Hi /diy
I'm going have my own apartament soon, and I'll be going for a retro-on-high tech style.

For example: some nice PC and peripherals, monitors, nice headphones, and some oldish keyboard (like in this pic I took from /g).
A music room with recording devices, a computer, nice audio, a little midi keyboard and a violin.
Some cool TV set, a home theatre would be nice. All set up to play with a NES.

Can I have some advice/recommendations/ideas about this?

>> No.450556

if you actually know your shit and are building your own PC or already have one built use a beige box as a case for that retro look

Cool, I'll have a hard time choosing between old keyboard or old case. I think both would be too much.
I just remember I have an old case with one of this bad boys in it.

I see this every day, and its annoying.

People buy all of these expensive electronics, and then set it all up on a picnic table, and use a garbage chair.

My advice is that you start learning about furniture. Buy a real wood desk to put everything on - possibly an executive desk with a leather top. Having a ton of electronics and a NES is going to scream;

>"I'm a man child who only knows about games and computers."

By the way, the keyboard you pictured is a 1985 IBM Model M, buckling spring keyboard. It makes a load mechanical click when you press the keys. You can get them in black. I have about a dozen and have taken one apart, they're tanks. The headphones are garbage. The monitors are cheap. That desk looks like its all owned by a six year old. The cable routing is a disgrace.

Get some real furniture... geek out later.

Yeah, that anon's stuff was just to show the keyboard, personally I think that three monitors are way too much, as I'm not into games, and his wires management is horrible.

As to furniture, I've been thinking of ordering a custom desk, as I can't find one that adapts to my needs. Can you recommend something on that matter? I don't know much about materials and such.

Thanks for the info on the keyboard, I like how it looks, but I'll have to try a coupe models before buying one.

There are two grades of furniture in this day in age - real furniture and fake furniture.

Real furniture is made out of real hardwoods, solid wood pieces, stained and clear coated.

Fake furniture is made out of a particle or fiber board, and then coated with a veneer or plastic, so that it looks like real wood.

Almost everything is going towards being fake, because the middle class is dying in America, and the poor and lower class is growing. All furniture from the beginning of time - 1960's is real hardwood furniture. From 1970 - present, companies have been making garbage. You can still get real new furniture, but its FUCKING expensive.

I suggest using craigslist to find old used and warn furniture at bargain prices. Consignment shops are also amazing for finding gems.

I have a $2000 (new) Sligh 1963 executive leather desk in my bedroom that I use for my laptop. Its built out of solid cherry, its about three feet deep, so the draws are also three feet deep. I bought it for $85 from someone on Craigslist who had no idea what it was - some Mexican who inherited it from his folks. There's a ton of dumb kids on craigslist selling valuable things to support their drug habit.

Dovetailing is also a sign of quality construction. Google it. When draws are dovetailed, you'll know you've found a hand built piece of furniture that's worth money.

I started building my own furniture a few years ago. Building a solid desk is a TIME consuming process, dovetailing the draws, routing the top, staining, clear coating. It really makes you appreciate the quality of wood furniture, and you'll understand why it costs so much. If you try to "order something", it's going to cost more than its worth, and it will be built with lower quality supplies. Right now is a golden age to find good looking bargains from the 50's and 60's. When that stuff's gone it will be very hard to find real furniture anymore.

Draws = drawers. I have no idea.

For the record, IKEA is furniture designed in Sweden and built in the third world. Its not high quality at all.

What are the needs you have for a desk btw?

>> No.450593

>>450587
But its enough quality and good for its price.
If I were going to spend more though, I agree there are much better options

>> No.450598

>>450593

Its all made out of fiber board, so I would hardly call it quality at all. I'm of the mindset that if you can't do it right, don't try to do it at all. I'd rather live in an empty room for a while and save than throw money at shit I'll be breaking down and sending to the dump.

Craigslist is FULL of real wood furniture for next to nothing. Get a scratched up piece of wood rather than a new plastic desk. I know you're not OP btw.

I'm in Argentina, so Ikea stuff is imported here and it's not cheap compared to other brands, but it's certainly a good choice when buying imported furniture, thanks.

