I have lots of male/male RCA cables but no females. I want to connect my PS3 to my monitor, but I'm left with no audio. I have my mixer next to my studio monitors so I can easily connect the PS3 to that if I had a female connector. I needed a temporarily solution and this looks like it'll work, just wasn't sure.

You're connecting the negative of one terminal to the positive of the other, and v/versa. So when a positive voltage comes down the line, it comes out of the positive on one plug and into the other, causing the speaker cone to move in the opposite direction as intended.

It is inverting because the ground on each connector is touching the signal on the other connector.
OP that generally is ok for audio, but yes you are inverting the signal. (if you used your method on one speaker, and not the other, and you were playing the same sound on both channels, they would cancel each other out and it would be really quiet.)

For all those people saying "ZOMG YOU'RE INVERTING THE SIGNAL", there is an easy solution.

ATTACH ANOTHER MALE-MALE CABLE WITH ANOTHER ZIP TIE. Invert twice, get the original setup back.

I may be wrong by an RCA jack is not negative/positive "terminals". the electrical signal is sent only through the plug and the outer metal ring is simply a ground. i suppose the in OP's setup the cables become ungrounded and the signal is sent through both the plug and ground ring. this all my own personal hypothesis though. need intelligent EE major to thoroughly explain.

Not gonna bother to read the whole thread, so I'm not sure if I'm just repeating someone else.

If you invert the phase of a mono audio signal, it will sound mostly the same. Basically, you're taking the audio waveform and turning it upside, down. In layman's terms, every time the speaker should be sticking out it will suck in, and vice-versa. This can result in some distortion, but in general, you will not hear it. Just don't count on your speaker setup to be awesome, but if you're using RCA, especially RCA held together with a zip-tie, I assume you are not.

If you insist on doing things this way, just make sure you do it for both speakers. That way, they're both inverted and you won't get any weird cancellation or phasing issues at certain points where the sound waves meet in the room with opposite polarity.

But it's not a closed circuit. It's unlikely, but you could be plugging this ziptie monstrosity into the one stereo in a million that explodes if the signal ground doesn't match up with earth ground.

Personally I'd rather take the time to connect the plugs the right way round, using a rubber band.
