So I want to build a bookshelf.

My first design was cool, but impractical and out of my budget and way too much strain to actually build with the tools at my disposal.

All I ask of you, is some awesome pieces of furniture to help inspire a new design. I'll be posting what I've saved from my last inspiration search.

Thanks for your time.

>All these tacky art designs.
Just make a beautiful oiled hardwood shelf with a crown moulding and groove jointed shelves. Use wood glue, and probably a lauan backboard because lauan is easy to stain to whatever wood color you want. That is, if you have access to a stocked woodshop. If you don't, you're not gonna efficiently make anything, let alone art pieces.

>>>gonna efficiently

Clearly you don't know much of anything. I make my own tools and the craftsmanship is what counts, the design simply enhances it.

Plus, this is my project for my own desire. I could make almost anything I want, why have it be something standard?

Ok, You have a lot of very artistic inspirations. But it will either hard as hell or labor intensive to build such structures. Or it will be very brittle, and easy to damage design.

I'd bet you those books were bought from used book sales based upon their size and color. The owner has probably never read any of them.

A great bookshelf is any bookshelf with great books on it. Or books that are dear to the reader's heart.

Some people like to live in aesthetic interiors. If you want to live in a shitty looking house because you think that makes you seem more rugged on the internet, that's your business.

As labor intensive as these ideas may be, I'm willing to put my problem solving skills to the test and have been itching to use my craftsmanship, knowledge of design, and problem solving skills to the test.

I figure I'll start off making a couple cool things for myself and if they turn out well and they're practical as well as sturdy, I might start trying to make some pieces to sell.

I tried to work in the golden ratio to my designs, but the picture you posted is too angular for me. I'm trying to add a little bit more of an organic touch to my room with the curves and whatnot.

That's also something I'm trying to eliminate. I want this to be aesthetically pleasing, sturdy, and practical. If I thoroughly enjoy making it and the product turns out well, I may consider trying to make a career out of this.

On that note, anyone actually design/build furniture and the like for a living? Anything I should know/research before trying to make a career out of furniture design?

I mean I suppose you could, if you want a frame made out of ABS. I'm not too sure how expensive a 3d printer is to run or how expensive the material is, so it might not be worth it. I see no reason it couldn't be done though.

A bookcase should be thin enough that laminating two or three pieces of wood together should be easy. You could probably just do it with a heat-gun too. Heat the outside edge of the curve, the wood expands differentially and will make it curve.

Otherwise, get a jig setup for the curve, put a piece of wood on it and clamp it all around. Get your second layer, glue that to the first, clamp it back down. Continue until you're as thick as you want. Glue should hold the laminate in the form of the jig.
