thats a toss up. urinal drains get stopped up with crystalized ammonia from time to time. the smell is hard to describe but when a drain cleaner is flinging that shit all over you it can be disgusting.

and then there was this dentist office....
you know the thing they suck you mouth out with? well this particular dentist office was really long and skinny, and the drain for that sucking machine was hung at either end, but not in the middle. enter me. and that pippe is full of blood, teeth, spit.. all collected in the middle. and i got to cut it open with the sawzall. a whole can of air freshener did nothing. in a crawlspace btw.

>>358389
thats a tuff one to... there is such a wide variety of problems... if i had to say one thing its this.

if you have to call a plumber, NEVER call roto rooter. they charge huge rates compared to most smaller companies. and they are not the only ones who can clean drains.

i cant believe i forgot to mention this.
dentist office from above post.
when the plumbing was first installed there was a comode at the far end of the plumbing that kept the drains washed out. the dentists decided to remove the toilet and there wasnt enough water to keep things clean with the old cast iron pipes. this pipe (suprisingly) didnt smell to bad really.

>>358393
that really depends. a lot of the new comodes do an excellent job of keeping drain pipes flushed out. but that is only if you have pvc drain pipes that are sized properly. a drain can be to big. (see pic) that said, when the low flush comodes first came out, the didnt have them figured out. many improvements have been made since then. i will post a toilet hack in a second.

in most of the newer low flush comodes, they have a very tall tank and a large 3 inch flapper that closes quickly.

this allows the water to have more force and flow, for a shorter amount of time.

some older toilets used a flapper like the one pictured. so get a toilet with a tall tank and 3 inch flapper. then buy a flapper like this one, and put the float on your 3 inch flapper and wa-lah you have a super flush commode.

>if you have a pressure regulator, it may be malfuntioning. replace it.

>if the problem is only in certain faucets, check the airiators. no results? check the supply lines to the faucet. those braided ones stop up real easy.

and the worst of them all...
>galvanized pipes. the rust and stop up. suddenly your 1/2 inch pipe is a 1/4 inch pipe. and that cuts the flow down exponentially.

There is a hole on the floor about 1.5" deep around a 2" pvc pipe about flush with the floor.

if its a returning problem there may be a problem with the drain itself. if you feel brave go into your basement/crawlspace and try to take a level to the drain and make sure it isnt running uphill. water only goes down hill. if you just need a quick fix before christmas, you need to plug off the overflow with a towel, and plunge the drain with a plunger.

and put your back into it! dont be afraid to get dirty, your gonna have a working shower after this, remember?

if that doesnt work, you can try one of those cheap drain snakes from walmart, but they dont work to well.

also go easy on the chemicals. they rarely work and they are very hard on the pipes.

The valve that diverts the water up to the shower is leaking. What style is it? Is it integrated in the faucet or is it part of the plumbing on the wall?

If it's like this, it's probably pretty easy to fix, you just need to buy a replacement faucet from the hardware store and unscrew the existing one and put this back on. You'll need Teflon tape and a universal faucet kit. It'll have enough parts to figure out how to replace it. (It depends on how it's plumbed behind the wall) The most annoying thing to happen will be unscrewing or loosening the pipe in the wall and getting that back in the hole. The worst thing that will happen will be if you don't put enough tape on correctly and then it leaks very slowly in the wall and you get dry rot.

knob next to faucet handle-- call plumber

if you already have city water, they frown upon well drilling. and its pretty expensive no matter who frowns upon it. also, wells will vary GREATLY from one area to they next. at my house, there is clean drinking water 15 feet under your, well, feet. but iff you drill over 35-40 feet, you hit rusty water. but jut a few miles east, i have seen wells over 100 feet deep that cant get a decent supply. so know your area.

i avoid any chemicals in drains like the plague. they will eat away your pipes. and we hate cleaning drains after people have used these chemicals, because they are so potent, they will rust our drain cleaner after we clean a drain with that stuff in it.

the ONLY exception is copper sulfate. and copper sulfate will only work to kill tree roots. it clogs the roots from getting water, and they die. but it wont kill your tree. best if used before bedtime, when it can sit in the sewer overnight.

scale of 1-10? depends on the job. one day im trudging through sewer water or getting cigarette ashes in water from a trap dumped on me or digging a well up in freezing rain. some days im in a *spotless* mansion/house changing a water pipe.

again, the living conditions of some people would suprise you. we work for several hoarders. the tv show was suprisingly accurate. ive been in houses that didnt even have a pathway to walk. entire rooms, full of what i would refer to as trash, and the mentally stability of the people that live there relies on knowing that that trash is there, and not thrown away. i have a family member has some mental problems, and three large houses+a storage unit *full* of random shit she will never use. it really is tragic.

forgot to mention that the installation pictured here has 2 problems

one is the problem that the picture is trying to illustrate, that the dishwasher is draining to the wrong side of the trap.

but a dishwasher drain line should also run all the way to touch the bottom of the countertop, and then down to the sink drain. this prevents water from flowing backwards through the dishwasher drain, in the event of a clogged drain.

Not a plumber but: Lye will definitely eat away at hair clogs, it's what I use on my shower drain. Dunno about the other drain chemicals you can get—lye is the boss though, and cheap. But like OP says if lye doesn't finish the job you now have two problems, a clogged drain filled with flesh-eating caustic soup. Lesson is, use the cleaner while the drain's still "slow", not "clogged", so that if it doesn't work you can slowly rinse it out and try something else (mechanical).

