So I've been thinking about living in a RV but I would rather prefer something military grade on fuck-huge wheels, not a flimsy trailer. Something like Paramount Marauder but available to public.Any one knows about a vehicle that would be suitable?

Also, DIY moblie fortress general.

Better have the dosh for it though.

This.

Every once in a while there are threads on /k/ about buying APCs (amored personnel carriers) and the like. Cheap ones start at $50k ish IIRC, but those probably happen to stand in a garage in Warsaw so you better be in bed with some guy at FedEx.
(Maybe with the whole Ukraine thing happening now, there are cheaper ones but also maybe with holes and/or riskier to get to your place)
Anyway yeah most of the surplus stuff is in various states of disrepair, i.e. you may need new engine, new transmission, etc. Also expect non-publicly-availiable stuff like speshul radios etc to be stripped out rather unloving.

Also that price range is more a jeep-sized vehicle, something you want to live in is probably bigger, BMP-class thingy I seem to remember was ~$70k.

Also, "military grade" vehicles drink gas like crazy, expect one-digit MPGs. Because lol, the taxpayer pays the gas bill.

>> No.765376

build your own. No laws saying you cant weld armor plates on etc. You would need a heavy duty trailer. Might need to build from the ground up, camper stores can save a lot of time. A actual motor home might be a bit harder because of weight constraints. A heavy duty truck with modifications might be an order. If you live near virginia, they sell old military transports all the time on government auction. Cheap too and less than 40k miles.

>> No.765410

In the early 1990s, custom car builder Rick Dobbertin of Cazenovia, N.Y. converted a stainless steel milk tanker into the go-anywhere Surface Orbiter. Dobbertin and his wife traveled to 28 countries in their amphibious motorhome, logging 33,000 miles on land and 3,000 in the open ocean. Shortly after displaying the Surface Orbiter at Charlotte Motor Speedways Food Lion AutoFair in 1995, he sold the craft and began brainstorming a more advanced form of land-sea transportation.

Construction of the new HydroCar began in 2002 and took more than 20,000 man-hours to complete. Dobbertin engineered and built every part of the unique vehicle from raw materials, including its tube-frame chassis, marine-spec aluminum hull, aviation-grade electrical system and Stealth fighter-like canopy.

Rick touts his HydroCar as being the first amphibious vehicle with a fully articulated body, which means the conversion from car to boat takes place automatically through the movement of major components

Sorry I can't be much help to you as I'm in the UK (Northern Ireland), not US and don't know your law etc. However for our UK fans:

In the UK, you need a car drivers license, you automatically get the correct provisional category (Cat H) for tracked vehicles, which means with a full Cat H holder in the vehicle, you can drive on the road. (BTW to get full Cat H license, you can do the test in a mini digger!)

Surplus tracked and wheeled IFV's, AFV's, TD and tanks are much more common than you think. An FV432 can cost as little as £5k, MOT exempt, tax exempt, insurance cheaper than most cars. Centurions have been made road legal!

To drive on road you just need to fit proper lights, mirrors, internal instruments, Track guards/side skirts, the number plate, rubber track pads and ideally have a "commander".

As for wheeled variants, the license differs based on weight, axles and wheelbase, a C or E license may do it.

Still, check this shit out:

The BLM likes to buy these to turn them into T4 engines (big fire trucks). They're awesome because they can go into the rough and part of the setup is a nozzle on either side of the front bumper that the driver can control.

I got laid out once from the jet on one of them. Fire crossed the line through roots where I was walking. No one could see or hear me yelling for aid on my crew. I couldn't get the ground to open up because it was nothing more than rocks. During my freak out, a tetra showed up and was calling for me to move. Didn't hear, got hosed.

It was awesome. Also saw one with a flat. Don't ever get a flat.

Brother in arms!
My plan is to use a standard box truck and then build it up keeping the outside as unchanged as I can.
A real life Millennium Falcon (which is the star wars equivalence of a box truck...heavily modified boxtruck)
More space in a medium sized moving truck than a tiny house.
I want a mobile fortress that has a hanger bay with smaller vehicle (runabout) so something with a lift gate a rolling back door. The deck clearance alone is a major security and safety feature.
Reenforcing the roof into functional deck space doubles available space and lets you hang out 13+ feet in the air (hard to prowl a yard like that).

I fitted an International Loadstar school bus out as a shop bus. Never again. Much less usable room than apparent. If you are not a manlet, the height is annoying too.

You can register them as RVs if you rip most of the pax seats out, so I did. They suck to load and unload.

It's easy to roll a bus, truck or MRAP by the way, which is why MRAP training units have rollover trainers.

Short version, military trucks are affordable to buy but suck to use, which is why they mostly sell to niche markets who need what they do. Buses can be used but are fuel hogs and you had better be a mechanic because if they break down you can end up with an expensive wrecker bill on top of repairs. I'm a mechanic with skillz and gear, but reject school buses. You don't want to pay for bus tires as they ain't cheep.

Converting a box truck into a camper and forgetting about stoopid pseudo-road warrior bullshit is your most practical move if you actually want to build a useful vehicle.

Even nicer if you get one with a liftgate for loading and unloading things such as a motorcycle. (Liftgates are simple and abundant in salvage yards. I have one on my F150 and love it.)

A box truck with a good drivetrain is how I'd go but that's NOT an off-road or even nasty road excursion vehicle. If you want that, shit money. A bobbed military truck with a large trailer would be best for that.

best hope one of those seat belted buses doesn't get stuck/stalled across a railroad track with a train coming... the case against seat belts in buses of this type were for fast evacuation in just such a case. especially with young kids (5, 6 years old). they tend to not be so quick with doing and undoing belts. add a freight train barreling down on them and fatalities are guaranteed.
more then a decade ago a bus did get trapped across a track in traffic and a train did hit it and kids did die. problem was they saw the train coming but didn't IMMEDIATELY pop the emergency door and bail out. they thought the bus was going to move off the track before impact... but it didn't.
