Let's complete the trifecta with a discussion of field detective work. Above all, let's have some fun.

Cyber detection:
A small computer, such as a Raspberry PI (with a 3g adapter) or an Android Phone (possibly any smartphone, but I'm not as familiar with them as I am with the Android) could be used as a gateway to a far more powerful computer located in your home. SSH provides us a secure way of doing this. This would allow you to take quite a bit of processing power on the go with you, which will be useful for cracking into protected networks, as well as other tasks.

The raspberry PI or the Android both offer extremely customizable platforms, though the Android does come with more expense, and the extra hassle of having to root your phone to get the most functionality out of it. It also would probably require you to get another phone line, most likely prepaid as a just in case. The Raspberry has the advantage of being extremely customizable on the hardware end (at least in terms of peripherals such as screen), and flexible on power supplys. It's also more /DIY/.

As for what you want running on your backend, most likely some form of Linux. The Backtrack Distro comes with almost every tool you could want in the realm of penetration network testing, and would be a good starting point. Graphics cards are also extremely useful for wireless cracking, offering much faster results than comparable processors, so I would recommend spending more on the graphics card than the processor (an i3 is a very good processor these days anyways, and can be had relatively cheaply).

A combination blacklight/flashlight.
The flashlight has obvious uses, though some more adventurous DIYers may prefer to experiment with nightvision. The blacklight offers the ability to detect some counterfeit currency, and blood, urine and semen stains.

I'm mostly drawing a blank on forensics that you could accomplish in the field, so if anyone wants to help out, that would be great. This isn't my strong suit.

Some form of self defense may be required as well. The Armor thread has some excellent ideas, but it may be simpler to just use a taser.

Hello from the Utility Belt thread! Here are a few suggestions:

-I'd make a wrist-mounted PC from the Raspberry Pi. 4.3" widescreem composit video LCD for automobiles, mini keyboard with scratchpad mouse) either USB or bluetooth. 16GB SD card for the pi. Power supply requirements are flexible.
-VPN to home pc with raspberry pi either by hacking a bunch of networks that span over a large area or bring a prepaid, rooted smartphone with tether. Keep all bulk on home PC.
-Bring with you a mini dvd and/or a flashdrive with DSL (damn small linux) installed. Boot from disc or flashdrive to operate linux on foreign pcs, bring one or two 32GB flashdrives for data extraction.
-small fingerprint dusting kit - may not be able to take accurate fingerprint analysys but will tell you if there was a human presence in the area recently.
-UV flashlight, regular flashlight, maybe a monocular to see far. Also HD pocket camcorder and a seperate audio recorder to record evidence.

-also bring a lockpick set for "questionable investigations". Self defense will help in this area, too - as will stealth amd sneakiness.

What about the mind? How should one prepare that?

Or should I take it to /sci/?

Oh, wait, scratch that if you've ever been there.

I have serious concerns about your ability for stealth, Mr. The Bat.
Not to be rude, but you seem like you have dreams that are magnitudes greater than your skillset. I worry for your safety.

Am I the only one who thinks we should drop the pretense and just have /diy/ superhero threads properly?

We all know that's what we're talking about, anyway. Here's another one:
