i'm saving up to get a little robot kit to patrol my house (or at least my basement). it'll have an xbee and an arduino on it. planning to install ROS on my server and plug an xbee into that as well.
the kit has a PING))) sensor on a 180deg servo so i figure that if i add another couple of ir sensors on it that i can get some reasonable sensor data.

i've thought about doing some ridic primitive SLAM (since the little bugger is connected to my server computation isn't a problem) but the kit has no real way to measure distance traveled.

i don't want to make just an odometer because i'm afraid that my cheapo kit will not have nice wheels, and they'll be noisy as hell. and i don't want to set up waypoints if i don't have to.

An accelerometer can be a good replacement for a wheel based odometer. If the robot will be in a set area a webcam to pick up a light on it will work.
