So /diy/ers I'm going to be homeless for a bit.

little bit of info.

>almost broke. ($10 in my account)

>I have two jobs but will not get paid until late next week if not the week after. (maybe)

>One job is temporary and will be ending soon, the other job doesn't give regular hours and pay is infrequent.

>Do not have a drivers license or a car to sleep in.

>No family or friends in the area to help with funds, housing, etc.

>Already went to the local homeless shelter. Got rape eyes from everyone in there and didn't feel safe in the slightest.

Now /diy/ I have no problem walking from place to place. I just need to be able to sleep.

Things I have done

-Signed up on Couchsurfing (couldn't pay the fucking $25 verification fee though)

-Looking for other work (online and in person, handing applications only to managers when possible)

Any other tips /diy/?

Also, I am using public wifi on a laptop that is old.

OP, steel yourself. There's no need to feel bad. It's what you have to do. When you're broke and homeless, taking a shower with restroom soap and a discarded half-full water bottle is ingenuity. You have to survive. If you're prepared mentally to survive, you won't need a board to tell you what to do.

That being said, squat abandoned houses and ALWAYS look for the absolute cheapest way to do anything. For $5 I can get 7.5 pounds of beans in syrup at my supermarket, and I'm sure there are much better deals. Ethnic/farmer's/flea markets are great places for the extremely low-bugeted. If you see something in the trash take it. Anything you could use or pawn or even eat. I suggest carrying a legal-length knife for self-defense, since you might come to such a situation.

Have you considered getting arrested on purpose?

Rob a bank with a piece of paper stating you have a deadly weapon. If you get away with the cash, you have a chunk of cash to get started in the next chapter of your life, if you get nabbed by the pigs, you've got a place to stay during the next chapter of your life.

>> No.336864

For shelter, I would recommend squatting above all else. Yes it's dangerous, but if you really can't spare money for a tent it's your best bet for dealing with the weather conditions. If nosy neighbors are a concern, just leave extremely early.

You'll want to spend the bulk of the day that you aren't hitting the pavement for a job at the library. It's free, it's heated, and you can learn a thing or two during down time from filling out applications.

Soup kitchens are where you will be eating. Get there early. Once the food is gone, it's gone.

Hygiene is still important, even as a homeless person if you want to land a job. For showers, go to a local college with a basketball court for open use. It's free and no one really questions any one. In fact, even if you're dingy they'll probably think you're going for a hipster look.

Good luck to you.

This is actually pretty common in Norway.

Not something like robbing a bank, but doing petty crimes that doesn't hurt anyone physically just to get arrested in order to survive the winter.

My grandfather was the chief of police in our district, and dealt a lot with these people. He had no problem helping them get back on their feet after they got out, and welcomed them back with open arms afterwards.

A large group of them even came to his funeral when he died to pay their respects.

Charity is almost a duty with the latter two so you might get more help from them. A priest / imam / rabbi might be able to find you better work too remember they have connections.

No salvation army? Also what's the welfare situation in US, no office where you can speak to and explain your situation?

This.

If I were in your situation I would be doing the following:
>Maintain those jobs you have and look for more work, be willing to take hard as fuck work and work intense hours
>Get a PO box (which you already have, nice!)
>Buy a $30 tent from BigW/Kmart and camp out of town

Once some more money starts flowing:
>Buy a bike (or I guess if you live in the US, a very cheap old car)
>Get a gym membership

Other options:
>Get a $3 tarp from bunnings or somewhere similar, use this to capture water and shower
>Make sure you stay reasonably clean and not stinky or you wont get hired
>Use public toilets to shave in, etc.

I know it can be hard camping in town, but if you live in a country town surely there'll be a park near the edge of town somewhere that would have public toilets and maybe even a nice bench to eat at in the morning. Then you can camp just on the outskirts or somewhere reasonably hidden. Consider getting a green tent so you can blend in a little easier to avoid harassment.

Does your country have social security/food stamps? Get into that as well.
Do you have any talents? Drawing, painting, music etc?

It's such bullshit.
Everything that can be salvaged or is still good to be consumed by others should be donated. Period.

