Ok, /diy/ I have a question I have posed to /k/ to no avail. Any of you saw off a shotgun at home? How did you do it? Tips? I want to saw off a H&R topper (to legal limit, of course), I plan to use a hacksaw, and then file the crown smooth. I also plan to cut down the buttstock, and want to know how I would make a recoil pad to fit on the now-nonstandard-sized butt. Pic not mine, but it's what I want mine to look like, but with a shorter butt.

also, DIY sawn off general thread

Pipe cutter and lots of time. Use a larrge bearing and valve lapping compound to smooth out the muzzle crown when done. Make sure to measure multiple times before starting to make sure you stay legal.

You'll be commiting a felony by making the barrel less than 18" as per the National Firearms Act. The overall length of the weapon must be 26" at minimum. If you want a shorter barrel you'll need to put a pistol grip on it. The crown isn't going to be that huge a deal with a smooth cylinder bore. It's gonna pattern like shit either way. What are you gonna do for sights? Solder a bead to the new end of the barrel?

>> No.227370

Laws are different depending on state on SBR (short barreled rifle) sometimes it just a misdemeanor (Wa-fag). If it is a single barrel use a pipe cutter (as suggested) some cutting oil (light grade oil, even olive will work in a pinch), and emery cloth for the finish up, the cutter will leave a nice edge. As far as the pad most are mounted via inset screws so screw it lol, epoxy works good, and maybe a wrap of electrical tape so the rubber wont snag on clothing and set the pad wrong in a hurried situation.
On shotguns this is dead simple so /k/ probably ignored you for asking a "dumb" question, I say measure twice cut once and there are no dumb questions, it takes so little time to offer helpful advise. Good luck be safe OP.

>> No.227392

Sawed offs aren't even very practical. The recoil sucks and sure, they are more maneuverable, but that's only good if you want to sneak it somewhere to do something illegal (which you already did by making an illegally short gun.) If you want something small that fires shot, buy a Taurus Judge, they fires .410 shells and .45 cartridges.

OP here. Imagine I have no metalworking tools other than a hacksaw (collegefag here, no money or room for proper tool collection). What will I need to borrow in order to do this? I imagine I'll need to borrow emery cloth, a round file, and a vise. I've thought of making a metal buttplate, too, any advise on that? You can just use a hacksaw and a small file to smooth it (as long as you don't cut it too short to be illegal) but if the original barrel was choked at all, you're going to see it open up quite a bit.

>> No.227485

OP here's what I did for my Thunderer

and I am from /k/

I cut it down to 18 inches using a hack saw and a vice, I set the angle of the barrel at 45 degrees so it actually cut it on that angle instead of straight down. After the cut I took a dremel and took off the sharp edge then softened it up a bit and metal bonded (the metal bond paste you can get from home depot) a brass bead on the end. It worked well for years until I gave it to my brother in law. Looked unique with the angle cut barrel.

How did it pattern with an angled muzzle? I imagine you got some oblong patterning, right?

>> No.227683

Remember, you can go as short as you damn well please if you get ATF approval. Other than that, it just has to have an OAL of 26(?) inches and you're golden.

Not an issue with a hacksaw.

OP, wrap some making tape around the barrel to mark your spot. This way you'll have a perfect ling all around the barrel. Take your time.

Also, remember, the 18" requirement is measured from the bolt-face on a closed bolt. So make sure to measure with a cleaning rod, and not just a tape measure along the barrel.

Since you don't have much in tools, cut it slow and even out with a file. Make sure the muzzle is smoothed out.

Since the gun is so damn light, you're going to want a proper recoil pad. You can purchase various sized recoil pads, some that are even made to be cut to size. Pachmayr makes such pads, and Brownell's should have them.
Alternatively, find a local gunsmith and politely ask if he has any smaller buttpads in his box of random shit that he'd be willing to sell. Any decent gunsmith will have a box of random shit sitting in his workshop.

Good luck on your project. The hardest part is going to be installing a new bead sight. I think there are some banded front sights available for 12ga shotgun barrels. Easier to install, stronger application.

heat might not be an issue to the barrel but its quite hot to the touch for a while if your going at it, and a small area will take a second to register and you will probably drop it and might damage it that way
also like get pads or something for the vise (sometimes they come with it) unless you want to mark the barrel, and obviously clamp it in the vise as close to where your cutting as you can
just fyi, in case you haven't hacksawed metal before.

>> No.227736

>>227727
For a trim job? Na. Make sure to use oil when cutting and filing/grinding, use a right angle on every direction of the barrel after it's cut to confirm you got the cut right. Mark it with a simple jig by folding an 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch piece of paper into a 2 1/8th inch strip that is 11 inches long, (ie. fold it in half twice.) Align one side of the folded paper with the length mark you placed on the barrel. Wrap the paper around the tubing and pinch the ends of the paper together. When the edges of the folded paper are even, the paper line is straight.

To get the sight reattached take it to a gunsmith, they have special calibrating tools to make this task much easier and for a simple bead sight on a shotty it's pretty cheap.

