man, when I was a kid I used to go dumpster diving with this other kid that nobody else liked because he pissed his pants all the time and had to wear diapers to school, and we'd pick up electronics and take them home and they always worked, and said he wanted to take them apart and mess with the parts but we were only like ten years old and I told him it was impossible. But now I like to mess around with electronics and I would have had a lot of good shit from that but I threw it all away because it took up too much space. Oh yeah and later that kid turned out to be gay and he also had the biggest jew nose I think I've ever seen in my life.

I live in a fairly rural area where everybody brings their shit to a waste collection facility (the dump) and they truck off the trash. At the dropoff dock people will leave stuff that maybe somebody could do something with, but they don't want. I've found a bunch of stuff there.

Best find: two 12" AC/DC CRT TV/VCRs, the kind that they put in vans before LCDs were common. Remotes & power cords included. One had no sound, so I took it apart & all that was wrong was the speaker wire had wiggled loose. The other had a tape stuck in it. Easy fix, plus the tape was a kids movie that my little sister wanted.

When I lived in Manhattan I furnished the apartment by dumpster diving. Keep an eye on large schools and commercial buildings, they throw out a lot of perfectly good stuff. Most big apartment basements also have an area near the garbage for larger items, and sometimes an area to put items that you don't want but are still good.

One time while I was visiting a friend in Vegas we hit this really rich neighborhood the night before trash day. Lots of good, new, still packaged items. Got a nice laptop case that night. You would be amazed the things people just throw out.

The biggest piece of advice I could give, other than always have a buddy with you, is to just act natural about it. If you are acting like it's normal that you are there most people won't even take notice of you.

I began to go dumbster diving at the beginning of the summer with my friends.

as i said earlier on this thread there was two dumps. Both closed at aproximately 18h. So at 18h when they closed the portals. We jumped in the dump and looked for stuffs like if we were looking for treasures. We even have been friend with the guardian. He let us dumpster diving as long as we don't take their copper and other materials.

The boss and apparely all the employees know that we use to go dumpster diving in their dump. So everything is fine we are not so afraid to get caught by the guardian because he is our friend (he lives in a house in front of the dump).

We used to go there early. Chilling in our hut, there were a lot of fruit trees like blackberries, plums, apples and even mint (we made tea with it). we made a garden.

So we used to have fun all the day then at 18 hour we went dumpster diving, and when we finished we stayed in our hut until one or three am. And we even used to bring our food. like eggs, fish sticks, steacks, beverage we made a fire camp everynight to stay warm and to cook our food. Yeah it was a good life. Now we are not so happy to go there. Some weird man stay in our hut i don't know doing what. Maybe doing drug, being drunk... And it's soon the winter, the night fall early and it's not even 18h it's not fun dumpster diving in the dark.

Alright, noob with a question here.
Let's say you were scouting out a new town for possible 'diving spots.
What do you look for, what do you keep in mind, what do you stay away from, and what do you need to know?
I'd imagine that it would be useful to know when trash pickup is, and if you're 'diving a retail store's dumpster, when they close.
How does one find out these things, other than to stakeout the place and wait?

I used to go dumpster diving almost every night in college. My roommate and I dived and sold on eBay enough crap to pay for a Spring Break trip to Vegas in less than a year.

One night we found two big black trash bags behind a Sprint store. We threw both in the car. Back at the dorm, we started going through them. They were filled with cellphone boxes. Almost all just had a manual and charger (which we resold). In the bottom of the second bag, I pulled out a box that felt heavy. It contained a Treo 600 smartphone (which was Sprint's high-end phone at the time, $400ish). Despite the repair tag on it, it worked fine for me for 2+ years before I upgraded.

Another favorite find was a large (~24x36) wall mirror, complete with antique looking frame that I pulled from a home furnishings store dumpster. On the back was still the price tag for around $150.

When it comes to dumpster diving, really good finds like the ones in my other post are the exception, not the rule. There were a lot of nights we'd drive around for a couple of hours and not find anything at all. Most nights, we'd only bring in a few bucks worth of stuff. Very rarely, like once every month or two, we'd get lucky and find something really cool or expensive.

As to finding good dumpsters, there's two main strategies. First is to just canvas the area you're in. If you're in a decent sized city, there's probably plenty of different stores around you. After you've dived each remotely interesting place a time or two, you'll get a feel for the ones that are worth coming back to on a regular basis. Some stores have predictable patterns. We learned that a certain drug store would always throw out their old holiday merchandise, so after Halloween, Christmas, Easter, etc., we were assured at least some of the candy and decorations of the season.

