What you need to look for is a single phase to 3 phase converter.

Yes they exist, but you'll need 220+ volts to run it. And then there's the cost.

You're better off selling it and getting a new power supply.

up to 1400W nominal power: 230 V ±10% 47 Hz to 53 Hz
for 2800W and 4200W: 400 V ±10% 47 Hz to 53 Hz, two-phase
for 7000W and higher 400 V ±10% 47 Hz to 53 Hz, three-phase
i guess if its rated 230v at single phase then perhaps someone just stuck a 3phase ceeform on it because thats all they had?

yeah i don't think the list is to tell you if you wire it up this way you get this power, its saying if your unit can supply this much power (they have many different designs) it needs to be connected like this.

anyway as the plate you posted says 230v and a big red 3phase plug is usually around the 400v per phase mark, consider that the voltage between two 415v phases is 230v.
assuming you love somewhere with 230v supplies and

ASSUMING YOU LOOK INSIDE HOW ITS WIRED TO CONFIRM FIRST

i would remove the plug (should be easy to do non-destructively) and see if it is wired between two phase pins, and if so you can probably just whap a normal plug on it and away you go (bear in mind the current rating is 16A, i don't know where you live i don't know the ratings so be careful, if you get it to turn on at least then you can wire up a 16a blue ceeform socket or something to your main house electrical panel for actual use)

but you need to see where the wires in the plug goes first.

after reading thread I'm with
>>686811

after looking how the plug is wired, I agree that it needs two phases.

the internal wiring is next, how the transformers are wired will determine which way you go.

it may be simple or not, but it should be do-able.

>> No.686942

>>686825
The best thing to do is work out how the transformers are actually wired. If they are phase to phase you may have to see if there are suitable voltage taps and/or primary winding configurations to convert it to single phase. If they are phase to neutral *only* you should be good to just bridge the two actives. You will need a suitably rated power point to run it. This may or may not be a thing in your country. We have 240v 20amp single phase plugs here but they are rare.

if OP visits Fug's website, he can see that power supplies below 5000W tend to be double-phase, but 7000W or more tend to be 3-phase: http://www.fug-elektronik.de/webdir/2/download_e.htm

the higher wattage power supplies prob need 3-phase so they dont overwhelm the line, and blow a fuse. but, ultimately, no matter how many phases are used, you end up with a DC voltage, so it's likely possible to do some minor rewiring to get it to work in a home. Maybe OP can ask for a schematic. When I needed a schematic for my power supply, I emailed the company and they sent it immediately.

>> No.687272

>>687239
Op here,
So I've already contacted Fug and asked for a circuit diagram but they haven't responded yet.
I've also contacted the seller and , behold, he told me he already had the same symptoms but thought it way because he didn't know how to use it...
Maybe he lied maybe he didn't...

So obviously this has a problem somewhere and it make the whole thing even more fun to me.

I've tried powering the other phase alone and the two phases with the same wiring and nothing different happened (I was quite suspecting something could blow up with both phases wired together but I guess I'm lucky).
I cannot tell without the schematics but there seems to be a nice little trick with that loud relay I'm hearing at startup : when only one phase is powered it splits power to both transformers from one single cable.
I've started probing everywhere with my multimeter. There are test points on the controller board and every voltage seems okay. I read +14.8 volts on the 15 volt rail and about -14.2 at the negative 15 volt rail. I guess those 0.8 volts aren't the problem so I'm going to systematically probe EVERYTHING from mains to output terminals.
Maybe my scope could help here too.
There are some electrolytic caps that could have dried up thus making the power ripple.

I'll keep you guys updated, this started quite frustrating but it's gently starting to get quite enjoyable.

AHHHAAA finally :

Sehr geehrter Herr Dudler

Which googlel translates to :

Dear Mr. Dudler

As a result, the schema to your NTN 1 950M-65 in the Appendix.
Otherwise, you can send us for repair.
However, we would have to thoroughly clarify whether it is worthwhile even in this old power supply.

