Hey /diy/ I want to get into soldering electronics and stuff and I was just wondering if this was a good setup to start out with?

can someone tell me If i'm missing some other essential tools

>> No.502521

Your gonna want some flux.

> rosin core solder

Why does he need flux?

>> No.502530

It makes life somewhat easier with SMD components. Not so much with through hole components.

>> No.502533

>>502528
because its useless where you have a large thermal mass to heat or are tinning wires, about the only thing rosin core works well on is quickly soldering through hole PCB's.

also if you have the cash OP, aim for a Fluke multimeter and you won't have to buy one again(lifetime warranty, built like tanks, actually meet there CAT ratings).

>> No.502551

I soldered a charging jack on my motherboard for the first time since I was like 12 the other day with a wood burning tool, rosin core and a soldering wic. Best way to learn in my opinion.

Me'thinks this guy is a long way away from SMD work yet.

>>502533
I solder "large thermal masses" (brass stock and tin harvested from aerosol cans) all day every day with nothing but rosin solder and a weller. Pic related, a leg for desk bipeds I make and sell. That hip is made of two layers of tin with a brass rod embedded in solder for the pivot. Unless you mean crap like copper pipes and plumbing generally, where flux is far more commonly used. You should be cleaning the copper side of your PCB with acetone or methylated spirits before you start anyway, this will remove the grease i'm guessing you think you need flux for.

>>502511
List looks good OP, I'd also suggest some side cutters and some wire strippers.

babby needs to learn to solder. that's complete horseshite.

I didnt even need to change the filename.

holy crap, I've never tinned a wire so beautifully

>> No.502599

I'd say get bare basics first, a soldering iron, a solder and flux. Second hand is your friend. Solder some shit, get experience, practice for a few days, just soldering shit together. Get your technique right. Trustme, those 10 hours of practice you put into it will speed up your projects and you will be making less errors.

Then buy a multimeter and a stand etc.

I'm going to ignore 'a solder' and skip straight to wtf is with all the morons on /diy/ who seem to think you need a seperate flux for solder? (SMD work aside) I have never seen anyone at my work/hack places use it for general soldering, none of my friends use it, I have never needed it on any of my tintoys like >>502563 or my own electronic projects (hell, i dont even own flux). all you need is a 60/40 rosin core roll of solder, period. thats the whole point of rosin core solder. it saves you needing to fuck around with a goopy mess on your board.

>> No.502610

>>502608
Separate flux is useful when tinning large (severeral sq. mm) cables i.e. leads on LiPo batteries used in RC models and their associated connectors. It also makes life easier if you're using crappy or old wire that may not be as clean as in >>502586

>> No.502616

>>502608
Flux is everything, mang.

I work with a lot of car wiring and flux is my friend.

>> No.502628

and fucking rohs solder needs extra flux

>> No.502859

Censoring the price? Who cares?

>> No.502894

Yea get some flux, you'll need it. Solder loves fluxified surfaces

Protip: get a flux pen. Shit is legit.

>> No.502899

>>502859
Good thing OP censored the price, then you get those annoying fucks who complain about the pricing and derail the thread with their bullshit.

>> No.503095

OP's list has 0.062" diameter solder. that's unacceptable for delicate electronics work: you need about half that size, or even smaller, like this 0.032 solder: http://www.concorde-electronics.com/acatalog/Multi_Core_Sn63_Pb37_063_X39_Wire_Solder.html

and no, you dont need any stinking external flux unless you're doing some sophisticated re-work.

>> No.503635

>>503095
After you've tinned the pad, the flux is gone. Won't help you when soldering the component in place. So yes, you do need extra flux.

>> No.503645

>>503635
Jesus christ, so many people ITT who don't know how to solder.

> insert component into through holes.
> flow fresh solder onto tip.
> heat pad and leg with tip.
> flow solder on once pad/leg junction heated.

Now go find a video that demonstrates a need to pre-flux a through hole board, or a wire splice, or stop feeding OP misinformation.

>> No.503679

I wasn't talking about through hole.

>> No.503685

I've got the exact same DMM. Got it off of Amazon. It works great for all my purposes (automotive). Really good meter, especially for the price.

>> No.503693

>>502563
>side cutters and some wire strippers
unless the wire has thick insulation, wire strippers are complete bullshit. I almost always have to use a sharp knife and my fingernail to strip wire properly.

>>502899
as if people complaining about rosin core vs. flux hasn't already derailed the thread.

>>503645
Thank you sir. Fucking newfriends on /diy/ this evening.

>> No.503706

>>503679
Oh. So you're talking SMD technique then? Even though OP is yet to buy his first iron? Very helpful advice. Why not crash course him on FPGA's while your at it..

>>503693
> this evening
They started shitting up the thread with poor advice days ago.

>> No.503708

>> No.503758

Not my fault you assume things that aren't there.

>>503706
You can't do electronics nowadays without encountering SMD, so better prepare early. But then again if you think wire splicing is electronics I can understand why your view is so narrow.

Also if you hadn't noticed it, no John, you are the shitposter.