>>450582
Well that's surely some nice furniture, cherry looks really good. But it actually goes over my needs.
You are right about those guys throwing nice stuff away, I'll lurk some related sites.

>>450587
I just want a cheap PC desk with some parts aiming for functionality, like drawers and such, keeping it lightweight and apartment-friendly. I think that makes me exclude desks made of nice materials.
I think it'll follow the style of the one on this pic.

>>450598
The longer I lurk sites looking for a desk, the more I think I should make my own. As for the price, I have a carpenter friend, so I think he won't hit me too hard.
Also I'm OP, I'm posting as "Anon".

>Also I'm OP, I'm posting as "Anon".

Yeah I noticed.

If you have a carpenter friend build a corner desk like the one you pictured, it shouldn't coast too much.

You've got Brazil next door to you, so finding quality woods should be super easy. Argentina is one of the upper scale countries in the world in regards to to style and class. Local thrift stores might have some good finds. Wish I could peruse them, I'm curious.

>> No.450627

>>450612
Yeah, local stores have some nice stuff.
I can give you a couple links to some popular selling sites if you want.

Argenbro here, I hope OP watched the thread.

It's super easy to make your own furniture here, we have superb woods, and the price is literally a steal, super cheap. Don't take it to a carpenter, just make a flat, conventional desk: a board and 4 legs.

As for retro shit, look here: http://www.compucanjes.com/
Lots of retro electronics, cheap as fuck

If you are here, reply and we could exchange some mails in our language to be more comfortable

Cheers

>>450612
Erudite, you would be disappointed. Our thrift stores are a joke, it's impossible to find nice shit for cheap.
On the other hand, most people really value real furniture, my bed, night table, armoire and computer desk are all made from real wood, and I bought them new from several stores, 1 or 2 years ago.
Of course laminated crap is making their way into stores, but real wood stuff is not expensive.

Yes man, I'm still here.
I decided I'll be taking a carpentry course for the furniture part.

Um. That keyboard is not chosen because it looks "retro", idiots.

This guy knows what he is talking about : >>450568

That keyboard is picked because it is one of the best ever made, and lasts forever, not because of how it looks. They are also pretty expensive these days because of their reputation.

OP, you clearly have no taste and no concept of design. Beige computer boxes are hardly "retro" they are just ugly. Cheap furniture looks cheap, most modern electronics look cheap and electronics from the 80's - 90's look even cheaper (for the most part).

Combining cheap looking modern electronics with cheap looking "retro" electronics is just going to make you look even cheaper and more like a complete loser. Find someone who actually understands design and get them to help you.

This guy is correct, don't take advice from /g/ or model after /g/. They love the IBM model M because they jerk off to eachothers "battlestations" based off of whether or not it has a specific set of "/g/-approved" hardware. You can get a mechanical keyboard that isnt a jerk off keyboard like the M. If you care about the "design" of your desk, don't ask for help, just buy what you like.

I don't want to look like I have expensive stuff, or have some design designers would like. I just have a style in mind, notice that I never said I would buy that keyboard or that table.

>>451824
I won't be sitting on my desktop all day, nor I will be taking pictures of it to show them off in the internet.
This is just to represent two hobbies of mine, old and new technology.

My friend wanted me to build a PC into this ancient IBM case a while back.... it was terrible. We kind of take for granted how standard everything is now, I had to tailor all the connections for the case fans, LED and buttons.

Hey, dude. Quality furniture is not extinguishing. I'm in Mexico, carpinter in learning (son of a carpinter) and all of the people (most of them) want and have the will to pay the money for a quality made piece of wood. The woods that we use most are cedar and banak, just as pine (for people who want a cheaper option). They are a really good to work with and you can get very quality feel and looks.
But about the drawers (yes we can make any type) we don't often make dovetailing becaus we don't have the machinery to do it. Instead of that, we focus a lot in cabinets. We take lots of detail in doors. And the finish is almost perfect.
You get what you pay us for (and sometimes you get more).

Pic related, a $4000 bar.

Honestly, these days, I prefer metal furniture over anything. I'm too poor and all of the stuff I find in the thrift stores and on Craigslist is either extremely worn or fake shit. At least with metal furniture everything looks nice.
