Hey /diy/, I have a question on fixing a car that will involve creative thought. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and there were roller bearings to keep the door at 1/2 and full open. They made shitty rollers so the top wears and spits bearings, eventually it all shatters leaving behind what look like capstans(shaped like a spool for thread). Without the rolling parts the capstans start to wear on another part. Replacement means removing the door, grinding out the old ones and welding the new ones in place and hoping it doesn't happen again. Somebody online said they forced in nylon spacers. I'm going to get some later. I've also cut some thick washers at work and have some really hard vinyl tubing about the right size. Anybody have any other ideas of what I can force in to replace the shattered roller?

Have you thought about using brass bushings? To be honest, unless you rebuild it, you're just band aiding the problem. Also, you may want to see if there's a removable door after market mod. Might be less work.

That is not a bad idea a brass bushing or ring cut and smashed into place. I just wonder if the other part is harder than brass though I'm sure it is. The problem, I don't think there is an after market mod. Jeep eventually released those pain in the ass rollers after people complained about the only fix available which was to cut out the welded in hinges and weld new ones in. It is tempting to try to figure out some mod.