Another way to find interesting stuff is to keep an eye out for the large roll-off dumpsters like in OP's pic. They usually signify that a company is renovating or moving, and is likely throwing out some worthwhile items. We scored old laptops, PDAs, and an almost complete business-band radio system this way.

>> No.34888

A note of advice to anyone worried about being caught - Boxes. If anyone questions what you are doing, just say you're moving and are looking for boxes. Cops have stopped me a few times in dumpster diving, and that excuse worked every time.

My father and I used to dive back in the 90s.

Go out in a pickup truck on trash day.

Things we looked for:bikes, lawnmowers (surprisingly always a few), PVC tubes, stereos, powertools, furniture, anything that could be fixed.

Most of the mowers just needed a minor tune-up. Otherwise, they were stripped for parts and rebuilt. Run the blades along a grinder and top off the gas tank...BAM easy $20 bucks.

Furniture was stripped, cleaned, and re-upholstered. Couches, chairs, whatever. Could make 40-50 bucks there.

We'd hold a once a month yard sale and sell the stuff. It'd be nothing to have 10 mowers, a couch or 2, and chairs, along with the stereos and speakers set out. Easy 400 to 600 bucks. For a little digging and tinkering every night.

i'm not sure about trash being public property, but 7/10 times dumpers are in places labeled "no trespassing." the only times i've ever gotten approached by police they told me about the sign and politely asked me to leave.
if you don't look like an absolute creep, cops will usually understand that you're not out to hurt anyone or break any serious laws. unless you live in a small town with nothing going on, cops have more important things to do than fill out a whole report over someone simply sifting though trash.

that said, if they do ask you to leave, don't come back. they'll feel disrespected and that need to prove their authority will flare up and you'll have a $50+ trespassing ticket to deal with.

Yeah, they floorload a lot of their shit, then bundle it into the trailer with two nylon heat bonded straps, and a few sheets of cardboard. After pulling it a few hundred miles in the back of a 53' trailer, stuff is literally falling off the truck when you open the door. They usually just scan it and trash it if its an electrical item, but anything else, they'll check it for damage, then throw it out or keep it at their discretion.

A lot of the security cameras are actually dummies outside of high crime areas. Keep in mind they often have 3rd shift accept deliveries from 10pm to roughly 1am in addition to drop and hook shipments throughout the day. 2am-5am is probably your best timeframe. Trash trucks will likely come very soon after that window.

I enjoy diving myself. My main preference are the dumpsters the banks get to load up after evicting tenants. I find all kinds of shit. Found some jewelry, random tech, but the grail, a NIB unopened Famicom. That bitch is still in a lock box.

The next kind I just LOVE and those behind stores. CVS usually throws out the good stuff often, but the big box store always have guards or are locked up tighter then a virgin pussy around here.

Last year, a lot of my Christmas gifts were from a dumpster. Each of my three nieces got those children's digital cameras that can take one hell of a beating. My youngest one got some walking poodle thing, the middle got a toy ATM, and the oldest also got a $25 gift card. That's the funny thing about CVS, they rarely, if ever, fully deactivate the gift cards. Best one I pulled was a $500 one. Didn't think it was worth so much until I checked it.

Great shit. I go back once a month, second tuesday night is when they usually throw out the more expensive discardable inventory.

Born in the Oak Ridge TN area, near the plants that made the first A-Bomb. Way back in the 1970's, a bunch of us once dumpster dived (off the DOE reservation) for a collection of curved ended pieces of what turned out to be rigid "carbon-titanide-some odder metals" foam. Each of these pieces was of square cross section bar about 6" thick, and had various holes drilled through it, weighed a few ounces, and was about sledge hammer proof. Turned out you stacked all them right, put some cross braces on them and bolted through the holes and they made a four foot, disc shaped flywheel core. It had a couple of little chips in it and so wasn't balanced above 35,000 RPM anymore.
A cop caught us digging this stuff out, and made us wait until he dug up a Geiger counter, but let us keep it after it checked out. Oak Ridge was like growing up in real life Eureka.

Got for free from people: (All stuff working) Two Dell AXIMs, Netbook with a dead screen, HP Core2Duo 1.8Ghz with 23in widescreen, 4GB DDR3 for my laptop (total at 6GB now), Palm T3, 5.1 Surround Sound, AM/FM Tuner, Computers ranging from 300MHz to 2.8GHz, Desk, TVs, radios, and tons of other crap.

Here is a tip. Find any electronics from dumpster diving, if Wal*Mart sells it, take what you found and get a new one. Had a friend that found a LCD TV, he took it to walmart and got a new one of the same model. But walmart will only let you take stuff back with out the receipts a limited amount of time. I think it's like 3 times.

