Heyo. I went to the junkyard today and came back with six full range speakers, three tweeters, and two amps. Everything's Bose and H/K, so that's good shit (at least the H/K), and I also have four other decent car speakers laying around. What do with all this shit? The obvious answer is make a couple towers, but I have like 3 or 4 of those already. I kinda wanna make a cube with speakers on each side and just have that for shits and giggles. Any ideas, /diy/?

Back to the dump.

So, no woofers, no mids? Well, the tweeters are kind of useless then. You can do something with the full ranges though. 6 of them is enough for a cube, sure. Hang it from the ceiling like a disco ball. Thats worth at least 1 shit and a couple of giggles.

The full ranges will handle the mids fine, and some nigger took out just the sub from the Infiniti I got these from. The bass response on the larger cones is pretty decent anyway. Why should the tweeters be useless without a woofer?

dude, can you flip those over - or post markings other side? cheers.

Bose car systems tend to be trash, both to work with and listen to. They are usually some non-standard impedance that makes them hard to drive without the factory amp, and respectively the factory amp can't drive shit but the bose speakers. H/K not so bad.

You want something really good start looking for nakamichi stuff out of old Lexus cars.

The tweeters are 4W, 4 ohm, the ovals are 21W 3 ohm, and the rounds don't say shit, but I'd guess 20ishW, 4 ohm. Still trying to find info on the amps, though.

H/K is life. And who gives a shit about impedance? As long as I don't fry my amp, I don't give a shit how many ohms it is.

I guess, but either your amp won't be happy or you won't get near as much power out of them as you'd want. I tried hooking up a GM/Suzuki head to an 8 ohm speaker and barely got any volume out of it with the head unit cranked. Even at 20 watts/channel it should have been way louder than it was.

If you don't isolate the signals with a crossover than all the drivers will try to play all the different frequencies at the same time. Small drivers (tweeters) are great for high frequencies, poor for mid ranges and shit for low frequencies. Same deal for larger drivers (woofers) but reversed. Mid range drivers (squawkers) are good for mid range frequencies (derp) but poor at everything else. Full range drivers are a jack of all trades, master of none and even then that aren't that great at highs and lows. Better than a standard squawker but still not as good as a dedicated woofer or tweeter.

So, to your question, why should the tweeters be useless without a woofer? Because if you don't have a crossover you will be sending the high frequencies to the mids and they will try to produce them and they will sound meh. Think of two people playing a trumpet to the exact same tune, but one trumpet is all fucked up. Its gonna sound meh not matter how good the good trumpet is. Same deal but worse, because you have no woofer at all. It would also be like listening to a 5.1 system with the subwoofer disconnected on top of your muddy high frequencies.

So either you need to makeget yourself a crossover and at the very least some woofers so you can have a 2-way system or just stick with the 'full range' drivers and live with it.

Eh, I'd just get a bigger amp.

The tweeters have a built in crossover, broseph. Audio electronics is also my major (kind of), so, uh, sorry for the wasted keystrokes?

..ah, ok CAR bose.. sorry, had a brainfart theres, but they look(ed) kind of like the old 800 drivers.. was prepared to pay someone good cash for these, but, cheers for the info, appreciated.

- bit unfair, trashing the things, sans tryout - Bose gets trashed for everything now, but, the good Dr. made some good pro shit, back in the days - 901s, (still made, after 35 years) and a 302 sub, its not shit, dude.

Admittedly, their rep was fkd when they ingeniously convinced the world to splash out on matchboxes with paper drivers - they more or less owned the 'satellite speaker' market - and I dunno much about their car stuff - but still, not *everything* Bose is diss-worthy.

Yeah, some older bose stuff is great.
However, the car stuff tends to be nothing but a pain in the ass. Either the drivers or amp tend to crap out sometime after you've bought it, they're crazy expensive to replace, and hardly provide an improvement over the 'standard' systems. What's worst is most of the time, the entire audio system needs rewired if you want to put in a standard audio system.

Yeah but rewiring shit is fun.
