austrian streetartist reporting in

doing stencils for about 3 years now, not only on the streets also on canvas, wood and t-shirts

the best way to make your own shirt is to print out your logo, take a piece of thick paper (no cardboard, just a thick piece of paper) put spray-adhesive on it and put your printed logo in it. let it dry and start cutting it out with a sharp blade. then take a piece of cardboard and put it between your front site of your shirt and the backside, align the stencil of the shirt. use regular spraypaint (acrylic or textile) and start painting

I bought a cheap silk screen and squeegie from an art supply store and a bunch of different coloured fabric inks. I made the NES controller stencil in GIMP but the awesomeface one I found on 4chan. Printed out the pics then transferred them to butcher's paper. Cut out the stencils with a model knife, sticky taped them to the underside of the silk screen and positioned it in place. Put enough of the ink onto the screen, squeegee'd across the screen once and scooped the excess ink back inot the container for later use. Let it fry, ironed it for a good 5 minutes or so and it was done.

Easy peasy.

And from what I've heard it's okay to use. Someone who did multi-layered and -colored shirts (I've seen a few finished ones) said he used acryl based paint and did the painting with an airbrush.
Basically I want to use an airbrush because it's much cheaper to buy acrylic paint for 2€ and get a liter/more out of it than buying 400 ml spraypaint for 4€. But I'll try both and share results whenever one should ask.

>>4029
This already is a stencil. I don't know what you mean by 'converting'
If you want to put it on a shirt, do this:

1) Get a white 100% cotton tee. No questions, just use it. You may use other kinds/colors later
2) Buy black spray paint (buy from a graffiti/art store. Hardware stores usually sell overpriced)
3) Print the image of the lady out
4) Use a utility knife/exacto to cut the black parts of the image off the paper. There should be space instead of the black spots now.
5) put your finished paper over the tee and spray over the spaces in the paper.
6) look at the final product

This is a very basic and very easy form of doing it. But just go ahead and try it, it'll give you a basic idea of what is good to do and what is not. You can spray the shirt until there's no space left/the can is empty. Now practice, and please make nice stuff.

And always lurk moar

Anything involving fabric is probably best directed to /cgl/, OP, but I've got your solution regardless.

Pick yourself up some contact paper and an exacto knife, cut out the stencil you want, paste in onto the shirt, and paint screen printing ink in your color of choice onto the stencil with a regular brush. Give it however many layers will be necessary for the color brightness you want. After it's totally dry, put the shirt into your dryer for a full cycle so that it sets. If you want to be sure it sets, iron the shirt with aluminum foil over it, NOT DIRECTLY.

Dude. You can't do shit with that. Just look at the hair, wayy to many islands. lrn2bridge

unless you post the white layer that may be sprayed on top of the black one (which is a really bad thing to do), this fails pretty hard.

You could however do some simple bridges right now so that when cutting it out you can have at least an idea of how you should cut.

you should also scale the image up quite a bit (the mouth, eyes etc are way(!) too small to work with. If you attempted to print this, it'd take up a quarter of the A4 at best (printing the image you posted in it's original size).

Scaling it up would make a lot of things easier - and harder. because you would be able to see how to work with eg. the mouth - would, if it wouldn't be pixelated as hell.

But you're using the right effects so far. Try cutting some of the layers in half so that it will be possible to achieve this pic with several layers of stencils.
Then again that's why I prefer properly bridged stencils. you just need one piece of card. Except for multi-colored pieces of course.

Anyway I'd love to stay and explore /diy/ further but I have to do homework now. Good night/day fellow /diy/fags!

Sorry man I just messed with the filters I know I could have done a better job. I'll try harder this time and I'll follow your tips. Thanks btw. I've never done stencils before but they're quit fun give me a few minutes.

You're lucky I checked /diy/ again before going to bed.

You ALWAYS start with the lighter colors first. That means from white to black. If you attempt to spray white on black, the black will pretty much "eat" the white.

Check out this
>pic
And then this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKccW3onMQE

As you can see, the wall I was spraying on is kind of grey-ish. Now if I attempted to spray green/gray/whatever, the color would look darker, because of the surface. If the surface you're using is dark, you can expect your final product to be darker than your actual colors are. That's why I sprayed white in the background in that vid.

Feel free to ask me anytime you see my trip :)

So how should I cut this stencil >>6518
so it won't fall apart when I'm spraying it ? Any tips ?

Please do the internet a favor and stop using cheesy video editing "tricks". That bit where the image was trying to pulse in time with the rhythm of the background music was groan worthy.

Actual video content was neat though. Thanks for that.

Yeah see, THAT'S what I was screaming out in all of my previous posts.
There are a lot of motherfucking islands in there. You know what an island is?

Now assume you have cut this stencil out and want to spray it onto a white wall.
You want your stencil to be correct. But you left places that are supposed to stay white in the middle of the black WITHOUT ANY CONNECTION TO THE ACTUAL CARDBOARD YOU'RE USING.
So think of this: If you cut the black all around the white spot out, the white which was in the black will disappear, fall away with the black.
look at my pic to understand

It was in sync with the rythm but fucking youtube was mad about the pirated song so I had to change it. but you couldn't know that so I'm not gonna say shit

So guys, I'm going to finish this day and this thread off by saying thanks for your advice, I've learned great t-shirt stenciling techniques today.
And I hope I could be helpful. Looking forward to chat some more.

I'll probaby start/join a stencil thread next week and post pics of the finished tee.
Goodnight ♥

How durable is the acrylic paint on fabrics?

>> No.11258

If you go to a craft store and read the uses of acrylic paints of different brands, it'll say if it's ok to use on fabric. There are paints made to be durable.
I've painted a lot of shirts, and I've made my own stencils. I've sold shirts that I've made and none have came back with any issues, and i've washed mine many times and nothing has flaked off. I use acrylics.
