Hi /diy/ers, so I heard that shipping containers can be had for as low as 400$ and that they are rigid and tough.

My idea is to use one as an underground bunker. I would just dig a hole and put it in. Most of the work is already done anyway. I do have questions. What would be the best way to dispose of wastes if I had to be in for a prolonged period of time. What about oxygen? Will a simple breather tube help? Also I plan on sleeping submerged in a water tank when I sleep in it. Whats the best off the shelf mask snorkel system for doing so. Or is it just better to make one myself and save$?? It has to cover the entire face.

1) use google next time, it even says so in the sticky
2) it's a terrible idea and you're begging for cave-ins, these things are designed to bear weight on the corners, not everywhere else
3) check the catalog, there's already a thread on this subject

here we go again, this idea has been posted by many before you and it does not work.
please check the archive for those thread and alternatives

A shipping container can be compared to a coke can when the pressure is from above and on the corners everything Is fine. When there is dirt on all sides its crunches together.

there are better/cheaper options available

I beg to differ, shipping containers can be made to very safe. I would start by welding in steal beams for structural support.

This is a wide spread internet hoax in order to get someone to spend 30k+ on a purpose built bunker system. When in reality they accomplish the same thing.

It costs more to ship them back to the ports in most cases

NO.

These are only meant to stack, where their frames take all the weight. They are not meant to have pressure on their walls or top from soil. It will cave the sides in.

The best way to actually use these in this manner is to brace them like crazy inside then pour cement over them as a structural shell then remove the bracing after the cement is cured properly.
