If you solder all the time get a filter. Dont touch your mouth after holding lead solder wire. But I agree, always in my nose.

you probably suck it in with those gorilla nostrils.
if i soldered more i'd get a fume extractor but for the half a dozen times per year it seems pointless.

If you do a lot of soldering, stop by your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore and see if they have any cheap range hoods.

Use a better solder. I use less active flux because Im not trying to solder rusty pipes together and a cheap flux can for the toughest jobs lasts forever.

you can't win. I just blow on it. I am thinking of getting a cheap box fan and putting a carbon filter in front of it and I figure I can also use it to smoke indoors since I'm still a rentcuck

A small fan that is placed physically close to the soldering area will do it. Picrel is a commercial one but you can use like a 4-6 inch desk fan or a larger computer fan.

here's my mockup
two metal round ashtrays. the top one has the bottom cut out and a PC fan is mounted behind it, and then a carbon filter goes over the hole. This way it's kind of like a funnel but it's a little wacky and rustic or whatever

the bottom one is left as is, since it's metal it's a safe place to rest your soldering iron assuming you're a poorfag without a soldering station and it's of course a literal ashtray

there's plenty of different ways to mount them together, even just thick wire would work and you'd be able to adjust the angle of it. Maybe the bottom part would need to be weighted to stand up and not have it all fall down. bonus points if the way they attach together is actually a hinge so you can close it clamshell style

Do you use lead-free solder? If not there may be a potential safety issue here lol.

The fumes are just flux
If your soldering iron is capable of vapourising lead on contract, the lead poisoning is the least of your problems

>> No.2554645

I guess the rising hot air cause a disturbance that pulls more air in

>> No.2554699

nah you're retarded, a 120mm pc fan is more than enough to blow away flux fumes
>>2549778
because your lungs breathing are an air pump and are the only thing pushing air around in the general vicinity, you cant see it but all of the air around you is being pulled towards your mouth and nose, all the time.

Are there really people out there doing enough soldering projects that they worry about this kind of shit? I'd say I use my soldering iron about 6 times a year.

If I was building in bulk, I'd just get the PCBs surface mounted in china for pennies. Let them deal with the fumes.

Make a simple fume extractor from a shop vac and a cutoff section of antifreeze jug or similar. I did works great and you can run the exhaust hose out a window (or through a HEPA filter if trapped indoors).
