No new thread? Tsk!

Anyway, the price has finally been announced for the 991. Hope you have $1600.

Noob here, just got my call sign a couple of weeks ago.

Is an ARRL membership worth the money?

One question. Why?

Why is it $1600?

Damn thats sexy.

My gramps has been trying to get me into amateur radio for over a decade, and now that im an adult I feel as if I should, Its not like memorizing 300 questions to pass the test is hard (you don't even need to know morse anymore? WTF kind of shit is that?)

Anyways, monitoring, maybe one of you schmucks can convince me to go do it.

Maybe just for the monthly addition of QST. I've been a member for 4 years now, that's the only part of it that does anything for me.

It's a really fun hobby if you're interested in electronics/technology, and like talking to people.

>tfw made a radio just like that but with an arduino for about $100 worth of parts

feels gud

post it!

I'd love to see what you used, what it looks like, frequencies, range, etc.

Yeah, but i was hoping for an MSRP more like $1200. I can't do 16. :(

Oh man, to this day you'll STILL hear a lot of the old farts complaining on the air (and on ham radio web sites, if they can find them) about how nobody who got a license after X date deserves it because the tests aren't insanely difficult any more.

Anyway, definitely no morse requirement any more. Just three license levels: Tech (easy as hell), General (a bit tougher, but not much) and Extra (still kind of a bitch compared to the other two, but certainly nothing like what it was in, say, 1980).

The ARRL study guides are all good, but i combined them with a subscription to the online study site Ham Test Online (http://hamradiolicenseexam.com), which helped immensely. (Only started studying for the Extra last week though, definitely not ready yet.)

Look up JT65 and JT9. Digital modes are funnnnn. And you don't have to listen to anyone try to have a conversation with you about their colonoscopy.

don't have any pics because I'm at work but the ARRL sells a how-to book to do it

honestly it's not that hard if you already know how to use an arduino

Haven't seen the project. Can you post when you get a chance? Its not SDR is it?

Don't be retarded, we know that's not possible. If it is, post proof. I intend to build an HF rig using a dds and some basic design considerations but I know it won't even come close to a commercially built system.

Ha nice, I just had a old uniden mc6700 on the tug. Mine was black though

Had to sell the tug because the enine was a bit to thirsty (16,5L MWM 6 cyl w/ 174 hp)

>> No.729607

>>729399
Hah wow I can imagine that was a thirsty one alright! Nothing like that hum though. My other one's a 32footer with a big ol 180hp bus engine in it, but likewise I can't afford to take her out since they started taxing boat diesel here. Fucking fun to tinker with though

This is said boat. Was always a bitch to start it because the starter ring gear was worn out and this would mean that the starter wouldnt often engage proper in to the gear.
it would be quite a bitch to replace it (have to move the 2 tonne engine) so that wasnt happening.
Got it to start by pulling out the pinion and push it in the ring gear. Then hold it in place by putting the lip of a beverage can between the gear and the starter itself. This way it would be already engaged in the proper way. and the lip would be just flung away.

Nowadays I just have a small tug with a old fordson tractor engine of 70hp. Use a illegal (because no atis) uv-5r on it for VHF.
