic bag concealed within) and scoop out the contents to serve as a Ramen with mixed vegetable course. Etc...

Anyway, I have this recipe for 'fauxtex' which will make plenty of fake skin to cover the corpse with. I really just need an easy and cheap way to make the skeleton. I don't even need a whole skeleton; I'm thinking just a long spine section, the rib cage, and the pelvis. The serving area is only so big. I already have a plastic skull that I can make the head out of.

I guess my real question is how can I make the rib cage and pelvis? It has to be accuratly shaped enough so that when you drape the fake skin over it, the final appearence is real enough. Can I make some plaster of Paris casts for the ribs? Can I use animal bones avaliable at the butcher? Can I do a little of both and fuse them together somehow? I looked up plastic skeletons that I could disassemble, but the cheapest one that looked like it would do the job was $100 and out of stock. I tried party city, but they don't have anything Halloween at this time of year.

>> No.964172

Wet some pasta and let it dry out. If you want, get a balloon mold of sorts and wrap the pasta around it so the ribcage sits nice and evenly. You might need to make a frame for the pelvis(with pasta of course) and drape large areas with pasta sheets. If you're serving them with something wet, you can try putting foil or cling film as a layer between the food and the bones, or wrap the bones themselves.

Sounds like a fun time, OP.

Not a bad idea. Wasn't there someone here recently who had to build a bridge out of pasta? I wonder how well that turned out.

And it pretty much fits on the plastic skull.

I'll make the additional skin and blend it with the face. It's actually pretty easy to bond sections of this fauxtex together with just a hot knife. Can add nostrils and face details with the same technique.

>> No.964652

>>964018
This really all depends on how realistic you want it to be and how edible as well. If you would like the entire body for the most part to be edible, minus the plastic skull and gut bag you are planning, I would go with a variation of a noodle trick like >>964172 suggested

This will take a bit of time, but easily accomplishable by Easter...

1) First you are going to need a suitable model, so if you yourself or someone you know(if they are willing) has a suitable body type to the one you'd like to make:
you are going to need to make at least a basic plaster mold of the torso, upper arms, neck, groin, and upper legs (going off of the minimum space you were saying), you can do these in sections and join them later if you like.
>(the plaster mold can leave the back exposed, just the front and sides need to be formed)

2) when the plaster is set, dust it with flour, then take some plastic wrap and gently line the inside so there are no creases, try to form it to the contours the best you can.

3) now take your freshly made fauxtex, first pour it into the heavily detailed areas to allow the plastic wrap and fauxtex to settle into those areas better, then take a brush and start to paint the whole interior.
You will need to paint it in multiple layers so you can get a thicker skin on the sides that curl up and are semi even even in thickness.

So initially pour, paint out, up, and all around... Wait for it to at least set or completely dry... Paint on another layer... Repeat until you get the skin thickness you desire.

Make an extra sheet of fauxtex that will cover and slightly overlap the back hole, set aside until Easter.

>> No.964653

>>964652
4) now once the skin is made, keep it in the plaster, you still need bones.

Now take some dry noodles of your choice (my personal choice for this would be spaghetti, but it's your call), place them in luke warm salted water until they become pliable and bendy with just a touch of stiffness still to them.
>You want them to be soft enough to be able to contort and shape, but not floppy/worm like
Drain them, pat dry with a towel/paper towel, grab enough to be the thickness of a rib, then twist them so they have a spiral pattern like a rope.
Roll it in 2-3 layers of rice paper, then place it in your chest cavity where a rib should be, repeat until you have your rib cage, let your ribs dry out to become hard again
>note: if the body is going to be served on a tray/platter, the spine isn't really necessary
If you would like a spine, make sure you interlace the rib noodles before you twist so they will be longer to wrap all the way around, them use the same method to make the spine

Pelvis and other bones can be made similarly, but for the pelvis I'd suggest using Lasagna noodles wrapped around some bread

>> No.964654

>>964653

5) once bones are dry and food is all made and ready shortly before dinner on Easter, place food in designated spots , use bread as a filler in all the empty void area's, then take that sheet of fauxtex you set aside earlier and close up the back, fusing it in place with a hot knife.
>like i stated before, you can do this in sections then place them all together at this point before serving the Jesus for dinner.
Once the body is filled and the back is in place, flip over onto tray/table/serving platform/etc. And remove the plaster, then remove plastic wrap, join together any separate parts if needed.

----------------
Viola: you now have a 100% edible Jesus (mostly), fully enclosed and ready to cut into.

Enjoy

>if you would like a little extra show to it, place a ziploc bag of ketchup in the places where you would be cutting into before filling the body with bread.

Had some ok success with the soda bread bones. It was a pretty standard recipe that I modified slightly and will probably modify a little more.

4 cups flour
2 cups water
.75 tsp baking soda
.75 tsp baking powder

Exactly. In the original post I mentioned that I only need something that approximates a skeleton. This thing is still going to have a bowl in the pelvis and some other objects embedded in it which make it even less correct. Also, technically, it doesn't have enough ribs, the collar bone is mis-shaped, the sternum is all wrong, etc etc.

On the other hand, I don't think the picture is doing it justice either. From the top of the ribs to the bottom of the pelvis measures almost 3'. Thats about the same size as my ribs and pelvis and im 6'2". Looking at it sitting on the counter, it's actually kinda creepy. We'll see how it looks later with some skin on it.

While I've got some time to kill, here's what I learned.

When you're making the skin out of fauxtex, mix together a large batch of water and food coloring first, then use this pre-colored water to make the fauxtex. Otherwise there can be slight color variations from batch to batch that are really noticeable. You can see it on my dummy where the skin over the stomach doesn't match the skin over the chest.

Factor in a good amount of time for finishing up the body before guests arrive. I ran out of time so the skin on the arm wasn't anywhere near done, and I didn't have time to blend and join the skin between the chest and stomach.

If you're making the bread on a mold, like I did for the skull, don't remove the mold until you have to. I removed the little plastic skull, and everything looked good, but by the next morning it was shrinking, deforming, and cracking because of the way it was drying.
