My grandpa told me that during the war they had no bicycle inner tubes so he rode on hosepipe. That got me thinking; what can I put inside a bicycle tire instead of air? I hate punctures. I'm not a weight weenie so I don't care if they are heavier or roll like shit, I just need to get from a to b without being fucked by nails and glass. Any ideas? Currently thinking pipe insulation

Unless you pack it super-dense, most pipe insulation will bottom out as soon as you put all your weight + the bikes on it. At that point, your tires will perform as if they're flat. Pack it super-dense to the point where it will resist deformation, you may as well have a solid tire around your rims, which will probably roll alright but you'll feel a lot more bumps which you may be cool with but I can't imagine the bicycles stress points and joints will enjoy that.

I found this article which talks about picrel, you may be interested in it.

Yes they do. No-mor-flats or some similar name. I have put them in countless bikes for my kids. They do ride a bit rougher than an air tire, but you never have to worry about them going flat ever again.

just put a band of the thick, elastic type of double side tape between the tire and the tube.
it's basically the stuff in self sealant patches so punctures will autorepair themselves if they get to even reach pass the tape

I’ve seen expanding foam but I’m not sure how they do it. Something like you put the foam in and then quickly put the tire on the rim while it expands. I guess you could also fill an inner tube with pouring silicone.

But in all cases a solid tubes suck for taking corners, they are way more likely to bend and come off the rim when you take a tight fast corner. You could consider >>2736006 but you’ll want spring forks and tail to be comfortable or you’ll hurt your perineum every time you ride over a hump

Sealant. Put it in the tubes to seal punctures unless you are getting pinch flats but that's a mountain bike thing. You seem like some sort of europoor just trying to get to work so try sealant.

Also you can go tubeless with tubeless tires as wheels but those are expensive. In the diy sprit with double wall wheels, enough gorilla tape and psi you can make a standard double wall wheel and bead lock tire into a tubeless setup. Pour in the sealant, insert the taped up wheel then apply copious amounts of psi to get the tire to snap into the bead. Once seated and sealed you can run crazy low psi and yeet the bike over rocks and shut without worry of pinch flats. You will have to do it once a year. The sealant has a life span then it separates.

>they use foam-filled tires on heavy equipment,
It's not foam-in-a-can. They use a two-part foam that will cure in a sealed vessel.
The two chemicals are mixed as it's being injected into the tire.
Canned window and door or similar foam will never set completely inside the tire.
Also, it cures hard so when it's compressed it stays compressed.
The commercial two-part foam is still resilient so when compressed and then released it springs back.

>quickly put the tire while the foam expand
Seems extremely messy. I would guess instead that they stick a long flexible tube through the valve stem hole and they pull back while injecting the foam, so it is evenly spread along the tire. It sounds like a very bad idea though because this foam is not elastic and will break in smaller pieces.
I believe that typical solid tires made of black rubber use split rims for assembly. Even though split rims are illegal, they can be safely used with solid tires as they is no risk of blowout.

There are a fuckload of goatheads where I live and I could never ride more than a mile without getting a flat until I started using Schwalbe marathon dual guards. The rubber on the main part of the tire is like half an inch thick and there is a thin kevlar liner on the inside. They are heavy but I haven't got a flat in like 2 years riding on light dirt paths that used to fuck my shit up.

>> No.2739718

>>2735999
When I was a kid, I got so many flats. My buddy taught me to line the inside of the tire with good duct tape before putting the tube back in. It won't save you for big shit, like a giant nail or something, but i don't remember flats being an issue after I did it. And super simple and cheap.

Just buy quality tires. I did 2000 miles last year on some random old Vittorias with no issue and GP5Ks have been bomb proof for me too. I’d probably resort to running Gatorskins before I went to solid tires. Some people swear by tubeless, as a final option.

They make these plastic strips that go in the tire and outside the inner tube. I think they're called thornsavers. They'll prevent puncture flats but not pinch flats. Once I started using them I never got a flat from thorns or sharp objects again.

Solid tires feel terrible. I tried them for a few months and the traction they have while turning is pretty bad. Things get squirrely whenever you ride over any amount of sand, dirt, or gravel, and the solid tires have a much stronger tendency to center themselves in cracks or divots in sidewalks, road seams, brickwork, etc.
I can't say the resistance to potential puncture was outweighed by the miserable handling and the reduced effectiveness of braking.

Ive never understood how these install. I'd only think basically this, but as a one piece tubeless with a inner bladder just for install, which would seem to serve all the sam thing: not a true airless, but rubber so thick it won't be punctured by nothing, as that is the problem I have with normal thickness tires.

Still the most remarkable thing, whatever reliability tricks of say a Toyota Camry, haven't trickled down to making bikes virtually no maintenance: tubeless so thick they'd almost never pop under human weight, all stainless oil free moving parts. All of which I'd pay for with the delusional yuppie market prices just to not be stuck on then side of the road ever again.
