Hi /diy/, this is the knife i'm making. It's very small (just 17cm-6.7in) because i want to carry it in my pocket, or not so visible.
I can't decide if make a grip of G-10 (homemade too, because i can't buy it here) or make it of wood.
Also i will need a Sheath, i want a kydex one, but i can't find it neither, there is some other plastic similar? maybe pvc?

What the hell is up with your metal stock?

Did you not pay attention and burn the shit out of it in the fire?

>> No.416455

>>416447
No, it's just what i have in that moment. I didn't have much to choose.
By the way, i too lazy to start my furnace yet. Maybe next winter.

>> No.416567

Did you actually properly heat-treat that? It sounds like you just grinded away at a random chunk of steel you found laying around.

G10 can be easily bought online. Not sure how you would "make" G10 at home. Micarta is definitely doable though as is wood.

There isn't really an alternative to kydex, again just get it online. If not, then leather.

it was annealed before cutting and grinding. After i finish the blade and the holes for rivet i will temper it.
About g-10, isn't hard to make, but i'm too lazy to do it. I can't buy it, because i live in a "socialist" country that forbbiden people to buy what they want, we can only buy what goverment's friend sell.

Are you Canada too?????

No, worst than Canada. in the fucking 3rd word.

You obviously have access to the internet. Still not seeing why you can't simply just buy G10 online like everyone else (even if it is apparently illegal).

That said I find it hard to believe you live somewhere that lets you go on 4chan but doesn't allow you to buy something as simple as G10...

Yes, you can buy it, pay it, pay the taxes, but it will never arrive. Because the post office will never deliver your package. And the FedEx, UPS and DHL services are so restricted, than now they charge up to 300usd per kilogram to deliver it.
After all that, you can sit and wait at least 4 month to receive what you buy (if you're lucky)

Either you have no idea what heat treating is or you just use the wrong phrases.

"Tempering it" will not do anything in this context.

What exact material is it?

>> No.417288

micarta

>> No.417303

>>417280

I meant the material of the blade.

Seems likely English is not his first language. It may also be that the direct translation of tempering means different things in his native tongue.

OP, some links to help with terminology:

Search making micarta. Its useful for much more than knife scales if you can make it. It can be made from basically any thin, flat material and resin. Woven materials provide more strength but I've seen it made from paper and old jeans.

nice knife op, I'm in the process of forging one from a steel file and tempering/heat treating it.

As for the sheath, the ultimate in DIY:

http://advancedsurvivalguide.com/2010/11/17/a-no-cost-alternative-to-kydex/

cut it and form it, rivet it together for lashing/belt loop. If you dont like the color, paint it.

No, english isn't my native language.
Temper i mean when you heath the steel over 900ºc to form austenite, and then control the cooling proces to obtain an especific iron estructure (ferrite, etc..)
>>417303
I guess that the word "templado" in spanish means "quenching" in english. And "revenido" means "temper", maybe i confuse with that word.
The steel is SAE1070.

Thanks, i will give a try.
Looks better than pvc.

>> No.417574

allright, then it will work ;-)
I've hardened that steel myself and it is easy to work with.. The structure you will form by quenching from hardening temperature (I'd choose something along the lines of 800°C) is called austenite.

>> No.417790

>>417574

I meant the structure you make by heating is Austenite, the structure you form by quenching is martensite.

>> No.418152

>>417790
ah, ok. i was searching the isothermal conversion diagram to look that. because i have the doubt if is martensite or austenite.
i probably gonna do a very bad job tempering the metal so is not critical.
thanks