But no, theres all this bullshit out there where you have to feel bad and donate money to save the homeless, and all the while good food and clothing is getting destroyed so that someone doesn't take it when its headed for the land fill.
I know companies need to protect their capital.. but god.. It just seems so bass ackwards to me.
I understand not all of it can be donated, sure, but theres a whole heck of a lot that can.
But don't worry - it should rest on my shoulders. I am the only one who can help the homeless. Not the multi-million, or billion dollar companies. No sirree!

Is it safer to hang out at 24 hr places during the night, and sleep in the day just in a park or something?
That's what I'd do if I was in your situation. Of course, this cycle might disrupt work.
You say you have a job? For god's sake do not lose this job. And what the hell, you may as well lower your standards and try get a job at subway or a fast food place or something... Until you get enough money to get your own place. Working the graveyard shift may help eliminate the necessity to find somewhere safe to sleep for the evening.

Also, the library is probably a good place to hang around. Some gyms, colleges, hospitals etc. have showers I s'pose that you could probably hit once or twice or more with a fair while in between if you just walk around pretending like you're supposed to be there.
The worst part, I imagine, would be being looked at like you're someone to be avoided. That's why personally I'd place personal hygiene/grooming high up on the list. And a job...
But then again, I'm not homeless now and I barely do those things.

this. Winter is coming so you're going to want to head as south as possible. I was homeless for a while and I can tell you its an awful lot more fun to be homeless and on the move (hitch hiking = more fun than you can possibly imagine) than it is to be homeless and trying to scratch out a life in one place. Train hopping and hitch hiking will put you in contact with other folks living the nomadic lifestyle, they're generally pretty happy go-lucky, care-free individuals who'll be more than pleased to help you out and teach you the ins-and-outs that can make homelessness an awful lot of fun.

a few tips:
- Dumpster dive. You'd be amazed what sort of useful things you find. An awful lot of camping gear can be improvised from shit you find in the dumpster if you're resourceful. Also, food. Food is important.
- Carry weed and be willing to share it with total strangers. There are many times I've landed in a strange city not knowing anybody and made a whole mess of friends within a couple hours just because I was willing to smoke up a couple folks.
- Learn to play an instrument, small portable ones are the best. I could sometimes make $20 in half an hour playing harmonica outside a liquor store. Busking is also a great way to meet people when you land in a new town.
- Get good at shop lifting but don't steal from individuals.
- Keep your ears open for opportunity. I've been offered jobs plenty of times while out hitch hiking. You also never know when you might be able to score a really really good weed connect and make some money that way.

I was homeless for a little while. It sucked a lot. It was scary and people look at you less than human just cause hard times. Anyway I would go to the library and tilt my hat down pretend i was reading to take naps. Sleeping in the woods is fucked unless you like a large variety of nasty spiders in your sleep. I would find a concrete slab that was out of plane view and sleep there or a tennis court at a junior high or some school. Its clean and far from bugs n shit, let the sun wake you and get the fuck outta there. A backpack full of hearty granola and cheese sticks was cheap and more importantly very portable. That is important, all you need you must have with you. I had a bike rode around for several hours a day sometimes. It sucked and i never want it to happen again, get a job asap and get back to a sane fucking life. People who enjoy that sort of thing have very low standards and are most likely fucked in the head to some extent. grit your teeth and claw your way back, fast.

Been in your place before, OP, I know how it is. If you can help it, do NOT lose that second job. Small-ass income is better than $0 income. If you live in a large city, try to find a Shelter run by a Church Group. I spent some time on the streets of ATL, and the Private/Church-run Shelters are much better than the City/State-run ones, you'll likely have to contribute Volunteer Time for your upkeep, but in the winter, beats decking it under a bridge in below-freezing weather. If you keep relatively shaved (Some stubble is ok, neckbeard quantity is not) and have clothes that fit the 20's-30's age group, try hanging around the University Districts. Pigs are less likely to hassle you, and there's always the opportunity to grab a Leftover Lunch from the various outdoor cafe's and to keep your ears open for work opportunities. Sign up at the local library. The Internet Usage there can be a lifeline like a motherfucker. Allows you to keep contact with your online bro's, as well as family/friends who you can ask to keep an eye out for work opportunities. Keep an open mind, OP, you are about to join the ranks of the Alley-Dwellers. Find a couple of likeminded individuals in your same situation, and group up. Safety in numbers, even in that situation, but keep your eye on them for the first few weeks. Things are rough for them. I would think in PA however the people in the homeless shelters may have a little more going for them i would ask around about safety and not carry any valuables. you could ask someone you think you can trust to keep your lap top for you maybee a librarian or go to the police station and see if they can keep it for you they have lockers for things like firearms storage i know. Follow the oil boom, OP. There is a severe shortage of ALL types of workers in oil boom areas, like North Dakota and Midland, TX. I heard that entry level workers at Subway are making $19/hr. You probably won't be able to find housing, but if you get work within the oil industry proper, there may be worker housing for you.

