Is there a non-conductive material that's good enough to make car & house keys out of?

>> No.551423

Huh. Well, theres ceramics. They wont wear down much from use but they are brittle. Plastics. They have non-brittle varieties but generally wear down pretty fast. Wood. Not great for stuff that small. Maybe just use a standard key and coat the handle with something non-conductive? I see plasti-dip mentioned on here a fair amount.

Why does it need to be non-conductive?

It's obviously possible to make keys out of something other than metal, but it's probably going to be both inferior and more expensive.

>> No.551463

I've seen plastic keys before. Some guy came into the shop with one in the shape of a credit card. You bent it out to insert it into the keyhole. The main problem you're going to have is that car and house keys aren't flat. It has to fit in the keyhole first then you can cut it to match the pins inside.

just get yourself a nice sheet of bulk polycrystalline diamond.

Wait it's not 2030 yet? Oh well OP, just wait until then.

why?

You might give FR4 a try, just don't push it too hard.

To get them past metal detectors which I have to pass through every god-damn day.

The same stuff you make non-conductive guns out of works fine for keys.

Nylon reinforced with fiberglass. It's use for rim lock's keys.

polycarbonate is good, eyeglasses are made out of it these days, they dont shatter, so you dont get glass in yer eye, and i was in a bike accident and had mine run over by a car, the lens' didnt break but they were scratched up, the rims were mangled to hell

No, it goes from silver to copper then to gold. Gold being the least conductive and silver being the highest.

>> No.551953

You probably want a composite since they will be rigid but won't shatter or break.

Carbon fiber would probably be the best, and would look cool. Its easy to machine with the correct cools as well.

Actually carbon fiber might be too abrasive, take a look at delrin.

Composites like CF/aramid/kevlar/fiberglass do exactly that instead of bendinf

Different guy,

The only guns that could be defined as being 'noncunductive' would be the 3d printed, one shot, small caliber, fly apart as you fire them variety.

The materials they are made from are not robust, they're certainly not suitable for replacing metal in most load bearing applications.

if i wanted to make a non conductive key copy i wouldmake a mold of the original useing instamorph then fill it useing quicksteel and if i had any fiberglass i would kneed it into the quicksteel

you dont have to 3d print to make a plastic gun
you just need a drill

Thankyou for educating him. Silver is actually worth more because of it's properties and because of what it can be used for. Gold is just cost more because it is rare and shiny.
