sweet wallets. 100% duct tape. I'd post pics of mine, but its a bit old and worn... red and black 1cm square checkerboard weave on back, looks sweet and adds support, bi-fold, license slot in the middle, card slots on the sides with each slot alternating between red and black.

Ducttape is all about layering, the more layers you have, as well as where you put the seams is the key to their strength. Also, the BRAND you use matters. I've found the Henkel/Duck has the best colors, but the 3M tape is the thickest/strongest.

I find it works best as a D ring style belt.

So yeah, you can't just use one piece, you have to build it up.

>> No.36995

Items i used:
-a nice flat dollar bill (for measurement purposes)
-credit/gift card(s) (also for measurement)
-rolls of duct tape (obviously)
-Xacto knife
-HARD CLEAR plastic ruler. This is important, you want to be able to run the xacto along it like a pencil without it cutting in. Clear helps line everything up, and making sure cuts are fairly perpendicular/parallel.
-plastic cutting board. Was nice because it didn't leave anything on the duct tape or remove much stickiness.

For all the assembly and cutting, stick it onto the cutting board without any bubbles to ensure accurate cuts. Do this by putting the end of the tape down flat, and smoothing it down with the ruler from that end until at least .5" longer than you will need, then cut from the roll with the knife or scissors. Then cut, peel up and use. Make sure not to fold corners under when peeling it up.

First, figure out the total dimensions you will need. You want the bills and all the cards you want to fit. I made a trifold, so I had to make it long and tall enough for 3 cards plus space around them for folds/edges/attachment space for the pockets.
Mine ended up being roughly 9"x4.5".

Start out by making a duct tape sheet of the color you want the inside to be. It should be the size you decided your wallet needs to be to fit everything, so in my case 9"x4.5" (from now on I'll assume you're making mine).

To make the checkerboard weave on the back, you need 17 or 18 vertical strips (.5"x4.5") and 7 or 8 horizontal strips (9.25"x.5"). To make these, cut strips of duct tape the longer dimension long, and 1" wide. Then, very carefully, fold it in half on itself. Precision is very important because any tape exposed will collect grime and be very noticeable. If you want, you can make the strips slightly wider than necessary so you have a little wiggle room, and trim after folding.

>> No.37006

>>36995

>> No.37091

to weave the strips, take a 1"x9.5" strip (unfolded) and a 1"x4.5" strip (unfolded) and fold them backwards in the middle (.5" on either side") and press them like that for a minute or so between the ruler and the cutting board. You want them to stand up at a right angle or less when one side is stuck to the cutting board. Place them like this, with half sticking in the air, in an "L" shape, with the inside edge corner touching. This is what will end up being half of your border, as well as hold the strips in place.

Take 7 long strips and attach them to the short leg of the L. LEAVE AS LITTLE SPACE BETWEEN THEM AS POSSIBLE AND MAKE THEM ABSOLUTELY PARALLEL TO EACHOTHER AND THE TOP (LONG) 1" STRIP ATTACHED TO THE CUTTING BOARD. I can't stress this enough. If they aren't perfectly perpendicular, your wallet back will end up crooked and have funky bulges. After they are all attached to the short edge piece, stick the ends down on the cutting board. You should have 8-9 strips of duct tape that look just like your sheet you already made, with cuts in it.

Take the 17 short strips, and start weaving them in, attaching them to the top edge and weaving/sliding it in through the black strips. After every new strip, push the short strips as far to the short edge as possible without folding. This keeps the lines all straight, again preventing funky bulges later.

>> No.37104

Once you have them all woven, lift up the holding edges and fold the long edge (ONLY) over (this will be the top edge), making sure you have a nice straight line and fold parallel to the long strips in the weave. Take another 1"x4.5" piece and attach it to the other short end. Take a 1"x9.5" and fold it over the long edge, just like on the top.
This completes your back.

Take your front (earlier sheet) and back, line up the ends, and fold over the 1"x4.5" pieces, this attaches the sides of the bill pocket. The woven sheet will be slightly longer than the plain one, this is INTENDED. It allows it to fold naturally later.

Now, cut a 1"x2.5" strip, marking the middle of the 2.5" edge in some way. Find the middle of the woven sheet and the middle of the plain sheet (long side). Now, duct tape the woven to the plain sheet. ALL THESE CENTER LINES *MUST* LINE UP. Fold over. This is the first section of the bottom of the bill pocket.

Take 2 more 2.5"x1" pieces and line up one end with each end of the wallet. Attach and fold over. You should be left with 2 bumps in the woven section between the sections of tape connecting the bottom that should look familiar if you've ever had a trifold wallet before.

The bill pocket section of your wallet is complete. Congrats. You are now going to want to fold it into 3rds (CAREFULLY) and stick your ruler inside and push on the inside edges a bit to ensure they are bent the correct way. Stick this under a large stack of heavy, flat (DRY!) items and leave it there at least over night.

Open it up and add your pockets. These are made by taking a 1-sided sheet of duct tape (that is still sticky on one side, so not really a sheet) cut to the outside size of the pocket (4.5" tall and progressively less wide each pocket) and attaching another sheet facing the opposite direction just larger than a card, that sticks out .25" to .5" past the edge of the first sheet. Attach them and fold the exposed bit from the second smaller sheet over. Then attach it to the outside edge of the side flaps with the 3 remaining sticky sides down, widest first and stack them.

Essentially what you just did was make a sheet, except with 3 edges remaining sticky for attachment purposes and the last edge folded over to keep it from sticking to the pocket beneath and preventing access later.

>> No.37141

Attach as many of these as desired to either side, i alternated colors to make the red and black stripes.

To make the ID slot, you do essentially the same thing except wider and then cut a hole out of the middle. It's important to leave some of the double-layer around the edge when you cut to hold your card in without it getting sticky.

That's about it. Any questions?

a few things to keep in mind:
this is a prototype, built solely to see if the flash drive thing was possible.

I thought that too while I was making it.

Leather:
-generic

-no assembly required
-solid color designs, colors restricted to somewhere between tan and black
