I've recently been interested in a couple of electronics projects (taking apart an old iMac, taking apart my TV set box to salvage the hard drive), but I've realized I don't have the right tools at all.

I have this shitty 65-bits-in-one kit, but A) it's not magnetic B) the shafts aren't long/narrow enough for certain jobs because you're just swapping bits and C) I'm lacking security torx bits.

What the hell should I buy, /diy/? I want to cover all my basics for electronics tinkering. Any recommendations for kits/brands/products?

if you're not putting the things back together then a hammer and a pair of pliers work wonders

The iMac is going to get its hard drive replaced, but the TV set box isn't going to be repaired.

And plus, I want to be prepared for the future!

if you don't do this seriously.. and don't have the cash for a good set.. then I'd recommend the harbor freight bit set... it has the security torx plus all the other bits your never going to need for about 10 bucks... hell take in the coupon on it... other than that.. buy a bit extender

Well, my college plan to become an electrical engineer (inb4 engineers don't do hands-on work), and I REALLY like electronics/circuitry, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to get serious with it in the future. I'm willing to drop some cash, depending on how much a good set actually costs.

Well shit, I think my mother has a dremel set. I'll ask her later today when she gets home.

See, that works fine until you get something like picture related.

This is on the iMac I'm fixing. The screw is about an inch and a half past a metal frame, and the gap is pretty tight. An exchangeable bit screwdriver tends to be really thick in the shaft, and can't get past the frame.

shit sucks op but you need to build up a collection.
i wouldn't buy a kit, you always loose bits and they are never as good.
just learn the screw types, buy what you need from a good name, keep them in a toolbox.

if you dont care about putting it back together then a drill and a set of metal bits can go a long long way

>> No.540471

Well, no, when I mean "recommend a kit" I thought /diy/ could recommend a set of individual screwdrivers, not one with bits. Or at least a website where I could order individual screwdrivers cheaply.

I use one of these at work. It will do everything you need to do. If you really want to work on Apple gear like that, get a set of torx drivers with t6, t8, t10 and t15 drivers. Don't worry too much about the quality of those, you'll hardly ever use them.

The bit sets are fine. Parts only go missing if you're careless.

Don't buy things like screwdrivers separately. You'll end up paying a lot more for them. More specialised tools on the other hand, those you're gonna have to get one by one.

are you sure that's the best option for op? it seems like ifixit would overprice things just because of how respected their name is.

True, but I ended up having to buy flathead, phillips, and torx singles simply because I needed sets of stubbies and really long ones for various jobs. It was getting a bit frustrating seeing a torx screw at the bottom of a tiny 6 inch hole and not being able to get anything down in there.

>> No.542681

It depends on how serious you are. A good set of screwdrivers is expensive as fuck. Screwdrivers, and bits especially are generally considered consumables.

I have wera and wiha stuff.

Just to add to all this security screws - if you like to, well, DIY, especially with respect to fixing various items you own, it's good to have a complete bit set. Home Depot will probably have a set or two but a local electronics store should have several. I recommend a short bit set like >>540464 has pictured. I have the one here (pic). I also have a set of the long skinny torx security bits which will work perfect on what >>540468 has pictured. I recently had my espresso maker crap out and the three screws that held the cover on were *4* inches deep in a recess that was too narrow for a stander bit-swappable screwdriver. A set of skinny-shaft torx security bits are about 6-8 inches long and very narrow (good to have...$10 to $12).

You can buy 6 inch long bits? Well shit. That's really handy information, anon.