Best regards

There's a fair amount of ICs on the boards. If one of them is fried It'll be hard to find a replacement.
I deeply hope it's just a failed filtering cap somewhere or some other easy to repair thing.

Here are the circuit diagrams for anyone interested. All in glorious nazi speak because why not, Fug.
I'll be working on this full time later this night.

Niggers, I understand now :
The voltage difference only BETWEEN the two phases is 380 volts but 220v phase to neutral. That's why nothing happened when I plugged the two phase terminals together.
0v is fed to the huge transformer so nothing can light up and no power is coming from the output.
This means everything working on 220v inside does work independently from the rest but I can only get power with 2 phases....
Ghhhhhh.... w...wait .... I'm sure I have something akin to 380 volts in the laundry.
Will examine schematics more and post results.

Nope. But ....

Guys... GUYS !!!!
I thing I fund the zolubtion !
I wired L2 to Neutral.
That got current feeding into the main transformer aaaannnnddd.... It kinda works... more.
The lights on the front light up and the volt and amp meter light up !
It just so happens they decided to power half the controller board on 220v and the other half on 380.
There's a transformer there to convert 380v to 30-7.5v stuff (why 380v?).

Now, I get a voltage on the output terminal .
And I also understand the whole 3 phase thing a bit better now.
It just so happens I have 3 phases spread around the house.
I'm going to take a very long extension cord and bring it to my room.
That will give me the extra phase I need.
If everything goes as planned, I will get it working this night.
I'll keep you updated.

>I'm going to take a very long extension cord and bring it to my room.

Just remember if you have one phase coming from one room and another from the other room and you pull one plug out you have 220v on the pins. Better to get a 3 phase line to a 3 phase plug. That way the gf is less likely to blow up when she pulls out your plug and gets fuged over by voltage from the other phase.

If you do get it working, I suggest making its maiden voyage something related to explosions.

Popping electrolytics by reverse polarising them gets more fun the more power you have, and 30 A at 60 V is quite close to the sweet spot.

You might want to try a few times. That huge transformer is going to require a -massive- startup surge if it's connected at the wrong time in the mains cycle. Your average household breaker will probably magnetically trip from that alone. Turn it on and have someone reset the breakers 2-3 times in rapid succession while you watch it for smoke/sparks.

(I've done this a million times when starting up oversized transformer based power supplies on domestic circuits)

>> No.688834

generally does not happen, rooms are wired to keep all receptacles of 120V on one bus bar, and all ceiling connections for overhead lights on the other. And in my state, all ceiling applications must be on a different bus bar than the receptacles. Mainly to prevent situations where a room can not have any powered lighting.

Personally, I'd run a dedicated circuit for this monstrosity the OP is messing with. And make my own test strip for full household current both 120V and 240V at 20A, and then set up a step down transformer to handle lower voltages for testing and experimentation.

But I ain't a fag that needs everything handmade and customized to keep me safe.

So I went through every goddamn power plug in the house. The breakers would constantly trip up every time. I guess they went for maximal safety when designing the electrical grid here.
But then, I remembered there was ONE plug I didn't try inside the house.
There's a anti nuclear bunker next to the cave (That's switzerland for ya) . And there is a ventilation system powered by a huge 3 phase power motor inside there.
THAT'S what it took.
A FUCKING ANTINUCLEAR RESISTANT NON-FUSED ELECTRIC GRID to power this god damn monster.
So I went to the local store and bought a 35 meter 3 phase cable for 80 dollars (flaming thieves) and powered the thing from down there.
The cable cost 4 times the powersupply guys.
4 times the cost of the powersupply, my friends....

Also, I guess ...hue... I guess in case of actual nuclear war....heh... guess I'm fugd.

So here it is, in it's full glory.
I seems to work for the moment, I still haven't powered anything extensively for now.
I had to share this with you guys before.

