Its that time again /diy/

Dumpster diving and also curb-side cleanup finds.

Tell us about your most recent finds,

What's the best and worst things you've found over your whole time diving?

And lastly - what are you doing with the things you collect?

----

I've been collecting a bunch of wooden pallets, I'm going to build a compost bin for the back yard with them.

Tonight is garbage night, so I look forward to walking around my neighborhood to see what we've got.

Last week I found a decent sized cork board and would've taken it had I not already have two in my room. And a long while ago, I found a battered book self that was similar to a couple I owned, and I snagged a couple shelves to create more space.

I'm just gonna poke around tonight, but I'm currently looking for coke bottle tops to redeem those iCoke points (much to my dismay, this neighborhood is a bunch of pussy pepsi drinkers). I'm still trying to build up the nerve to hit up a local Staples, which I've heard so many good things about in the last thread.

Stores throw away things that can be easily fixed. What if you went into a store, damaged something EVER so slightly that they decide to throw it away? Hm. I got one from last year.

So my buddy and I were walking around the apartment complex, and it was towards the end of the month so there was a bunch of shit near the dumpster. But this particular month, we had an awesome find. There was a giant television and it was waaaay to heavy to carry back to his apartment. We were taking a risk, it might have not even worked, but we were destined to find out. This thing was awesome. So we got his long board, propped that motherfucker on there and rolled it all the way back. Worked like a charm. Plugged his PS2 in and played seemingly all night.

Next day we found a bunch of wood and worked in the 98 degree heat for 4 hours to build a ramp. The ramp eventually cracked in half when we got too crazy.

Next day walked over that way again and found two adorable, 5 week kitties. I guess their mom abandoned them. He got the black one and I got the white one. Still have Charlie, but he had to give his away because he couldn't take care of it.

And it goes on and on. We found so much shit at that dumpster, I really don't remember.

We found a couch that wasn't infested with bugs and maggots and we put it in an abandoned apartment then invitrd friends over and smoked some. Was pretty good.

Alright that's all.

I see nothing ethically wrong with stealing from corporate entities. I don't recall having a say in their existence, nor their stealing from my neighborhood, nor their raping of planet. I don't think I should have to ask permission any more than they asked for my permission. The only reason you shouldn't do it is because it's illegal, and as we all know, you can't discuss illegal things here. However, there's no reason to feel bad if some unknown person you don't know (and is totally not you) damaged the packaging of something in a store, and you happened to dumpster dive it later. In other news: moralistic fucks are still trying to shove their bullshit fiscal values down others' throats. omigoodness what? Been diving since /diy opened it's doors, it was something I never thought to do before. Anyways, I've been mapping out my area on a map with a grease pen, just checking off areas I've been, and leaving myself notes on places I should check on the regular, industrial places, state buildings etc.

I'm a tinkerer, so anything I find, I can either fix, or use to fix other shit. I've been slowly expanding my grid for the passed couple weeks, found some killer shit. Monitors, computers, Brass bar stock, sheet brass. Any type electronics that looks too broken to be salvageable gets the power cord/any other cords/knobs knicked off of it. Rope, always take rope. You never know when you need rope. I usually use my pickup truck, I'll drive to a place, park it, dive on foot, pull shit out, leave it beside the dumpster, then harvest it with my truck. I take it back to my shop, strip everything I want, box it, then toss the refuse in the gigantic open top dumpsters in my complex.

It's great fun, I like getting dirty. My brother started riding along with me, running lookout/helping me with light and whatnot.

It's a total blast, and completely interesting. Good 'ol late night fun.

