Anyone built a useful robot?

I want something similar to the Star Wards astro-mech/ utility droids.

I was thinking a full blown R2 type contraption that would follow me around and perform useful tasks.

When I say "useful" I intend to:

* Install a large deep cell battery in the lower chassis to use as a power supply. (12v, usb, variable power supply sockets and such)

* Perhaps a range of sensors to obtain weather information and maybe some other sci-fi-esk wank I'll personally have no use for like a Geiger counter.

* Stick my phone in there and just have a Bluetooth headset. Have the droid follow within range of Bluetooth or WLAN and just accept calls.

* storage - Compartments for things like: 12v soldering iron, tools, safe etc

* Perhaps a cattle prod (I don't wont children, niggers or other degenerate filth to touch it with their pathogen infested hands)

* 3g connectivity, GPS.

* Not really mandatory but perhaps some kind of waterproofing for rain.

How hard would it be to build one around a Pi and (god forbid it) an arduino?

And what am I looking at in terms of funds?

What I'm really looking for is possibly some links and personal experience.

tl;dr I want a star wars droid that's USEFUL.

And yes I have looked up various other projects on google.

Do you have experience with electronics?
Do you have experience with programing?
Have you ever built a robot?

Just have a midget in a trashcan follow you around. It'll be cheapter.

All you really want is something that can follow you around, carry some tools & a smartphone/laptop.

Step 1 - Get a big remote controlled car.

Step 2 - Enjoy.

Dat mechatronics AI.

Your gonna have to mimic the human body with a skeletal frame, muscles (Pumps/compression), and joints (Servos). You have a good start as far as the brain. A little under powered with the battery though.

All said and done your looking at a pretty hefty energy consuming device.

Hope you realize humans are the most energy efficient form's for this planet.

Like >>282908 said, you can probably hire a midget in a trashcan for less resources/energy than that robot.

i'm going for the puppet type of robot for my second try.

my first model was more of a doll like thing (looked like gyros little robot from duck tails)
but now i want to build somthing that looks good, dont know how to program but i do have a little exp with elec and wiring.

what is it you need? is this just for somthing cool or what?
just remember this, you only get out of this project what you put into it so if you put in 10 hours dont exspect much to come out of this

If you don't know how to program you're going to run into problems pretty much immediately. Lucky for you, you can put BASIC on an arduino, the learning curve of which is pretty much a flat line.

i like this kind of thing, making a robot but it work like a puppet but how do you wire things to not hurt yourself or make sure it all works?

In honor of this ridiculous thread, I will now start planning phases of building my own C3PO. I like the idea of using the false masks/skin that the make-up effect artists use also they have been used in multiple bank robbery's. How will anybody know they are a robot then? Only way to tell is to commit a crime such as assault or murder...

>pic related, the schematics I will use to connect face with emotions. For facial recognition as well as servo/pump control for facial expression.

You spend 4 years earning a bachelors degree in electrical engineering

Then if you want a complex robot you maybe spend another few years getting something in the vein of computer science