I've been homeless before, but had a car to live in and friends I could stay with some of the time.

Going from one shit temp job to another isn't going to help you out the hole you're in.

I've worked a good number of temp jobs before. The temp/day-labor agencies will blackball you really easily if you either fuck anything up or don't want to come back to the worst shit jobs they give you. But if you just need to some cash that day, temp work is an option.

My advice would be to seek better employment. Specifically get into a trade if you can. Contact your local union halls, plumbers, pipe fitters, electricians, heating and air HVAC work, etc., and ask about openings. Also call local companies that do that and ask about openings. You might be able to land a job as a helper and work your way up into a decent paying job eventually.

Sign for both owner (fake sig) and your sig as tenant.
Keep lease handy.
If/when someone shows up saying it is bank owned/police show up/etc, show the lease and say you're paying $x per month and spent your whole savings for the deposit.

Will elaborate more on this - was in a rush on my phone earlier.

>Find a vacant house, preferably one owned by a bank. (Let's say 123 Main St)
>Find generic lease, use 123 Main St Yourcity, ST 00000 as address. Put the agreement is between <your_name> and <fake_company_name_LLC> (make it a company name so it's more believable and easier to play the victim) for $X per month and an $Y security deposit.
>Print lease and sign your name as tenant, and have a fakey signature above the LLC signature line.
>Say you met with some man at the house and you gave him your $Y security deposit in cash and moved in.
>Tell them it's your first month living at the house and you haven't actually paid a monthly rent yet, so you're not sure how it's collected (i.e. not sure if man will come back and get rent, if you're supposed to mail, etc.)
>Bonus points: demand a relocation fee (usually called Cash For Keys from the bank). The bank, usually mandated by the government, will pay any occupant $Z amount of monies to move out of the house and leave it in "broom swept condition".
>Again, get out when you are told and don't make a hassle of it, because they will start to dig deeper.

Tips:
>Find out which houses are vacant by your local county property search website (google: <your_county> property search). Generally you can search by owner name. Try "Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA), Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (FHLMC), Bank of America, N.A, etc." Usually the government run entities will increase your chance of the CFK incentive.
>Scout out the properties. Steer clear of the houses that have real estate For Sale signs, or ones that have pieces of paper in the window that say "This property is being maintained by Cyprexx/Safeguard/etc." This means someone is routinely at the property inspecting it/cutting the grass/etc and will likely find you out (which isn't a huge issue, since we have you covered above, but ones without signs should let you stay longer)
>You can use houses that aren't currently bank owned according to the property appraiser website, but I would scout it first and make sure it's completely empty. Usually, people will receive a letter saying the foreclosure process is started, and will move out immediately, even though it won't be months, or possibly years, before the house actually gets foreclosed. This is the opportune time to live in it because generally, the homeowner is gone and the bank won't be taking it back for quite some time. These may just be more difficult to find.

Also this. I constantly read stories about farmers in the warmer latittudes that bitch about not being able to find workers.

Their code is they can't find cheap disposable Mexican labor they can pay less than minimum wage to and treat like shit, expose to toxic chemicals and treat like shit and pay or not pay depending upon the mood of their lord and master.

Look when I was growing up ag work was the eight ball in the corner pocket that kept the country humming along.

If you ever needed money you went to a farm and applied for a low wage job which would keep you above water until you could move along to something better.

Then they dropped the flood gates for illegal immigration and the country went to shit.

There as of late and rightuflly so been a lot of crackdowns on illegal labor. It only makes sense in a country with such high unemployment.