Only downside... fucking dumpster bees and wasps. One fucked my shit up earlier tonight, I punched it to death. Cocksucker.

first dumpster dive: snagged an arcade chair thing (posted about it in last thread)

secondly, i dont think this really counts as dumpster diving, but deserves honorable mention:

thanks to /diy/ dive threads combined with watching too much american pickers/storage wars, me and my gf decided to go bargain shopping (we've been going thrifting at flea markets and whatnot for months now, decided to hit up some really random places this time)

what we discovered: random hole-in-the-wall "stores" are better than business type thrift stores (goodwill etc) and flea markets.we found some place called the Bargan Barn, it was literally a family house with a barn off to the side that they had just a MASSIVE amount of random shit laid out. we walked it for a good hour digging through things, came out with:

-a food strainer ( i think thats what it is, oddly shapped, like a cone, not a pot)
-3x hot plate skillet things (know how when u order fajitas at resturaunts they bring it out on a cast irons killet w/ a wooden "plate" bottom? yeah) 1 brand new in box, 2 that looked like they were used once
- a bathroom set (lotion despenser, generic cup, and toothrbush holder, good stainless steel, great condition, and nice and heavy, not cheap ass walmart stuff)
-furnature mover pad thingies to make it easier to move big things like dressers
-really nice heavy brass oil burner

total cost: $16.50. -easily- 60-100 bucks worth of stuff.

she just moved into a new appt and needed most of those.
I was completely ready to go into haggle mode, but when i asked how much they were, she'd look at the price tag she had on it, cut it in half, then second guess and give me another dollar or so off. shit was cash.

Professional hauler here. I am getting pretty good at convincing people that what they have is junk and then turning around and selling it for immediate profit.

Last week I got a Coast Guard approved floatation suit which I turned around and sold for forty bucks in an hour on Craigslist.

I also had an interesting find. I guess the guy that owned this house worked for Homeland Security. Found a whole box of earpieces with their silly little logos on there as well as boxes of their propaganda they hand to travelers. Makes you feel real safe when you know they just toss that stuff around. Probably will end up just throwing it away as they get so butthurt and ass sore about the least little things.

let me start off by saying that when university is wrapping up for summer, campuses are the best place to score EVERYTHING

you can get months of food, office supplies, stereo equipment in the huge dumpsters they scatter though out campus.

where i live now has organic composting, so lots of food scores now
all my clothes (boots, shoes , pants, jackets) except band t shirts, are all from dumpster.

some cool scores i have had
electric guitar ( with acoustic stings wtf)
practice amp
endless stereo equipment
some valuable records
more stuff can';t think

if you have a truck, i would recommend collecting scrap metal on heavy garbage days. it's good cash for once a month

Funny fact: i use to find endless amounts of shoes downtown where i live, and i used to have one wire i used to throw them all on.

How the fuck no one has suggested this shit yet the world may never know.

Down here in south FL I always see dudes with big ass trucks overflowing with metal scrap. By the end of the day they're probably making 100-300$ cash. Thats a pretty decent fucking salary when combined with free food, and other awesome shit.

From working in a scrapyard in the UK for several years:

For light iron [i.e shit made of metal that isnt pure steel/iron...lawn mowers, old bikes etc.] we charged £50 a ton.

To make more out of it, you get weighed in with all your shit and then tear it apart. We paid £5 for small motors and £10 for car batteries. Power cables for electric appliances got copper prices [which is a lot more than £50 a ton...iirc it was ~£1500 a ton] and even though power cables dont weigh much its still an extra £5-10 or so for a decent length of stripped cable. Catalytic converters went for £15.

Of course, this is if you take it apart yourself. Otherwise we wait for you to leave, pay you £50 a ton and then harvest all the shit and profit. Also, when people scrap whole cars they often sit outside soaking the car seats in water/filling the boot with bricks or w/e to bump up the weight so instead of having 2 ton of car, its now 2.5-3 or w/e...can be profitable, but get caught doing it and we wont buy it and will tell any nearby scrapyards that you are a dodgy little gypsie...also more prone to calling the police and checking out the legitimacy of the car [i.e if its stolen].

Also, a car without a crash mark or w/e on it will get raised eyebrows if you try and scrap it. Expect many questions [at least if the scrapyard is half honest.

Scrap guys usually don't have any bills, here in Florida. It's mostly geriatric black dudes and their friends trying to buy beer for the day. It's a decent way to make your daily eatin' money, but not much else. I don't do it because I don't wanna take food off their tables, most of them are super sweet older dudes with awesome stories.

