Hey /diy/

Some of you may remember me, I'm the guy building an emulation cabinet for his daughters.

I just test fit the wooden panels and also some of the electronic parts so I thought I'd stop by and post some pics of progress I have made.

Using a name for clarity~

After being advised I should build a stronger internal support I started building one. This pic is that support half built~

After that I put some of the back panels on, in keeping with my impatience most of this is just propped together as usual.

The back was altered just a little bit and now features wheels. I anticipate the final cabinet being quite heavy so this should help me move it around.

Second last pic~

I put most of the parts in at this point. I'm using a different monitor for the moment because the HDMI-VGA converter hasn't arrived yet. This is so I can configure the software and have all parts ready for when it does arrive.

looks fine, but i dont get why you bought a HDMI-VGA converter for a heavy CRT monitor instead of buying a cheap lcd from ebay

>>594529
I would always go CRT over LCD for something like this for dat glorious, old school gaem cab feel, though I would likely use a CRT TV with a composite video link for ultimate raster goodness. Interested in OP's rationale nonetheless.

>> No.594543

>>594538
I have a question. what is the laminate you apply over the chipboard called? how do you apply it? also, best not to have crts around children for fear of them falling on them.

>> No.594546

>>594543
I'm not OP, I was just lurking his last thread. I guess you'd want an adhesive laminate of some sort, like the shit your mum used to cover your school books with but thicker. I would always suggest ply over chipboard though, stronger, lighter, easier to work etc.

I imagine OP will have the tube secured.. securely into the cabinet so it can't fall out. I would be gutting the monitor and affixing the front bezel to a piece of ply with an appropriate sized hole cut out, then painting it all black. But again, let's see what OP's plans are.

>> No.594560

Looks great so far OP.

>> No.594570

>>594529

I went with the CRT because I felt it was more authentic I guess. LCD would definitely be easier I just chose to do it this way.

>>594538

I was originally going to use a p4 for this and I'd been saving the monitor for ages for that purpose. I decided to use the raspi instead somewhere along the line but I went with the monitor still because it was easier than hunting down an old tv at a thrift store or something.

>>594543

The cabinets a lot bigger than the monitor and the internal frame is about as heavy. It's stable enough that I don't see it going anywhere unless moved by an adult.

>>594546

Ill have a piece of chipboard with a hole cut in it slightly larger than the screen with a bevel at an angle and I'll make a bezel out of styrene to close the gap between monitor and the front board. These pieces will get painted black. Over that I'll put some perspex.

>> No.594582

OP has overbuilt the thing. there is absolutely no need to make an internal frame from sticks. i made a cabinet with drawers that holds 3000 DVDs (i.e. much more weight than an arcade machine), and it's just a box made from 3/4-inch press-wood using butt joints, with 1.5inch long screws.

Which does not need to withstand a child swinging excitedly from control sticks on the front. I'm glad flimsy suits your purpose, but if I were making something for my child that had a heavy-arse CRT in it, I would over engineer the shit out of it as well.

if possible, find a 486/286 and an old ass 80s monitor. the old EGA adapters and monitors are best. emulators these days are great but they just dont play quite right. many of the older games "cheated" using what we would now consider bugs in the hardware to make things run smoothly. quite elegant how they did it really. the problem is that the emulators work too well.

a) Spend all that time fucking about with IRQs and configuring DOS.
b) He can only run old DOS games.

The vast majority of stuff he'll want to play will almost certainly work fine in an emulator on modern hardware.

There are a lot of laminates, pick one. But when you attach it, use contact cement. Make sure it's aligned well and trim the edge with a router or "laminate trimmer". Pick a dark color.

Looks a lot like the one I built!

Excellent project, and I built mine out of stuff I mostly had sitting around.

Factory seconds MDF at $8 for a 9'x5' sheet, a couple sticks of 2x2 I had left over, and an old computer running Windows 98.

I just had to buy a used coin door (I wanted a functioning coin mech for MAME games), new Happ controls, and a $25 dollar controller bored (Because I started soldering up a keyboard, then got pissed when I had ghosting issues while testing halfway through soldering), and a piece of Lexan.

All said and done I had less then $100 and a saturday tied up in the whole thing. Plus a full week of evenings setting up the front end and emulators.

I wish I had a better pic on my computer. This one was taken before I designed the marquee and keypad graphics, and had a friend airbrush the sides. I'm actually thinking I didn't have the final coat of paint and clear on it yet. Originally built it 3 years ago, but I'm going to overhaul it in the next few months. I already put in a slightly newer computer (A 20 GB HDD wasn't cutting it, as I also use mine as a jukebox), now at 120 GB and windows XP (Nothing special, but I like putting old computers to use). I'm going to tint the lexan on the front, and hopefully find a bigger CRT. I'll probably redo the keypad graphics (To incorporate some of the menu controls), and put a sheet of lexan over them for a finished look.

If you have a monitor/TV lying around you aren't using, building an arcade cabinet is pretty cheap and easy. A RPi works great as a retro emulator powering the thing, too.

I asked my eldest daughter which she prefers, videogames or barbies, she told me she likes both in equally. My youngest daughter likes Ben10 and Ninja Turtles far more than Barbies and baby dolls. Kids like what they like mang, it's not a bad thing.

It's solid enough that I have trouble tipping it.