From the chemistry of it lye ought to work well on fat clogs (kitchen sink), but I've always had most success with hot-water-and-a-snake on those. In theory lye shouldn't harm iron or PVC pipes but who knows what's down there.

chlorine is removed by contact with air.

uv light will only kill bacteria, and with that much chlorine, you don't need that. make sure the aerators on your facets are mixing plenty of air in the water. you can let drinking water sit in the sun or use a brita filter or filter pitcher. reverse osmosis filters will give you the best results but they can be pricey to buy/ maintain, and they wont do your whole house. r/o can produce only several gallons of absolutely pure water per day. it may be worthwhile to petition your local government to lower the chlorine levels if it is unnecessary.

I have several rental units and am forever replacing water heaters.

yes there is an anode rod that is attached to a plug in the top of the water heater. it really shouldnt need replaced though.i suggest Rheem water heaters. especially if they are gas. dont buy water heaters at lowes. those whirlpool heaters are terrible

Would you recommend it as a work? I'm working tech support for a bank, earning relatively well, about 150-180% of the average pay in Hungary at the age of 27. However, I'd much like to get into more handy crafts, which give me way more satisfation, such as repairing electronics, something I already do for friends and family. Now I do wonder how much you work a week and how much you earn relative to others in your social strata and age. Pay is crucial, as I am the only earning person in our family of two currently. Also, the knowledge that your craft will be needed at all times at a steady rate, instead of spikes in the income.

Also, we had a blocking 3 weeks ago that I fixed using something similar instead of calling a plumber to do the dirty work. Gotta work out something for the doorknobs next week.

i would definetly recommend it, and if you have a little know-how on running a business, definetly go the self employed route as an LLC. you may want to start out working for a big company, to get training and liscensing and all that, though. self employment is the highest paying route for plumbing. its also the most work, and it depends greatly on your area and how hard you want to work.

100k per year isn't out of the question if you work hard enough and have a customer base. im actually only 20 and i make roughly 20k per year, but i get some very nice perks since its a family owned business. mom and dad will go on vacation for a week and leave me that weeks pay for looking after the house.

My toilet clogged on fuck all. I've tried plunging and using the auger, it didn't work. The auger went in all the way but isn't running into anything. Flushing only brings whatever was in the toilet up into the shower.

Is there anything else I can do short of uprooting the toilet or calling a plumber?

accidentally garbage disposaled a shot glass. fuck me, right? turned it off and pulled shot glass pieces out. at first, the garbage disposal only made a humming sound. now it doesn't do anything. protips? tried unplugging and plugging back in. tried pressing the red button on the bottom (couldn't resist pressing the red button) but nothing is fixing it.

>the garbage disposal only made a humming sound

Something was jamming the motor so it wouldn't turn.

>now it doesn't do anything

You let is sit too long and hum and it may have either tripped a thermal switch on the motor or burned out. Check under the sink on the motor assembly for a reset button to press. Make sure you find whatever it is that is wedging the motor and keeping it from moving BEFORE turning it back on. Otherwise, replace the motor.

>> No.360020

take you a plunger upside down and stick the wooden handle into the disposal, turn it counter clockwise without putting pressure downwards, your trying to spin the blade, not break the disposal off of the sink, youll feel it break free, turn it on, it will run, if anything put like ice in it so it will wask the broken glass down also

well i pulled out the glass pieces but maybe some got jammed somewhere i couldn't see. looked again and don't see anything else in there. think theres a hidden crevice it could have gotten into? only reset buttpon i saw was the red one, but it didn't seem to do anything when i pressed it in. think i may have burned out the motor :/

>> No.360024

or use the alan wrench that is normally sent with the disposal , insert down by the red button, tease it both ways but it will break free, then ice or lots of water and let it run

If it is burned out then there is a hopeful chance that there's a start/run capacitor inside OR on the outside the motor assembly. You may be able to simply open the motor up and replace the capacitor. During that time you may be able to find something else that may have been jamming it. If the motor is a sealed unit and contains mineral oil, you may need to toss that out and put in new before closing it up. dump the mineral oil into a container so you can measure it and know the amount needed to replace it. If the capacitor burned up inside the motor in the oil the oil will smell SICKENING. Don't breath the oil fumes and to it this in a ventilated area or outside as it can really be nasty and make you physically ill from a few breaths. Alternatively, you may have a motor repair shop in your area you can take it to if the price is cheaper than buying a new one.

We've got a 'little' problem with a blocked pipe.

It's the pipe on that drains the dishwasher and the washing mashine and it's connected with the kitchen sink. Lately water starts rising in the sink when using the dishwasher.

We've used some products initially (can't remember the names) opened up the pipes under the sink to clean them, used a plunger and started using boiling water and baking soda with vinegar.

It all offers temporary relief and when using baking soda with vinigar you can hear the sink going 'glug glug glug' for a while. But after laundry day the trouble starts again. I think the problem is underground but we don't know how to get there.

Is there something else we can do? Or is it time to call the plumber / landlord? We've only been renting this house since september 2011, so i'm not sure if it's our fault or something the previous tenant could have done. How fast do clots form?

call your landlord.
if hes a good landlord, he will be glad you called him instead of fixing it yourself. my family rents houses and its a huge pain when a tenant takes a small problem and makes it worse.