The Pro-hauling business is what I'd like to dip a finger into, there's a lot of people who run one/two man operations hauling away people's junk in those big fuckin' junk trucks, FOR PROFIT + THE ITEMS. you got to know what to look for too.

god tier:clean copper (uninsulated wires, electric motors), copper alloys (brass, bronze), cat converters, precious metals.
good tier:heavy aluminum, lead, dirty copper.
meh tier: light aluminum (cans), red iron, steel

look out for:
washers and dryers because of the copper in the electric motors, dirty copper in the wires, etc
hot water heaters b/c of the brass fittings and the steel
>AC units these contain a lot of copper and aluminum and can be worth upwards of 50$ depending on the size.
Refrigerators are usually nasty an smell like shit, but can be worth a bit because of the copper piping, just look out for the ones that have plastic piping, those are worthless
old aluminum ladders
automotive parts
old lawnmowers/pressure washers can usually be sold on craigslist as is for 20-100$ depending on the brand and quality

I usually look for move-outs. Or... clean outs. You find where a renter died with no next of kin, or got sent to prison.. The landlord sometimes just puts everything out on the lawn for pickup. I have gotten... full sets of cookware, frypans etc. garbage bags full of towels (beach and such), stacks of porn tapes, cardboard boxes full of old porn magazines. Basicly, anything the landlord didn't think they could recoup their money owed from they stick out on the lawn when they die.

(They usually grab stuff like electronics, tv, washers, etc...) some people are idiots though so books and such get tossed... or anything they think is morally bad... found zippo lighter collection once... guy cleaning gave it to me because he didn't believe in smoking (lol) pre wwII flip tab style... still have a couple, sold one to one of those travelling collectable buyers places that set up in hotels for 300 bucks, and decided to hang onto the rest for awhile...

This sorta stems from a Supreme Court case. The police had taken a suspects trash, and the suspect tried to get the rap thrown out because it was illegal search and seizure. The Supreme Court ruled that once someone puts trash onto a public right of way (like a street a/or easement), it's considered "abandoned" and fair game.

HOWEVER, the ruling does not cover trash receptacles on private property (like Dumpsters) and local municipalities can pass regulations and laws where going into trash cans is illegal.

WORST THING:
I found an abandoned baby in a dumpster. I was interviewed by the local news too. I think the kid suffered some injuries from being there for a couple of hours.

BEST:
perfect condition del monte fruit cans that would expire in 4 weeks. Everything else I found so far didn't seem too shocking.

Recent find was a stack of old playboys. I just created an ebay listing for the issues that weren't damaged by the rain.

I don't keep the things I find. I usually think of ways to improve the value and sell it.

Generally I just avoid locked dumpsters. I can pick locks, but considering the likely hood of getting harassed by the police when diving unlocked dumpsters, diving a locked one is just asking for trouble.

I ran into a dumpster that was unlocked. Couldve taken the chain and lock with me. The only thing I walked away with was a few bags of beer bottles. Brought them in and ended up with a little under ten bucks.

Also, the rest of my haul from last night is as follows

From a goldmine of a dumpster
>an air filter
>glass jar
>travel bag
>plastic storage container

From a box in an alley
>tupperware
>a dress

Next to someone's garbage can(s)
>microwave
>two nicely fixed up chairs (only took one)

In front of someone's garage
>an old car cassette player

This was my first run, and honestly should have gone back to that dumpster I first mentioned. I got kind of spooked after a while after making more noise than I thought was exceptable. I stripped the motors, copper wires, and metals from the electronics so they wouldn't be so cumbersome.

I was surprised that this stuff was in such good condition. Will most likely do this again.

