Mr. Underhill built one of these on his television show once. The difference between yours and his is how the head attaches to the handle.

In his, the handle mortise through the head was tapered gently from top to bottom, with a matching taper on the top of the handle. To assemble it the handle was dropped in through the head. This gave the handle lots of uninterrupted grain and no weak spot at the shoulder of the Tenon for stress cracks to develop.

I still DVR his shows on Saturday. Is he still alive and working? He, Norm Abram, and Captain Picard were the highlights of my childhood television.