>all of my why

There are a variety of shotguns that cover all possible firing possibilities. You would need to use both hands to shoot the one in your pic, and you wouldn't be able to aim more than generally. If you want to lay down lots of shot at once, get a Saiga 12.

>> No.227739

>>227731

Going full retard on a gun is a little different than simply shortening the barrel.

Also, out of all the mods listed in the video, the closest thing to "dangerous" was the sling mount on the .22 buttstock. That looks like it might hurt a little bit.

OP: Don't listen to pussies. Shortening a shotgun barrel is easy and not dangerous (unless you're full fucking retard). People do it all the time, because it's cheaper to buy an old hunting shotgun and shortening the barrel to home-defense length. Buying an 18" barrel, alone, costs about as much as a used Rem870 or Moss500. Fuck that.

OP, I'm a WECSOG-certified gunsmith.

As far as the recoil pad, all recoil pads are oversized anyway. After you glue it on, you use a rasp to shape it to size.

Don't cut that barrel to 18.000000000". Cut it to no less than about 18.5". You don't want some asshole cop to screw you over by jamming a measuring tape down the bore and forcing it to measure shorter by bending it around inside. You also don't want to find out that, oops, your filing it smooth made it 17.998".

The proper way to do this is with a lathe, or at least a milling machine. Trim to length with a saw, ok, but then buzz the front off to make it even. With a file, you're just going to make a mess.

barrel: good quality hacksaw blade will do fine, try to keepthe cut straight and square.

recoil pad: cut the stock, keep teh cut parallel to the original butt surface. buy pad, install it on the stock, it should be big enough to hang over on all sides. shape it to the stock with a bench sander.

It's probably because he got burned to death for being a "cawadoody faggot," along with various other /k/omments regarding his mental capacity regarding firearms.

IMO, it's just stupid. Severe amount of spread along with lack of power behind it. You can clear a house with 38" of gun with 18.5" of barrel. If you really feel like you're gonna get the gun yanked out and used to sodomize you, just buy a pistol.

@OP. Unless you want to fuck up the barrel, take it to a gun shop or make a fucking 100% sure you're perfect with a fine-toothed hacksaw. Setting up points around the circumference and sawing between each set will make the cut flawless within reason (pic related.) File down the inside of the barrel and around with 220 and 600 grit sandpaper (it's long and tedious, but damage will be minimal to non-existent.) Dunno if you're gonna keep the front bead or not.

As for the butt? I'd suggest getting a collapsible stock instead of ruining a beautiful wooden butt. But if you're gonna be a cheap bastard, saw it at a perpendicular angle, then buy a pad and trim it down to appropriate size.

Also the gun is the same model as original pic, and they don't actually MAKE folding stocks for it. And the stock was abused from the hillbilly who sold it to me for practically nothing, so I feel no shame cutting it.

question, though, wouldn't the aforementioned tape around the barrel work just as well as your system of points? legit question.

Well, I'm a purist at heart and my grandpa beat every sense of the word perfection into my work. I don't like using tape for the measurement (maybe the tape folds a little, it overlaps a bit.) I just use a tubing cutter to make the line. If you don't mind being off a few millimeters or whatever, go ahead and use the tape, it'll skip over the painful measurements.

A hose clamp as a guide will keep the cut straight. But a pipe cutter is about $15, well worth it. Sell it for $10 afterward.

Theres a legal side of things that you've all missed regarding modifying guns. Namely that if for some reason you DO wind up blowing someones head off in the middle of the night, an attorney can and will use the fact that you specifically modified the weapon. Whether the legal argument makes sense or not is irrelevant; modifying weapons can get you into a lot of needless trouble if you do get into the situation where you have to defend yourself or your loved ones. The unfortunate part is that even if you''ve modified the gun within legal limits, you still may be held guilty by a jury of your peers, who may take umbrage to the fact.

You may look into some less...lethal forms of home defense and, as always, use good judgement when the situation arises.

>> No.228262

Modifying the gun would have nothing to do with the Castle Law here in the states. You can shoot to kill if they're attacking you on your property (in my state even in your car) and it's perfectly legal. The weapon being modified would have no bearing on the right to defend your premises.

The thing about laws is that they get interpreted. If you think a lawyer can't twist a meaning or make it so some legal protection you should have is no longer there, you must not keep very good track of the legal system in the U.S. It's what many do professionally.

Castle doctrine applies "when the actor reasonably fears imminent peril of death or serious bodily harm to himself or another." Additionally, it differs from state to state as to where deadly force can be used and what degree of violence constitutes use of deadly force. There can be A LOT of wiggle room of whether someone justifiably shot someone in self-defense or not, regardless of where it happened.

All I'm saying is that there a chance someone can be brought up on criminal charges (even if they didn't technically do anything wrong) and they will want to give a prosecuting lawyer as few points to attack your case with as possible. So, is it worth having a modded out shotgun for home defense? I'm not so sure.