I have to say, Barry's behavior on the show is sickening to some degree. The guy has oddles of cash to throw around, yet doesn't even make a half-hearted attempt to try and minimize his loses. I've seen at best him making two attempts to try and wring out as much profit from the lockers he buys (One was because Dave Hester Jr. asked him to to see if he waas willing to consign items Barry didn't want, and another because he had buyers remorse). He's in it for the ultimate payday, at the costs of some storage unit worker having to cleanup his shit that he leaves behind. He almost reminds me of old people who have money problems. Only in this case, he wastes the money on buying storage lockers instead of being conned by someone else.

What's even more sickening is that people love him and will defend him on A&E's message boards from any sort of negativity. Blind faith I guess.

And the most interesting part is that Barry's ways aren't unique. I can't begin to tell you how many items are left behind by bidders, only interested in the good stuff.

Digging through your toxic waste
We find the crumbs to suit our taste

From the dumpster to the fucking grave

From the cradle to the end
The pigeons are our closest friends
We'll forage always after dark
Then chill with squirrels down in the park

From the dumpster to the stench
Fine dining on a city bench
With gourmet finds it must be true
That america is paved with food

And in the gutter where we lay
No health care, not a dollars pay
We'll take our food from garbage cans
While they're starving in a foreign land
Starving in a foreign land
Starving in a foreign land
Starving in a foreign land

So from the dumpster, to the grave
We'll never shower, sometimes shave
We never fucking wash our clothes
All stinking drunk at punk rock shows

I too work at a grocery store. Our generators run on gasoline. So in case of a power failure the generators are their to provide electricity for our freezers and coolers. The power would have to be out for days and even if such a thing happened, they would just put more gasoline in the generators to keep them running. The only way we would throw our stuff away is if we were unable to get more gasoline.

I have a question.

How legal IS dumpster diving? One must worry about security and police, but what can they charge you with? You're recycling unwanted items (that is, they have given it up as property) that would just sit in a landfill, if you're quite and cleaning up after yourself you're not being disruptive, what's the problem?

Is it just trespassing? Would the cops/security like some of your loot if they find you (coughbribecough)? Or are they just stuck up and think you're scum for taking things out of the trash?

The legality really depends on the jurisdiction. For example, where I live, you need a waste disposal permit to collect garbage from anywhere. This means taking an item from curb-side or a loading bay or whatever is actually illegal unless you are registered to collect. Its also illegal to remove items from containers provided by registered collectors to a business or private customer. These regulations are really in place to protect public safety, but they mean dumpster diving is technically illegal. There's also the obvious trespassing and occasionally breaking and entering comes up if there happens to be a hole in the fence or whatever.

The closest I ever came to genuinely dumpster diving was when I was 16 or so and my parents hauled over a dumpster to get rid of shit from our house- they threw out a lawnmower, a set of encyclopedias, and old TV- shit, I was pretty pissed at them just for that. But my mom tossed a typewriter that I thought was cool, though it wasn't really an antique or anything.
Anyway, once night came I needed one of the encyclopedias for my homework (go figure) so I hopped in the dumpster in my jammies and bare feet, dodged around mower blade and glass and snatched the encyclopedia and the typewriter. She found it and tossed it a couple days later.

I also went to some family party, you know, the kind of people you're not sure how they're related to you or what most of their names are, mostly older people, but one of them had found some newspapers from the 20s and a LIFE magazine from '56 in a garbage bin on the way over. I got some even heavier shit. I used to manage a warehouse for a so called non profit charity. We had something like fifty storage units filled with shit. And I mean fucking filled.

The last manager couldn't take it and ended up quitting. When I took over there was a fucking new sheriff in town. Turns out the reason was that why it all piled up was the ridiculous amount of paperwork needed to give the shit away to the needy. So many fuck stick Catholic bureaucrats covering their ass that shit never got done. One of the main job duties I had was reducing the amount of storage even though we were accepting truckloads of donations every day.

I ended up just not doing the paperwork and giving the shit away. I figured out which needy people could keep their mouth shut and hooked them up. This was an organization that did refugee resetlement and a lot of other cultures don't blab everything like Americans.