Now for the only bad news.
While getting it upstairs, I had a LOT of pressure on one of my fingers. It feels like I broke a nerve or something. It doesn't hurt but the tip feels like when you get itchy feet ?
It has been 2 hours already and the feeling does not get away. Did I fug my finger permanently ?

Dear OP,

If you feel tingling, it means that there's a problem. You should schedule an appointment with your doctor, at the very least. Chances are it's just a ligament partial/full tear, but if it persists it could cause permanent damage.

Palpate the area by the knuckles, if there's point tenderness then it's a ligament issue. Anything proximal from the wrist is a tendon issue i.e. carpal tunnel.

3 phase for residential is nearly always an option. the distribution transformers are fed with 3 phase. you can simply request a 3 phase connection. but it costs money. and I believe there is an extra maintenance fee related to its use. lots of tradies have it in their homes. but most people don't because we're not all operating 10 000W lights or industrial truck hoists in our backyards.

> 10mm aluminium frontplates milled for a decent price ?
Where you at ?
Do you only want to know where to mill them or also buy them ?
There's http://www.metallica.ch/ at Lausanne that has a small shop where you can buy high quality left overs. I bought some 10-50mm alu plates from there.
I have no idea about the milling.

How do you pay electricity bills in Europe OP? Or is it just taxes? Will this cost you much, much than $20 on the long run?

Best thread I've seen in months, btw.

Its ok OP, you did a better American Accent than Liam Neeson.
Pretty cool video too.

Next video you should blow up some components, caps explode and resistors catch fire for a sec. Theres already a few videos online of this, but not from a /diy/er.

Dildoes

Has anyone ever realised how weird that word it? Write it down sometime, you'll see.

OP, you glorious motherfucker. I won an Icom 0-15v 25A transformer based supply which has done me well. Make yourself a kickarse H bridge driver and wind a high frequency transformer(centre tapped), get some 6kV 300ma arcs, then make a full wave Cockcroft Walton multiplier for 30kV, and then drive a Marx impulse generator.

Aim for 2MV arcs.

I'm in Winterthur. The frontplates come with the cases I'm buying so I just need them milled. I'm getting some pesante/pesante dissipante cases from Hifi2000, check them out if you're curious. They have awesome looking cases at decent prices.
I actually discovered a few days ago that there's a metal working school here and they take orders for this kind of stuff. Gonna shoot them an email these days to see how much it would cost.

Op here,
Making the other vid.
Also, for anyone wondering why I had access to a Nuke shelter :
http://www.thecasualtruth.com/story/switzerland%E2%80%99s-bizarre-nuclear-bunker-law

I really want to send Fug a letter with some good chocolates.
Could anyone here correctly translate this to nazispeak ?

Dear Fug,
Thank you for the information you've sent me. It helped reviving the power supply I recently bought.
It's now 25 years old and still going, the same age as me.
It will serve well in high energy experiments and power electronics design.
Thanks again for your fast reply, I may not meet your average customer profile but if I ever find another of your products, I will buy it on impulse. The build quality is *out of this world* good.
- end

This thread and Fug as a company made me laugh hard.
Just found this is how they advertise their power supply testing on their own website :
http://www.fug-elektronik.de/webdir/Videos/FugHCKBogen3_4.avi
http://www.fug-elektronik.de/webdir/Videos/FugHCKBogen1.avi

> That file name
I'm thinking my story about how they came up with the name isn't so far from the truth.

Also, What the fuck. I can swear these machines are screaming. Wait....Could it be that Fug is just a coverup name for Hydra's technology department ? They certainly found a way to infuse angry spirits inside their products and are somehow going to use them to power a doomsday device.

Also, going full meta here but It has to be said.
I just looked at >>686721 again.
I already said I was 25 but is that thing saying it was made June 1st ?
Because shit, that's my birthday. I seriously have no way of expressing how wierd all this just became all of a sudden...
These guys had it figured out days ago.
