sup /diy/ i heard there is a poormans air purifier using a boxfan from home depot and panel filter to tape right behind fan. Could it be effective? want my room to stop getting dusty after 1 week of cleaning

it wont be purifying the air by any means, but it will remove dust, albeit very inefficiently. make sure you get a filter that actually filters small particles.

>>889737
how effective could this be on reducing dust, assuming i get good filter

some.
too little information to respond.

And most box fans can't push air very well against resistance. They just get loud. An air filter flat across the surface will be inefficient. One /diy/ system that shows up is to use two, three or more filters in a box around the fan output.

inefficient referred to the fact that you're now using electricity continuously to filter the air, but nonetheless, if you move it around every once in a while, it should work just as well as your AC filter. I'd suggest getting a filter you can clean if its as bad as you say it is.

A poor mans air purifier is when you buy one used off of Craig's List or something, You can't make a decent one out of a box fan, they simply aren't made for it. By all means make a shitty one out of a box fan, if you are dead set on it. But seriously, just get a used one.

I don't know about an air purifier, but we use a bunch of these at work (Boat building) to filter fiberglass and carbon fiber dust from people grinding/cutting/etc.

Works great, they just tape a filter to the intake side of the box fan.

>Could it be effective
yes it is quite effective

unlike everyone talking out of their ass here i am actually one of the original makers on the original thread and actually made one

it collects dust alright, instead of 1 week cleaning it takes about 3-4 weeks to have the same level of dust

that is just my room anyway

One of these triple sided ones or summat?

Saw a vid on yt by some University that compared some expensive air filter vs a box fan with furnace filter attached. The results were very similar.

Oh boy, here we go.
It seems you missed the epic fan filter thread awhile back.
Unfortunately I have nothing saved from it but I do know some OC was generated and that there is an archive of the thread.

This?

I have a friend who uses half [the compressor side] of a car turbo, with a fucking 1/3 electric motor + pulley. with one of those "cut to size filters" on the outlet end of things held on with a pipe clamp. and uses it in his work place. seems like it works better then a box fan.. lol

Sucks from the filters and blows out the fan.

It's very effective. Air purifiers are just fans with filters after all. The difference is in filter effectiveness, pressure, and air flow, i.e., you could just buy better fans and filters and do a good job of sealing them. Avoid ionic, static cling, and cleanable filters or whatever the latest marketing nonsense is.

Note that the box fan uses WAAY less electricity than your AC or furnace.

Aww, man... But I love my ionic breeze!

Mainly because a friend who was moving gave it to me for free.

yes air cleaners are just fans with filters but BOX FANS by design are not designed to "build pressure" to be able to pull air thru a filter without it blocking airflow... these shitty fans are powerful enough to just move air to do what it was intended... but to use it as a filter you would need to use a better fan, or have multiple filters to create a space between the filter and fan so that it can actually pull some air thru it. its the equivalent of trying to suck a golf ball thru a garden hose.

>> No.891712

>>889732
That could create a fire hazard.

>> No.891714

hi all, original fan filter contributor here, what >>891701 said is true, the box fan does not provide enough air flow under pressure so the filter will be quite ineffective after a while (several months). The solution would be to use a new filter when it is just over half full.

The best solution is (if you have the money) is actually use one of those in-line fan filters for hydroponics/grow boxes, they are built to operate under pressure and they have specially made clinical shaped filters available, however they are carbon filters not HEPA or other types so they will not filter out viruses or other microscopic stuff BUT if your intent is just to reduce dust, then it is the best solution.

to reply >>891581 and >>891593, ion generators are nice to have, they literally use just a few watts max but they do have an effect on nano sized particles so it is always nice to have. (research shows ionised air kill viruses in the air in hospitals, this is proven) so it is not nonsense.