Not just that but I got my own storage lockers and took some mid grade stuff that was buried and stashed it and sold it after a couple of months. They started to get suspicious and started to arrange for really, really expensive shit to get 'donated'. I made sure I 'donated' it to some kid that had stepped on a land mine or someone who was really in need.

There wasn't much they could do as the political out cry would have been too much and the bureaucrats would have started to answer some high up questions.

After a while the stress got to be too much so I got the system streamlined and gave them a month to find a replacement to manage what I had created.

They of course went out and found the biggest douce they could to replace me and the system started anew.

Laws vary by locality. And not just the laws on the books but you have to look at what is enforced. For instance without even looking I would bet that almost every municipality in California has a law against dumpster diving. But to think a cop going from a shooting, to a mugging to a high speed crash is going to go spend an hour processing someone for dumpster dive is just ridiculous.

You pretty much need to do your own research to know what goes on in your area. Some towns actually have organized clubs for this.

As for security guards I wouldn't worry too much. I used to work that shit job and know from experience that the number one thing the owner said was to never touch anyone. Companies are afraid of lawsuits big time. You really think a million dollar corporation is going to risk a lawsuit over some trash? And knowing a little bit about this sort of law you can't detain someone for trespass. Once they leave then there is no crime. I used this more than once when some out of control rent a cop tried their stop come back here bullshit. If you aren't damaging property, hurting someone or trying to start a fire there just isn't much a renta cop can do.

And like the others said don't mess with cutting locks and what not. It is illegal and gives the rest of us a bad name. Also keep the area you work neat. The only reason that laws were passed on dumpster diving was the sheer mess that some bums will leave behind.

After doing this for a few years I have quiet arrangements with a few businesses that leave stuff out so they don't have to pay the trash fees. Outa site outa mind goes a long ways in this trade.

And a trade it is. When you really score big you will know what I am talking about.

The annoying part is a lot of the shit-tier stuff we still had to collect, asbestos, household waste and loose greenery were explicitly prohibited so we could leave those, but stuff like the fuckhuge tree stump we had to try and lift into the truck. >I've seen lawnmowers thrown out in the curbside because the blade was dull

I joined a local facebook group in my area and someone offered a free lawnmover in good working order, recently had a service, but 'doesn't cut the grass as nicely'.

I went to pick it up at this guys fancy house, came with the grass catcher and half a bottle of new oil, owner said it got serviced by some Mexican he had working at his house (possibly an illegal), but he likes his grass 'razor trimmed'... he gave me a soda for the trip home.

Got it home and flipped it upside down - the lawnmowers the blade edge in the wrong direction (no wonder it was making a mess of the guys lawn). Took 5minutes to unbolt all 4 blades and put in the right direction and it cuts perfectly.

The lesson of the day?

Not so sure this one will do much mowing. There are parts missing all together. The blade disk is rusted to the shithouse. Imho the blade disk was a bad design. Pressed steel and powder coated with a kind of air fins on the edge to blow the grass. The powder coating lifts off and keeps water underneath accelerating the rust. The ignition cut off switch (if you can call it that) is a bit dodgy too. I picked it up more as spare parts one for another one I have. That said the one part I want is crook too (blade disk).

I want to ask a few questions to all you divers.

What exactly are you doing with all this collected stuff?

Are you just filling your backyard/house with horded shit?

Or are you trying to make something or trying to sell it?

I'm not trying to offend anybody, but if you collecting this shit and not doing anything with it, why take it in the first place?

I had a room mate who worked at a bakery, he'd get stacks of the end of day stuff, donuts - eclairs - loaves of bread... you name it pretty much.

It was pretty awesome to begin with (3 of us all enjoying as many donuts as we liked) - but he was just fucking going overboard bringing this shit home... who honestly needs 8 loaves of Soy & Linseed bread Every-Single-Day... He'd bring home 1 or 2 black garbage bags filled to the brim at the end of each shift and there was just no way of keeping up, he just didn't want to throw it away, but in reality it was just getting thrown away at our place... have you ever had to compact loaves of bread into a garbage bin by jumping up and down on the fucking bread?

