Also, this wont work with a pistol - professional ones are designed to shoot up to 1g (maybe 1.5 if you pushed it) of weight a few hundred metres tops. Any diy grappling hook, strong enough to hold you, is likely to be very minimum 200g, so crossbow or spring launcher is best. If go with crossbow, find a local archery club, you might be able to get some carbon fibre compound limbs second hand, or if size isnt an issue, get a glass-fibre bow, if your in the UK, everywhere is trying to get rid of them as they're semi-illegal ish (not because they're deadly to other people, cos they can be dangerous if they snap on you). However these will be big, and would probably only launch said hook so far.

Another thing anon - what rope will you be using, remember that even if 1m of it is light, once you fire it, its fighting against the entire weight of the rope, any wind on the rope, friction of it uncoiling etc.

If I were you OP, I'd probably go for a piat shape/size (if you want to launch it more than 15m) if not, then crossbow.

Why /diy/ has such a hardon for this? You guys regularly escape prisons / metnal institutions or something? Not to mention that simply throwing the hook would be way more practical than hauling around a huge crossbow or something.

Not OP, but for OP I suggest 7.5mm technora rope. It's what firefighters use as a "last line" escape rope. Anything bigger than 5mm is big enough fot a human to grasp, and it's weight-rated to 4000lbs. It's just low stretch, so dead-drops are going to hurt...

Chances are, you won't make anything portable enough that will shoot the hook further than you can throw it. Especially if the hook is heavy.

If this works like I think it's going to, it seems like you could use this device for ascending AND rappeling, eliminating the need for two seperate pieces of equipment.

Well, basically its a rig that only allows the rope to pass one way through it...Ive only used one once, but you use two of them at a time....one for your feet, and one for your arms...You stand up straight and get a grip, then bring your legs up and get ahold then stand up and retreat....Its a bit of a work out but it doesnt have to be when you get the technique down....

Wow...I did not expect this kind of response.

So from the looks of it it appears that I may decide to do the crossbow style launcher as it seems like the best size vs power option and funny enough just last night I had thought of an idea for some contraption for ascension/decention.

After spending some quality time on the "slingshot channel" from youtube. I'm sure you could build a very compact rubber band powered crossbow/rifle. Instead of using bows for the power (and having it in the way) flat band rubber bands passed through a pulley or two will give you enough force. Think spear gun on steroids. Remember you can have multiple bands each one so strong it takes your whole body weight to stretch and load. A few of those in one shot could be dangerous. Good fun, good luck.

Check out "recreational tree climbing" forums. This is the kind of thing they live for and have tried it all. Giant slingshots to compressed air rockets.

Great project wait till you make it and find out how useless it really will be. Grappling hooks are great for ship to ship boarding. It will take one missed aim to see how "un-batman" trying to fish a hook out of a snagged limb/gutter/angry persons bedroom window/ etc.
