569619 No.569619 [Reply] [Original]

I just recently got a 40-50ish gallon tank from my mother and law for my turtle. I was wanting to transform it into a terrarium and have half of the tank as a water area and the other half have sand or rocks or plants. That way the turtle has a place to get out of the water and kick it or I could also put some lizards and shit in there or something. I got some plexiglass and some aquarium safe silicone adhesive/sealant at the hardware store. I've got the stuff, I was just looking to bounce some ideas off of yous guise as to how I should set it up.

I'm contemplating whether I should put the glass in there straight up like a half wall and then have a ramp that the turtle can climb to get back to the water when on the land side of the tank, or if I should put the plexiglass in at an angle so it sort of makes a "shallow end".

tripcodes have been a part of 4chan since day 1, and the supposed "rules" you guys are spouting are nonsense. it is perfectly fine to use a tripcode to establish a persistent identity.

you can filter them if they bother you so much, or get CSS to not show names and trips.

however...it has always been against the rules to shitpost like you guys.

I already have one filter that I was using in her old tank. What I was thinking about doing was putting the plexiglass in as a half wall, like I mentioned earlier and arranging it so that the filtered water creates a waterfall into the land portion of the tank, and have it run down the length of the tank like a little river and have it run through a tube at the other end of the tank, pass through another filter and waterfall back into the water portion of the tank.

Not gonna lie, I'm pretty baked right now, so I'm not even sure if that made any sense, but if it did I sure could use some advice/ideas. I've never tried to mod an aquarium before any help not fucking it up would be great

I've got a 12"x12" sheet of plexiglas, that I'm probably going to shave an eighth of an inch or so off so that it fits perfectly. This is my first attempt at modding a tank. Plexiglas was the first idea I had, I knew it would work, and a square foot of it was $3.00. Can't beat that.

Another question that just came to mind is if I were to make a little river down the middle of the land side to provide water for plants or whatever land critters I throw in there, what would be the best thing to use? Maybe some PVC sawed in half?

So back to the 'river' idea. Would half a PVC pipe work well in this scenario? I don't want water ending up where it isn't supposed to and have it not recirculating.

I have news for you: as I said in my previous post, the only terrariums that are necessarily sealed systems are the maintenance free variety. If you never want to water your terrarium, sure, by all means, seal it. However, if you have live animals in there, it is necessary to keep it unsealed (so you can feed them and all that). plexiglass will eventually give way when you silicone it to glass. If you're still contemplating a stream or river. I think a small piece of pond liner or something similar would probably achieve a more natural look than a pipe cut in half. Evaporation not much you can do prevent that besides put a glasstop on your aquarium. Another idea would be to add a sump and overflow setup. Will increase your total water volume and you can control the water level in your display tank. You can also do any water changes or medication dosing in sump and it will mix better before it makes to your display tank.

I've never modded an aquarium like this. For the first year I had this turtle I kept her in a ten gallon tank with no filter on it, I just carried outside dumped the water, cleaned the inside, and refilled it a couple times a week.

When you say the plexiglass eventually gives way, do you mean that the silicone won't hold it in place forever, right? That's why I asked if it would be a good idea to add brackets or not instead of just sticking it to the glass.

>I've never modded an aquarium like this. For the first year I had this turtle I kept her in a ten gallon tank with no filter on it, I just carried outside dumped the water, cleaned the inside, and refilled it a couple times a week.

I have a 40 gallon (supposedly...but it only fills up the 5 gallon bucket 5 times when I drain it so SOMEBODY'S lying to me somewhere) and no way in shit would I want to deal with draining and filling this thing even weekly, let alone multiple times a week. You (very) technically don't need some sort of filter in it, but fuck me if I wouldn't rather wash toilet bowls for a week to afford a filter than have drain, rinse, and re-fill a tank over 25 gallons that often.

I don't know what this guy is talking about regarding silicone, acrylic, and glass. Silicone caulk is not an exceedingly good adhesive, and care needs to be taken in building a larger tank to ensure that it's not going to eventually give under the strain. However, it isn't a very weak adhesive, either, and will hold small tanks or tank features in place easily. You should be fine using silicone to hold things up, assuming they aren't exceedingly heavy and you try to ensure that the strain in the silicone is shear, not tensile (that is to say, silicone holding the features from the bottom is much stronger than holding it from the top).

Generally, silicone is good for approximately 20 years before it starts to degrade, though this can vary quite a bit depending on the cure type and formulation of the silicone. One-part, air-curing silicone (read: caulk) tends to last a pretty long time, though.

you talking for plants in water or above ground ?

if for water plants you can use either or. Sand will compact over time and hinder some possible root growth. Just "stir" up the sand every once and a while. For dirt its possible but I would cycle the tank for a couple of weeks so all the particles that are gonna float around to settle. I would use soil without any additives or perlite. Don't want some funky chemicals leaching into your water. There are aquarium soils but most likely you can only get at your local fish keeperstore (i.e. Not petco or PETsMART). One brand is ecosystems miracle mud.