Ah, so basically dumpster diving isn't illegal, but you could get in trouble for the trespassing part of it?
Gotcha.

>> No.41263

With the question of legality, I think I should make a few points.

Look for a no trespassing sign. If you see one, dive at your own risk. If there isn't you probably won't have many problems at all diving the area.

If it's locked, don't try to force yourself in.

If you find anything significantly illegal that you touched, report it to the police quickly. Last thing you need is to touch it and the police find it later one, find your prints, and you'll be fucked.

Now, time for some courtesy:

When diving, don't fling items everywhere and make a big mess. Not cool.

If you take something out, then decide you don't want it, put it back in the dumpster. Don't leave it out. Also, if you can do it safely, clean up the area a little bit. Not much, if there's a few boxes on the side, toss them in, unless they are in a recycling drop.

If applicable, close the lids. Simple enough.

I was busted once as I was cleaning up the area and closing the lids by a couple cops. Of course this was in a "No Trespassing" area. They came up to me and asked me what I was doing. I told them, "I was dumpster diving. I made a bit of a mess and I'm cleaning it up." They told me no problem and to be out in 5 minutes. No tickets, fines, or anything of the sort. I guess they didn't want to clean it up themselves. lol

If you follow these simple rules, most places won't care too much. It show's the store respect. And by doing that, you might get lucky enough to have a store manager like you enough to let you know when good stuff is being tossed. I get a call like that twice a month.

I'm not sure how it works with other stores, but I have a friend who works at a big name furniture n' office supply store; anything that doesn't sell, display pieces, anything they can't give away or do with, they destroy.
If they have a display chair, shelf, desk that's practically brand new, but don't want to use anymore they will take a knife, hammer, crowbar and destroy it before throwing it away.
Hammer up tables, break program disks, smash printers.
My friend said he nearly cried when he had to tear up a BRAND NEW high-priced leather office chair because the store didn't want to carry it anymore. Apparently this sort of thing happens in a lot of different stores. Damn waste.

Here you can see the blue jets of flame more clearly. Putting the pan down too suddenly ontop the main flame in the centre would extinguish the fire. It was a bit tricky, but not impossible, because once the alchol began to heat up from the main fire, it started turning into gas quicker, making the whole stove so easy to light that one simply had to take a lighter to the side of the can and the whole thing would light up again in a puff of flame.

Very easy to spill the fuel and make splashfires as well. Delicate work. But so rewarding when you figure it out.

Not necessarily related to Urban Outfitters, but when restaurants get rid old pieces when remodeling they might hire an auctioneer to sell the furniture for them. I work at an auction field and we've gotten table sets from restaurants and other random things like hair salon equipment. Even though they're being sold instead of getting thrown out they go for pretty cheap. Plus larger pieces of furniture don't sell sometimes (because people can't fit the stuff into their cars or there's a piece missing) and there's always people that walk around and pick up everything that doesn't sell.

Haha, wtf are you doing son? Wat are you looking for? Ive never seen a recycling dump being guarded by securitas, or anyone else for that matter. Also; remember that if you climb over a fence/sneak through a hole/pick a lock, you're comitting a crime = the guard can hold you until police comes.

no, never.
I was seen once by a passing car, but he didnt care.

I'm usually out in the middle of the night (between 23:00-02:00) to avoid curious on-lookers. And I'm beaing sneaky as fuck.

After reading this entire thread, I'm becoming interested in this activity.
Do you search around in apartment dumpsters or just stores?

>> No.44540

only stores. that way I know what I get is (relatively) clean and safe. No-one has tampered with it or thrown out needles in the dumpster.

The hard thing is to learn what stores are good. Too big of a store: they have manglers to compact their waste. To small of a store: no trash.

When I get out there I wear dark clothes and thick skin-gloves (from cow-hide) and a small flashlight. A small knife isnt bad either, to cut open bags.

Remember: dont make a mess, or they'll probably lock up their stash.

I never have! I live in a relative small town, so I dont know if theres anyone else doing it.

The best thing must've been... hm.. either the 20kg(20lbs) of candy in mint condition, or the first time I was out looting; cookies, bread, fruit, dessert and more bread. Got a pic of it, since it was my first time.

yep, it was.
most of the things they throw away either passed expiration date by a day, or will in a few days.
I avoid things that dont have a wrapper (i.e. bare fruit or bare bread) and things that go bad from warmth (i.e. meat, fish, eggs, dairy-products).

Good hunting, mate!

I have found over the years
-a snowblower with a working engine i salvaged
-a working mini fridge
-a gas grill that just needed a new starter
-computer case

all put to good use for many years, still have the snowblower engine, which i put into a go-kart as a replacement engine since the last one blew out
