hey /diy/
do you guys have any better ideas how to cool down your room on a 38*C heat?

Not the way in your pic. Expensive, and doesn't do much more than make your room humid as shit.
Get a fan or something.

>> No.868032

AC. The icebox fan only works if your room is isolated from your kitchen.

A couple of big box fans do nicely.... or an AC unit. These things can be found cheaply at walmart or pawn shops (check both, sometimes pawn shops can actually be higher than walmart for something used)

The key with box fans is to get a draft blowing through your house or apartment. Open two windows or doors leading outside on opposite ends of your place, put one box fan blowing in by one window, and then a box fan at the other end of the house blowing out. It makes a nice cool breeze through the whole house.

I had no AC one whole summer and two fans blowing a cool breeze throughout the house almost felt better than AC, like AC but with fresh air.

Two 20" box fans should be about $40.

They'll serve you well.

Bonus points if you buy washable filters for them.

OP if your room is fucking 38 degrees get a fucking AIRCONDITIONING

I mean, if you live where I live, where it is 30 degrees maybe 5 days in a year, i imagine it might not be worth the investment

but if its fucking 38 degrees, what are you waiting for??

Whatever you do, do NOT use dry ice with one of those. It may be colder, but will fill the room with CO2 and suffocate you.

ONLY use regular ice.

Which makes you cooler. You learned about convection in high school science. It doesn't make the ROOM cooler, but it cools you off.

Evaporative cooling. Aka what your body does naturally.

OP- get a fan. point at self. drink lots of water. You really, honestly, can't do much better then that without an AC unit. Or dumping water on yourself.

Underrated idea. The efficiency of the energy transfer from [Your Body] to [The Ice] is a fuckton more efficient when the ice is inside your body. All that stupid fan setup does is waste the cold [physics - heat sinking capacity] of the ice on the air around you.

It's airtight enough without all the windows and doors open to suffocate you, and if you've got all the windows and doors open while trying to cool the house, you're a retard who deserves to suffocate.

No it's not, because most of the cooling comes from the ice evaporating, not melting.

If you eat it, it melts then goes down the shitter, never getting a chance to evaporate.

Dry ice is sold in ~10lb bags (4.5 kg). The molar mass of CO2 is 44 grams which means there are roughly 100 moles in a bag. The molar volume of gases at STP is 22.4 liters. 100 moles * 22.4 liters = 2,240 liters or 2.24 cubic meters. That's only 5.6% - 7.5% of a normal bedroom, not to mention CO2 is heavier than air.

OP here
I live in the philippines and it reaches 30-34*C here in the city. But in my room / the whole second floor I get like 36-38*C of room temp. Ive always opened my windows and used fans but its quite dusty. I can't invest for an AC yet plus electricity heres quite costly. I temporarily stay downstairs since all the cool air stays there but I dont have any space for my things there, it's our kitchen.

Get copper tubing and do the following:

Get a large bowl of ice and water,
put one end of the copper tube into the water,
Mount the copper tube around the backside of your fan,
Put the other end of the copper tube above water level in the bowl and suck on this end until you got a steady stream

Solar Panel fans. Starts up as the sun arrives. You get the fan part in the shade. The water which is always a heat reducer under air flow - inside something metal, that is not exposed to the outside. Coke cans etc.... But if you can make it thinner so air passes quicker then that's better.

One of the best ways to reduce heat in the home is the "stack effect airflow". Google it, be surprised. A vent in the roof makes all the difference. At least under the eve of the roof at the highest point by the crown.

>> No.868924

>>868022
spray the outside walls with water, it will cool the house when it evaporates.

White sheets in front of the windows will reflect the light and heat from the sun but are only useful before it gets hot.

Opening windows at night is also an option depending on how hot it is at night.

The evaporative cooling can also be used to cool yourself, like said before you can just spay yourself and put a fan down. It will keep you cool.

I live in Arizona- it was 48C a week or so ago.

I always chuckle at these icebox fans. Luckily it's such a dry heat here that evaps work great- evap-cooled box fans were kind of a thing around here a decade or so ago, I remember us having a real clunky one when I was a kid.

Best option is always AC- around here we get a discount on our energy bill if we keep our usage low between 10am and 8pm, so I always stick it to ~27C during that time and just deal with the heat, then drop it down to about 25C when it's the "cheap time" of the day. Any cooler than that and I feel cold.
