The kitchen I found was not a great place for engine work as they just tend to get in the way of somewhere you use a bit more
Laundry however, is fucking great because you're only there maybe 1-2 times a week and if you're living with someone, most modern women will never venture in there if they can help it even less than they spend in a kitchen.

Really the best way to deal with it is to just get a shed or garage and just spend as much time in there away from other people