Don't be that guy /diy/... if you have no use for it, let it go... maybe another diver will get it and actually use it...

I have been doing professional hauling for a couple of years now. Dump runs, apartment and eviction clean outs and the like.

If I don't need it, or can't sell it then off to the dump it goes. I have gotten pretty good at walking into a house and immediately knowing what is of value.

I live in a poor working class area and this helps too. Sometimes I will get a load which is almost all reusable but not worth much for resale. So I have a free pile in front of my house known to the regulars and place a lot of stuff there to save on the dump fees.

It is a hard life but also addictive. Sometimes I will be broke in the morning and have a couple hundred bucks by afternoon.

If I come across something and I have doubts about its value I go on Ebay and Craigslist. Then I price the article one half to one fourth its worth just so I can sell it in a couple hours and keep my yard tidy.

I also give a lot of stuff to my landlady for rent. This along with fixing up and maintaining her place pays my rent.

The only problem has been that she is somewhat of a packrat and it is often a chore to tell her something needs to go to the dump.

As for wasted food I also started raising earthworms in the basement and all the food I come across goes to them if it is not fit for humans. I then sell the worm tea and worms to others in farm and garden.

A couple weeks back I did a dump run for a guy that apparently worked for Homeland Security.

After doing this for a couple of years my moto has become to not throw anything away if I don't know what it is worth. I had a few finds on the run but the strangest was a fake gun. It was solid metal and apparently the type they use to slip in bags to test screeners.

I figured being government surplus it must be worth something. So my buyer rolls up today and it is a cop in a car. He was all like hell yeah ten bucks I'll take it. Those things aren't cheap. They use them in martial arts classes for recruits. That plus a few other things makes the runs worthwhile and doesn't really take any time out of my day.

I got a rare case of managment approved dumpster diving today.

End of my shift was near, and our assistant manager came in, and we took the trash from the night out to the dumpster. We were shooting the shit, laughing it up, and he points out this set of shelving by the dumpster. He'd been thinking of keeping it for himself since there was nothing wrong with them other than we didn't need it anymore, and I mentioned the fact I'd been hunting around for some cheap shelves for at home. He ends up letting me snatch it up and I drove that bitch home and set it up in my room as a DVD rack. My assistant manager is a total bro.

Some friends of mine raided a little caesers dumpster once and got 10 pizzas that had just been thrown out maybe 10 minutes before they got there. I guess at the end of the night the employees just threw out fresh pizzas that they couldn't reheat the next day.

I recently found a PS2 with over 20 games in the Gamestop dumpster. It wouldn't read discs, but It was a fucking sinch to fix.

Makes me wonder why they threw it away, anyway...

because good luck selling a PS2 when the PS3 is five years old.

To put some perspective, the PS2 was 6 years old when the PS3 came out. So the labor cost of fixing it was likely to be greater than what they could sell it for minus space occupied.

It's math like that, that makes me wonder how anyone can go along with the sick joke "not enough resources on earth for us all" we don't have a resource problem we have a management issue. Guerrilla recyclers know this better than anyone.

I got a mower once. The problem with it? They replaced the sparkplug with one that was too long so the piston hit the bottom of the plug. Put in the proper plug and it worked great!

It's sad, but some people are truly useless idiots when it comes to fixing (or even maintaining) things.

I got a lawn mower 3 years ago right before I bought my own house. One of the wheels broke off, The bag hinges were bent, and the air filter hadn't ever been changed. Changed the filter, and threw on a wheel, set it to mulch (fixed the hinges, but fuck bagging) and it hasn't let me down once. I let it sit for 6-8 weeks at a time, and don't touch it over the winter, and it always starts up with the oil topped off, and fresh gas.

Yup, it's one of many reasons I hate capitalism. When everyone works to their own advantage with disregard of others, they end up fucking *themselves* over. Well, here's to the demise of consumer culture.

From the dumpster, to the grave!

So on my second day of dumpster-diving, I found box loads of computers.

The only problem? I have 0 knowledge of hardware.