Find some of these big farms and ask for a job. If they refuse to hire an English speaker call immigration and OSHA. I did a small job at a condo complex recently and all the illegals were acting like dicks to me.

One phone call and three days latter they were all gone.

Think about it anon.

You think that a homeowner who comes home to an empty house and sees a trespasser is going to be docile?
Squatting isnt well known here in the US, he would probably think you are a drug fiend using the property as a crack house or meth lab or somesuch.

There is no trust between the homeowner and a homeless trespasser.
Want to have a friendly conversation to explain the situation of why you think you can use loopholes to fuck with someone elses property?

If they are reasonable they will keep the trespasser under gunpoint till the police come, but the police are only good for filling out paperwork after a crime has been committed.

Reading this thread gave me exactly what I needed, confidence in my actions.

I was thinking about relocating to a different town in California as I do not have any family here, no reason to stay. But why? I do not posess any trades or skills above entry level positions...seems like I would be just running away to a different town only to find myself in the sane circumstances if not worse.

I have few paychecks saved up, enough to cover about month of rent. I see this as an unviable choice now even as I am so tempted to rest my head in a warm home. I would pretty much give myself a 1 month deadline to find a job and if I didn't all of my savings would be gone and again I would be where I am now but wven more depressed if not an heroed.

I got myself a gym membership, ebt card, and I work at an outdoors store which I get huge discount in. The most rational coarse of action would be to remain living in my vehicle.
I needed to share this with you guys, now I am completely certain I can do this. There shouls be a lot less lows in my day now that I have a solid battle plan ready to be executed in the upmost fassion.

I can say that after being homeless for quite a few years in both PA and FL that survival is a matter of willpower on the streets.

You need willpower to wake up, to find food, etc.

Food pantries are good, but if you're homeless you can't cook easily.

Finding a place to sleep is hard, libraries have guards that will wake you up. Find a college or university near you. You can usually always sleep in the student union/activities building undisturbed during normal school hours (if the school has hours. If it's "open" 24 hours, you're even better off)

When I was homeless in Pittsburgh, I slept in the Library of the University of Pittsburgh and in various buildings around CMU. It also helped that I was of college age and that I was quite savvy with computers and skilled in chemistry. So, I was able, after a little legwork, to find a job at CMU and get faculty to support me all while I was not enrolled there. It got me off the streets, in fact that time.

The second time I was homeless, I was in Florida. The situation was very unlike it was in PA. In PA, the homeless stays well under the radar. In FL. The homeless is everywhere. Up in your grill, asking you for change at the ATM, begging for a bite of your hotdog, etc.

But, in FL, there was A LOT of support for homeless. Food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, etc. Also, it wasn't so bad sleeping under the stars in a tropical environment. Rain was an issue, however. Most of the storms here were not little ones.. And getting everything wet was a constant hassle.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that there's a lot of "guides" out there. But, ultimately it is up to your own desire to live and your own willpower to help you survive. You need to be creative, strong, resourceful and above all... Hopeful.

Do not let yourself fall into the spiral of self-destruction I've seen many of my fellow homeless fall into. Keep working forward toward a realistic goal.

Heh, I'm at CMU right now. I can confirm that people sleep on campus all the time. There's even a nap pod in the library (pic related). Also, CMU has a half dozen or so showers scattered across campus that are usually open 24hrs. I think a lot of schools lock up at night (CMU does), but there's usually a few open doors to every building if you look carefully enough, and a few classrooms left unlocked in every building. Most universities are probably similar, except the ones in bad neighborhoods (like USC).

Also holiday season is coming up. Apply for seasonal jobs at distribution centers. Target, Walmart, Best Buy, etc.

Also go to Sheetz. At night one or two cops usually hang out there. I got caught for curfew once when I was 17 when my parents kicked me out and they bought me stuff to eat and the guy drive me 2 hours to my uncle after he was off duty. 4 years later that guy turns out to be my brothers new gf's brother. Also look for bathrooms with ceiling tiles, go up in there and check around, sometimes you get lucky and can drop in on a place that decent for sleeping. Also sometimes you can sleep in the actual ceiling if there is a small spot for you to lay your sleeping bag. Bonus you can keep from looking homeless by grooming in the restroom.
