Does anyone know how to get mold out of this leather bag? I found it in my closet and I think it was a coin purse back in the day. I would really like to use this for something but the mold on it is disheartening.

Pic related. The black is the mold.

You could try going to a beauty supply store and getting some high concentration hydrogen peroxide and soaking it in it, but I don't know if it would dissolve the leather too or not.

That would ruin the leather for sure.

boil it?

Or make it into medieval armor.

when you boil leather a lot of the tannins leak out essentially leaving you with a thickened hard piece of leather that cracks easily

as for op you could use a water bleach solution idk how that would affect the leather though, might just make yourself a pouch like that

Damn. I thought boiling would do the opposite of that. I thought it would make it softer. Thanks for letting me know that.

nope if you wanna make leather softer use some saddle soap / mink oil/ leather conditioner on it make it nice and soft

Oh I see. I will do that next time I have hard leather.

So bleach would be good to get rid of the mold?

maybe it will kill the mold but like i said i don't know how it will effect the leather.
we had black mold in our basement so we had to take out the sheet rock and bleach all the inner walls and scrub them.
so you might give it a try, might ruin the leather i don't know.

Weak bleach solution, it's one of the easiest ways to kill mould spores. 95%+ effective.

Brush off any loose mould (wear a mask or work outside if you want to be cautious), wipe it down with the bleach solution, wipe off the excess moisture with an old towel and then leave it to dry slowly (NOT by a heater or in the sun).

The leather shouldn't stiffen up appreciably (I've done this a couple of times on boots and a leather jacket or two), but if it does there are ways to counter it so don't sweat it.

Coin purse or tobacco pouch.