I could imagine they could be sold for a decent price, but all of them were partially disassembled.

So, I can't describe the components to potential buyers, and I don't even know how to set them up to test if they work. And I assume nobody wants to buy a non-fixed computer except for scrap or their own projects.

Thoughts? I'm really at a loss on how to pull a profit from something that seems like it would easily net a few grand from someone more savvy.

They're pretty much worthless. If its anything older than 5 years old, $50 is the most it will pull in perfect working order, and at 10 years, good luck trying to trick someone int giving you $20.

Corporate computers have a 4 year lifespan. People that know about computers don't want them because they're dated and underpowered, and people who know fuckall about computers don't want them because they don't come with a warranty.

You're in the zone of pain. Best find something to do with them yourself.

A while ago I was dumpster diving and I as I pulled a box off the top of the pile I saw a tiny foot connected to a leg, I went into complete freak out mode for about 5 seconds until I discovered it was a doll.

... Thought I had found a dumpster baby.

Short of turning them into E-waste recyclers: Scrapping them yourself.

Dismantle computers into several key components: Metals, Plastics, and Circuit Boards.

Most computers nowadays are made of ABS/PP plastics, and have little to no recycle value. If you can't find a way to recycle it or sell it, trash it.

Metals are split into several distinct groups: Steel, Copper, Gold, and Lead. Steel will comprise frames; copper is wires and dynamos. Gold is either etched onto the circuit boards a/or in the chips. Lead is solder that binds resistors and whatnot onto the circuit boards.

Steel and copper can net you fast cash. Check your local scrap yards on their buying policies. General rule is that stripping copper wires of plastics will net you better prices at yards; either invest in a wire stripper a/or burn them and clean them up with a cloth.

Circuit Boards is another matter. You could undertake the process yourself, or sell them as scrap on eBay. Google "Computer Gold recovery" for an idea.

I once went dumpster diving.

What I found was kind of macabre in hind-sight.

They where some heavily damaged but still functioning floppy disks unique to Windows 98. Once I put them inside my desktop, it was a bunch of gore and weird .txt files with a ton of addresses.

One time me and a mate found a bunch of old party lights and an old Super 8 Camera, but found out that super8 processing was in one lab in the world which was shutting down. Still cool though.

And the other night I found a pretty sweet road bike next to a dumpster, was sitting there for two nights in a row around 3am so I figured it was all good, nice condition just needs some paint and a new seat.

I live in a pretty small town so there are slim pickings, but thankfully I think I'm the only regular diver around these parts so loads of dumpsters are left open.

I'm in NZ btw. Will post pic of bike later on.

here in Norway, electronicstores are obligated to take in old electronics. So people leave all their old electronics behind the stores. So once a week i take a drive to the biggest electronicstores. And you wont believe what people are leaving there. For now I've found 3 32" lcd/palsma tvs. And every time i raid all the computers standing there. Always take a screwdriver with me. I take out all the ram, hdd, and any other parts worth anything, sometimes i find high-end graphic cards, and more often i start to find BD-drives. And any good mainboards or cases i find, i take with me. Normaly i can make 2 worthwhile pc's a week. So i sell them online, so thats almost 400dollars extra each week. I just hope this lasts a bit longer, before anyone else finds out about this.

Every once and a while, I drive to dive over to Boca Raton, an extremely wealthy neighborhood here in Miami.

I have landed some godly finds every time I've gone over there. The best was a minty 2008-era Macbook Pro with a broken LCD. $30 fix, free $1000+ computer. The specs are really nice on it, too. 4GB ram, quad-core processor, the works. Battery was practically new.

I also found a Herman Miller chair with a small tear in the leather but otherwise like new, a large crystal-cut chandelier that looks very well-made and expensive, an old, working Honda Rebel motorbike, couple of nice Waterford champagne glasses, a working Royal typewriter that just needed new ribbon, tons of old computers, a rosewood china cabinet, and a few other odds and ends.

The legend about nice finds in rich neighborhoods is logically true. Boca Raton is awesome.
