Hey /diy/, I'm having trouble finding a project to work on.

Ever since I came here, an urge has come up for me to start working on something and take up a hobby, but I don't know what. Growing shit, metalwork, and electronic seem cool, but I can't find shit to work on! Any useful, beginner gadgets I can work on?

Pic unrelated.

Modifying nerfguns has a low learning curve, and plenty of room for expansion. And hell, who wouldnt mind having some nerf guns around from time to time.
Check out nerfhaven.com if you're interested.

I don't really think that's in my field, I'm more looking towards some useful little tools, or personal modifications of current tools. Like making a USB charger that looks like a Steampunk era engine.

Consider woodworking. It is a dying art, and you can build stuff you can then take pleasure and price in daily use, like furniture. It's always kinda nice to sit in a comfortable chair and say: "I made this. Before me this was just a stack of boards that came from a tree, and I have made something that gives me or someone else pleasure every day."

It's something tangible you can look at and hold and take pride in.

Problem is, I don't know where to start. How do I take a normal charger apart, where to connect the wires, and how to put it back together?

I was also looking into this, my father is great at woodworking so I can talk to him about it.

As soon as I get about 50 bucks together I'm going to experiment growing some plants in my closet with red and blue lights. I heard that blue lights are great for imitating Spring light and facilitating the growth of plant sprouts, and the red light is great for emulating Summer light. Maybe I'll grow some Strawberries. I could also experiment with miniature-scale drip irrigation with some tubing.

It's also the most accesible project. I could build some shelves, I suppose, but those are boring and pretty unsatisfying. The biggest project I want to do is build a house, but I don't have anywhere near close the funds for that.

Electronicsfag here,

I really don't like discouraging people from learning new things, but if it's anything involving house current (120 volts) I really don't recommend beginners messing with it because of the electrocution and fire hazard involved.

Come now anon, use some initiative. To take it apart you unscrew or pry apart anything that look like it hold it together. If any wires need removing, make a note of where they were originally and put them back there when you need to.

Growing plants with no soil, just water. It seems pretty easy but just requires some pipework with pumps and stuff. Check out an ebb and flow system on youtube, really cool stuff.

If you're especially not good with tools, you can also just strip the insides of a solar garden lamp!
I made one of these many years ago and did it that way.

Sounds interesting. I have a pretty big closet, so I imagine I could do that as well.

Also, the local garden center shop around here has an xbox-hueg growing center for what is obviously for growing operations. They even have cases of spray that supposedly makes the buds more potent.

Yes. That's not a good design, though. You know those solar LED lights you can get for your yard/garden? Something like this needs to work like those. They use a transistor switch to turn off the lamp/LED in the daytime, so all the current from the solar panel can go to charging the battery. Check out this page, it's got some good designs: http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/solar

Go rip the cord out of a lamp or something. Strip the ends of the wires, put them in your mouth, then plug it into the wall socket. Report back to this thread with the results.

When I was a kid, that's the only reason I ever had a TV in my room: I'd check the back porch of the local TV shop for TV's they set out there for whoever wanted them. I'd find some way to drag them home on my bicycle, tear into them, figure out what's wrong, fix it, and have a free TV in my room. Later on I even modified them to have a jack and a switch on the back to allow me to use them as a video monitor. TV's I couldn't fix became parts to fix other TV's, or parts for amateur radio projects.

>> No.29402

Really, yeah, you can. Check places like Big Lots or the dollar stores, they tend to have things like this for next to nothing. Rip the parts you want out, put them in whatever you want. Do check out that webpage, though, he's got some designs towards the bottom that will make the best use of every bit of charge in the battery.

Who said anything about the aforementioned "USB Charger" being something that runs OFF OF a USB port? Sounded to me like what was being described was a power supply designed to charge other devices via a USB connection -- which would be something AC powered.

Could be read either way.

Besides unplugging the fucking thing, which I'm sure OP has the brain cells to accomplish will render said charger, harmless.

I suggest you mind your own damn business.

There is absolutely NO excuse for running someone down for being safety-conscious, especially on a website frequented mainly by teenagers who don't know any better and are more than willing to take the advice of anonymous assholes who get their rocks off telling people to do dangerous things (i.e. mixing ammonia and bleach to make "cool looking crystals") or destroy things (delete system32). But go right ahead, keep giving me shit for it, because I'll keep on doing it where I feel it's appropriate. If someone wants to get their panties in a bunch over that, then they can take it up with their therapist.

Can't say I've ever shopped for the things, but I'd say a couple bucks apiece at a dollar/surplus store. They're cheap made-in-China sort of things. I wouldn't pay more than a few dollars apiece for them, if that helps.

>the hero /diy/ deserves but isn't ready for yet

You can step off your soap-box now, friend.

You weren't advising someone on how to protect themselves you were telling someone not to do something because they haven't been trained by a teacher how to wire a plug.

You weren't being safety conscious, if you were your opening post wouldn't have said to not do something at all, rather it would have outlined various safety measures and safe practices when dealing with mains voltages in the course of the project.

Go on thinking your superior if it makes you happy, though.

>> No.29493

Yeah I just read on the webpage you gave that the ones he used were about $3 a piece.

I got some solar powered 'toy cockroaches' that vibrate when they get enough power, (from some insanely cheap 'made in china' website) for laughs, I think I'm gonna rip one of them apart so I get a jist of what I'm dealing with it. Or possibly use them in something else.

>> No.29495

I'd suggest a few things..
Get healthy.
Get others healthy.

Grow your own food, literally dig your entire garden up and grow grow grow

(fuck the nice flowers, they're not going to get you money whereas you could sell a box of mixed veggies to your neighbours for a small sum, they're free to grow anyway!)

If you have the urge to make something..you will make something.
Don't ask others for their ideas because then you're making something someone else thought of..and after a while that gets irritating!
