As far as placement and design, what would be the best way to go about turning this into a PC case?

>> No.289919

It should be big enough for a Micro-ATX board and an ATX power supply. Lay it out how you want it.

>> No.289925

Can you even fit a graphics card in there?

>> No.289932

>>289925
They make low profile cards. OP won't be making an ultra-high end gaming rig, but if he's scavenging parts, that probably wasn't in the cards anyway.

>> No.289936

Mount the power supply on the bottom of the case. Mount the smallest motherboard you can find to the side, just above the power supply.

Put the hard drive in front of the power supply, on the floor of the case.

Use a laptop optical drive, and mount it on the side opposite the motherboard facing up, so that it can receive a disk from above when the case is open.

Thanks for the help!
I'll try out that configuration >>289936 gave when I can.
I have some spare parts laying around I could throw in there to get an idea of what it will look like.

I tried to get the biggest can I could find so it's pretty roomy in there.
Here's a shot of the inside with a dead 260 gtx at the bottom.

Keep in mind that putting electronics down there will short it. Your GPU was already dead, but for the futuretimes babe

>> No.289945

The was I was going to do it was to build a cage that houses everything and slides right out of the case. You may want to look into that.

Depending on the ammo can you want to use, you can fit a full size ATX motherboard in the thing but mATX would be a better bet.

>> No.289954

It would be far more trouble than it's worth.

Enjoy your chopped up ammo case and poor air circulation.

It's probably easier to cut out the backplane / card supports from an old ATX case, and bolt it to the inside of the box than make it yourself. You can use the brass standoffs to insulate the mobo from the box

That is true but with my set up it also was planned to be water cooled so a cage made more sense with the two radiators I had planned for.

>> No.289979

>>289972
So you'd cut the bottom out of the crate, have grills on narrow ends for the radiators to breathe, and it kind of drops down over the top. If the cables all came out at the bottom and you had a small power switch at the bottom you could have it looking really intact

I was going to cut out the sides and put in mesh and have it set up where all of the connections were on the top of the case and everything was behind a nice cover plate.

>> No.290068

Interesting, I'm doing this as well, my design by no means better, I like your idea of moving the ports, is a mini-ITX motherboard with the ports extending out the side of the box with the hinge joint, with a pico-power supply (tiny, most of the components are attached to the plug runs and off a 12V supply) and use the integrated graphics trying to mount a proper card will cause more trouble than its worth, though the slim graphics card seems feasible.

>> No.290415

I realize this is way old, but it might still be useful as a jumping off point. Although, I would try to avoid cutting out the bottom of the box like he did.

I just want to say this is a very cool idea, OP.

>> No.290440

cool idea. that would be the best lan party computer ever.

not sure if that can was used recently but you may want to try to wash the gun powder residue out first. I don't know if it will mess up comp parts but I know some metals don't react well to it.

Also they have bigger versions of those cans. 50cals boxes would definitely be big enough without having to cut on it too much.

>> No.290486

I used a 20mm ammo can and cut out the bottom, about 1cm from all sides. The bottom of the can is the back of the computer, where I have the power supply on bottom, fan facing inwards, and two 120mm fans stacked on top of it. Some 1.5" or so pipe insulation was cut in half and fills in the gap between power supply and case on all sides except bottom. i mounted the motherboard to the longest side of the case, using bolts and plastic standoffs between contact points. A 1.5" PVC pipe bolted to the opposite side with about 70-80 degrees or so cut out supports my graphics card.

That's the jist of mine. Still haven't decided what to do with the front in order to reduce dust intake.
Good luck, OP.

first you show a 30cal can and then you have a 50cal can or 20mm pick one, massive size differences

Let me just talk you through this...

A) the first pic is a stock photo, OP does not live in the matrix boot sequence
B) in the pic he does show he mentions nothing about the size
C) OP is not the only anonymous on 4chan. He is not talking to himself and GASP maybe other people in the boot sequence have done similar projects and are describing their experience.

I am praying it's some sort of language thing and you really aren't back on the crack rock
