491522 No.491522 [Reply] [Original]

So my bedroom was so hot last night that I had a panic attack which greatly disturbed me. I want to build some cheap A/C unit for my room because I am low on options. I already have tinted windows that reflect sunlight, I have blinds that keep out most light, I cannot open my windows at night because I live in Michigan and tiny gnats can fit through my screen. I am recovering from a severe poison ivy outbreak which made my testicles swell to the size of a large orange so the heat is making it worst. Please give me more than just a towel on a fan, thanks

>> No.491523

>>491522
there are no DIY-AC methods that work well enough to bother with.
save some money and go buy a real window AC unit--or a portable unit if you can't have an AC hanging out the window.

re: poison ivy--go to a doc and get steroids. you become more allergic to it as you age, and if you leave the rashes too long they will cause scarring.

How in the hell did you get poison ivy on your testicles?

>I cannot open my windows

You're fucked. Buy some finer screen, or put mosquito netting over your windows. Get a mattress cooling pad.

>> No.491540

AC is just one of those things where it's more cost-efficient to buyfag it instead of DIYing.

>> No.491544

Dude, combine water, ice, and ionized salt. Then, dip your junk in it. That's messed up.

>How in the hell did you get poison ivy on your testicles?
I am not OP, but,,,,,,,, if you are sensitive enough, you will get rashes all over from it.
Even places it never touched.
Even if you never touched it *at*all*.
I can get it from the smoke of a fire if someone burns a bunch of it, for example. :|

>> No.491550

>>491545

You're not supposed to burn poison ivy since someone could get it via air and actually choke on it if it closes their lungs. I kid you not.

I think you got worse problems to worry about than your room being too hot at night, kiddo.

No, I've had the same thing happen to me before.

I'll get over heated and wake up in a panic with my head spinning and overall feeling like shit. Lasts a few minutes till I cool down.

A really impromptu solution would be to get a cooler, fill it with ice and water, then put in a small pump and hook it to something like in your picture

>> No.491589

>>491522
>>491588
Also, a while ago I was thinking of making a human-powered air conditioner for shiggles.
my setup would be some sort of compressor pump hooked up to an exercise bike. pedaling would compress refridgerant into a radiator outside, then allow it to decompress through another radiator in front of a fan, which is also powered by the bike

>> No.491597

>>491589

Why not just make a pedal powered fan and put it to where it would blow on you whilst pedaling?

>> No.491600

>>491597
the objective is to cool the entire room

i know it's rather impractical.

>> No.491602

>>491600

Seems very impractical with a pedal powered device. Though I do have this small thing that is like an exercise bike but all you do is put it down in front of you and pedal. No handlebars or anything like that. It's in the living room gathering dust.

Also it seems like it would be counter-intuitive to pedal, thus expending energy and potentially sweating, when the objective is to be cool.

spend the $120 on a window unit

>human-powered air conditioner
You're stupid, do you know that?
Humans burn 4 times as many calories as they can deliver as physical work. Your "human powered air conditioner" would end up heating the space you're trying to cool much faster than just leaving a window open. LRN2PHYSICS, LRN2BIOLOGY

Make a battery array. In the winter, when it is cold, charge it with a bicycle/stationary bike that generates electric. Then in the summer use all that power to cool your place.

Win-win

>> No.491655

>>491652

You would have to dump a bunch of money to have enough batteries to power it all season.

A better bet would be to have the bike moveable so you could just take it outside and pedal it there at night for the following day.

If you can invent batteries that can do that cheaply, you are going to be a wealthy man.

Get some 5-gallon buckets and a dish towel/do-rag/pillow case. Put cold water in the buckets and stick your feet in them. Get the head wrapping soaked with cold water and wrap your head with it like a do-rag. If you have a fan, aim it at your body and head. Enjoy relief. Change water as needed. This can be a life saver.

Why is the human body so bad at cooling itself off

michigan fag here... what part of michigan are you in that you'd want to open the window anyway? friggin hit 95 today in GR.... hot as balls outside right now...

>> No.491699

>>491684
It's not.

In fact, it's been kicked around by the scientific community a few times that we evolved specifically to chase our prey until they overheated and died...to do so, we had to be able to run as much or more as our prey, and not succumb to our own techniques.

Humans are probably one of the best species for cooling itself off, we just don't like feeling icky in our modern world.

Because temps in the 90F range plus humidity past 85% = no sweat evaporation, overheating, and death.

Well I live in Okemos, and was adding that part so people don't say "open a window"
I wouldn't be able to add a window unit because my window opens sideways

But i did find a solution. The problem is I am far from my A/C unit in the basement so I blocked off all of the unneeded vents in the house and added a fan in my closet attic entrance that will draw the hot air out of my room. Will have pics tomorrow

people actually did this, and they still do. persistence hunting is gaining a cult following in the hunting community. except its done as a team thing where they circle up and take turns running the animal down.

>> No.492200

Get a furnace filter and put it in your window screen. Tape the edges. Then, get a box fan and run it at night. Michigan isn't that hot so you should be ok. For extreme results, fill many 2 liter bottles with darkened water (ink) near the fear. That will give your room additional thermal load so it takes longer to heat up during the day. You would need a lot of bottles for that to work though.

Or, you can find a broken ac on craigslist and try refilling it with a refrigerant kit made for cars.

Hollandfag here. It's been so humid especially living near the lake. At least the lake cools it down a little bit. As for a DIY AC unit, I've heard of getting a burlap bag and soaking it in water and then draping it over a box fan as sort of a ghetto ac unit.
