If this is the wrong board to ask this, I'll either delete this thread or I'll let it die:

I was thinking of making some nice wands from legit good trees, like older, rare wood and selling them on Etsy.

I thought about posting on /ic/ but /diy/ seems a little more logical to my idea.

What does /diy/ think of this? I figured I could make different look wands, colour and stain the handles, add things like ribbon and shit. Then even on request make a pretty box for it.

And for a wiccan I thought this would be awesome to do.

I don't blame you on this but that's not what being a wiccan/pagen is about. Like any religion it's all different people in it. It happens. I've run into batshit crazy Christians tbf

make up some marketing bullshit about energies, ancient pagan groves, and that you learnt this from a craftsman in ireland who's been making these for the last 300 generations, and the New Agers will lap this shit up.

trust me, I know enough of those crusty fuckers.

>> No.836442

Fair enough. What exactly will these wands be used for? Will they need to be durable?

>> No.836445

>>836441
That's a good idea. I was thinking of running with some canes as well "magick canes"

it would look like a giant fucking wand

>>836442
I've seen and met other wiccans who commonly, like me, carry their tarot deck around. I normally have mine with me. It suppose to help with magic flow. That's the main intention of the wand. Is to point [basically] at something. But I guess a cane would be better as to fight? IDK Earth...magick?

I've always wanted to do something in the "supernatural" real, or hell, start up a Wiccan shop selling all kinds of things like runes, tarot decks, wands, capes, mats, etc. I would try to hand make what I could.

Crafting is in my family. So this knida thing would be fun to play around with.

As for the durability, As thick as the wood is or unless it's a soft wood, I would of course make a sticker that says "Fragile. Handle with care. Can easily break"

I was thinking when I would ship them off, I would be a smart ass, bury the wand in newpaper and put a chopstick on top and they get a note that says,"LOL JK the wand is legit in here"

Good idea but do it with quality. Use cheap silver and copper wire to wrap round the handle and the stem, buy some cheap crystals off ebay suppliers and embed in the wood, carve grooves and embed different metals in.

In the box, letter a card and give each one a little story referring to the items used in construction and name the wand with a unique name, give it a number but be clever and say something like 'This wand is 0001 in a series of 0001 - you have bought a unique item that will not be duplicated by us EVER.'

You could also genuinely pick up items that would make it historic - bits of antique silver and gold, stone arrowhead, thousands of year old swap kauri from new zealand etc, small fossils, any shit that makes it more unique.

Hand carved makes it much more unique as well - by all means use a lathe then add some hand tooling with a chisel or knife.

Also a good idea but once again, embellish it. Try and find rarer animals once you have practiced on ordinary stuff - maybe pick up crappy taxidermy stuff from second hand shops.

Maybe see if there is old whalebone you can find, old tortoisehell spectacles and combs. Hell you might even be able to get human bone somewhere for the ultimate Voldemort wand - that would sell for a pretty penny to a goth!

In fact, start haunting weekend flea markets, antique shops, secondhand shops, craigslist, gumtree etc. Pretty much anything unusual that can form the basis of 'provenance' for the wand.

Remember, do it with quality and style. Put it in a good box that can be used for display. The ones below (if plain) would be the type of thing but stick a bit of extra wood at the back to tilt the box forward to make a display case.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Retro-Zaka-Style-Eiffel-Tower-Wood-Wooden-Pen-Pencil-Jewelry-Box-Case-Storage-/121467759285?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&var=&hash=item1c480aeab5

You could probably find someone local to make exactly what you want then put the wand on a base of black velvet or purple 'silk' or whatever in the box.

Lol yeah, that is EXACTLY the image I had in mind.

Like the title too 'The Wandmaker'

You could REALLY capitalise with the right look and accent at so many mystic fairs, etc.

Oooh, oooh! another thought - build vials of human blood etc into the wands. You can get tiny vials on ebay for peanuts. Blood, you can supply if you know a nurse and explain yourself, a few cc would go a long way.

>> No.836765

>>836756
Hmmm, possibly but I'd start small - a staff is so much larger and takes more material and isn't QUITE as 'mystical'

Also more difficult to display.

Remember as well that rarity is a commodity. When selling a wand, a background story goes a long way:

'Due to difficult circumstances, I am having to part with a unique wand - made from the finest wood from a liitle known grove of willow near Stonehenge, this wand also has focusing amethyst crystals from a private supplier in africa, along with conduction channels of silver from the athena mine in Columbia' Anointed with human blood, this is a most powerful wand.

This is the only surviving wand of it's type in the world and one that any serious collector desires in his/her collection.

Or whatever crap is true but doesn't tell the whole truth.

The essence is to stick to the truth and just embellish it.

E.g. 'This wand uses willow as a core. Willow has long been known for it's healing powers and was used greatly valued by the ancients'

Willow bark contains salicylic acid - aspirin. The bark has been used for thousands of years to make an analgesic drink.

Stick to a truth and you can't be prosecuted.

Oak, ash, thorn ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_sacred_trees ), poplar, yew, willow, birch, boxwood. All would be decent choices. But if it were me making them? I'd use basswood or ironwood due to their toughness. They're stringy and fibrous, more difficult to snap.

The fabrics in the box should come from secondhand/antique shops. No new materials. Repurpose old salvaged wood from demolition sites, etc. Keep track of what comes from where, so you can add little provenance notes.

As for the wands, look for fruitwoods. Citrus wood is very dense, it would be a good choice. It's also slow growing, so that would help with the rarity criteria. It also helps if you harvest/gather the wood yourself at high noon or in the dark of the moon or whatever. Incantations and prayers as appropriate.

Antique silver coins would be a good addition as a pommel cap.
