Yeah you're pretty much right, just try to sand it all evenly. Use power tools if your lazy and then touch it up by hand with some fine grit. Test some similar wood if possible to get stain results, or just do a small patch and sand it off if it looks off. I used a small piece of trim from my window to get my sills right.

Sand with a 120, then go to 500, apply a waterproof coat so It doesn't happens again.

cool thanks guys

sanding at 500 is a ridiculous amount of overkill, I'd say sand to 150 and then stain and laquer

Cabinetmaker here. We never sand anything to higher than 150 grit.

So I'm seconding this guy:

I agree with these guys. I sand with 80 to 120 grit before applying a finish, and 150 to 180 grit in between layers if needed.

Polite sage since I'm not really adding any new information.

You don't need to sand it bro. Put some mayo on it, let it sit for like 5 minutes, then scrub it with a rag or some shit. Believe it or not the mayo will take it right out.

Or peanut butter. Peanut butter is good too. I'd say try these before sanding the whole thing.
