I have the transformer pictured and I'm trying to rewind the secondary coil to make a DC resistance solderer (I have pretty beefy bridge rectifier.) My problem is that I don't know how many turns I need and what gauge wire to use. Currently, I'm using 12AWG solid core house wire wrapped 5 times. That is just about as many wraps as I could get with 12AWG wire.

What happens when I fire this thing up is instant breaker tripping (15A breaker). I know how to do this with a MOT, but those have a primary that has a lot more windings than this transformer does. I've been thinking about using a smaller wire, down to 16AWG to fit more windings on. My current resistance solderer is 5V 30A and uses 18AWG and does quite fine.

So, any help on how to get this transformer to not trip the breaker and give me usable voltage (around 5V-8V) would be great. I know I'm missing something simple here.

Trips breaker with nothing on the secondary? Bad transformer or it's primary was wound for lower than direct connect to 120V.

That's what I'm thinking as well.

OP are you sure this transformer was made for 120V?

It is made for 110VAC to 125VAC.

Continuity is fine, so it isn't shorting on the chassis on either winding.

Ah, yes, I see the problem now.

>I cut the primary coil off instead of the secondary coil.

Luckily, I have other transformers to dick around with.

Toriodal tformer son. Makes winding on your own secondaries a helluva lot easier.
