The bottom is polycarbonate held on with magnets.

Wow, that looks pretty fucking amazing. You made this yourself? I'm looking into making one for my NES and I have all the wiring ready and connected to switches but I don't have the box built. I can't decide on materials or how I want it to look and function. I'm thinking of making a storage compartment for the wires so I can store it neatly on my shelf without a giant wire hanging out the back of it. I also want to have removable overlays but i'm not sure how to do that when you have the joystick and buttons installed. I don't want to spend more than 20-30$ on wood and clear plastic but I don't want it to look like shit either, I have access to all the tools because my dad is a carpenter and has a work shop so he could help me build it.

Has anybody else built custom arcade controllers?

Custom fightsticks has been a thing for a long, long time.

You should spend a great deal of time on the wiring and get it all super nice.
Bonus points if you get newly manufactured cloth insulated wire.

I've looked at a few message boards but i hate navigating them and waiting on replies. I'm just curious if anybody here has advice for what I'm trying to make with a lack of skill which OP obviously has a lot of. I live in Canada so wood is cheap but I don't know what kind of wood or what methods to glue/nail it all together or what paint to use. I'll try making a mockup in paint and see what you guys think.

I quite like it, I just hope you keep with the classy theme when you wire it up, I would hand solder each wire to un insulated crimp connector and bolt those to each switch, use cloth insulated wire and thin twine+wax to bind them all together.
Would look SOOOOO good.

Don't listen to that guy.

>routes wires up the terminal blocks and bundles them all the way back down

Wasteful. Should have just routed them down and bundled below the blocks.

I was sort of wondering about that, not sure if there are other factors at play here or not.
However, I found something for OP: http://www.dairiki.org/hammond/cable-lacing-howto/

I suppose this was done in case extra length was needed in the future in case wires needed to be re-routed.

I don't see how, though. Everything goes to the ports on the bottom and there are no other outputs.

I don't think mine will be very messy since the NES only has a few buttons to wire up. I've decided to use Poplar wood if it is easily available in my area because it looks good and people say its easy to use and cost effective. I am just having trouble deciding the size. I would like to be able to print off an underlay design using my printer or just a white sheet of standard printer paper so hopefully if the wood is nice and thick I can make it a comfortable size to sit on my lap. I have my design all ready I just want to find a good way to secure the circuit board (I have the wires all soldered and glued on the board for extra strength) without it bouncing around inside the box. I am going with an external plug design so the arcade stick will have 2 female NES controller ports on the back of it (this way I can plug in a regular controller parallel if I want to switch styles without getting up) so I will have a long Male to Male wire that needs to be stored inside the box. I'm thinking of a spring closed trap door underneath so it doesn't come loose or rattle.

This is a REALLY GOOD website I found about making fightsticks.
