Graphing calculators are stupid expensive and do to my last calculus teaching being a dick I had to buy a TI-nspire (pic related) without the computer algebra solver feature. I've finished with that course and now I have a $130 hunk of shit that can't solve for X, which is not terribly useful for my current course load (Computer Science). I really don't want to drop another $100+ on another calculator thats nearly identical just for CAS and since the nspire has been hacked I figured someone might have figured out how to enable CAS in the lesser model. My current teacher doesn't give a shit what kind of calculator we use as long as we get our work done so this isn't about cheating on tests or anything (I've advanced beyond pure math courses). Anyone have any ideas?

Are you retarded? Did you even read my post? I don't want to *just* hack the npsire, I want to do a specific thing : enable CAS in a non-CAS model. If I wanted to program for the nspire or run a gameboy emulator on it Ndless is the ticket, but I can't find out how to enable CAS with it, if it even can. So I asked here. Pay more attention next time prick. Pic related, its you.

This is do-it-yourself, not "I don't have any idea how to do something and instead of just being better at math I want you all to tell me how to hack calculators so I can forever avoid doing basic fucking algebra."

Go get fucked.

So I guess you just use this board to post pics of your stupid crap and jerk off over the responses right? Look around, 90% of the topics here are people looking for help, suggestions or asking questions. Feel free to take your own advice though.

See, that post you linked is my problem. Every time I see a mention of adding CAS to a non-CAS model the response is always an oblique reference to look around on the forum or google it or whatever. Nowhere is there a post or guide outlining how to actually do what I need. Your searching skills are clearly better than mine, are you able to dig up anything like what I need?

They weren't terrible helpful. Couple of "nope"s is all I got out of them. Based on a post I was able to dig up it seems the only way to do it is install Ndless and OSLauncher and use that to load the CAS version of the OS into RAM every time you start the calculator. Its not ideal but I'll see if I can make it work.

>> No.202637

If you've really "advanced beyond pure math courses", then you shouldn't need a calculator for pretty much anything. Most pure math courses are essentially proofs and more proofs.

Unless you mean you're moving on to applied math instead. If you're doing work outside of class, you could probably use WolframAlpha to do all the more mundane calculations. As far as I know, there's no way to put computer algebra systems onto the Nspire. Try selling it for maybe 90$ and buying a CX CAS or something.

>> No.202708

>>202637

Yes, that is what I mean. I'm no longer doing math for maths sake, it is now a means to a different end. I was able to find a method to get CAS on a non-CAS nspire. For those also looking for such info here is what you need to do.

1) Research, download and install ndless.
2) Ditto OSLaunch 2.0 (3.1 is buggy).
3) Get a copy of the nspire CAS OS that most closely matches the one you have installed on your nspire (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?topic=4776.0 for quick links to officer TI downloads)
4) Every time you calculator loads up you'll have to load the CAS OS as its only loaded into RAM, not installed on the calculator.

Thats the best you can do so far. Try to match the CAS OS version with your non-CAS OS. It doesn't install it but it does use files stored in the installed OS so if its too different you *might* have issues. YMMV.

yea, pretty much. We dumpster dive for non-arduino microcontrollers too.

now...don't get me wrong, maybe I'm underthinking this.

why not sell your hunk of shit for $75 instead of $130, and spend the $75 to buy one of those other hunks of shit you're talking about? Post on CL and you'll sell it. Shit, shout out your offer in a cafeteria and you'll sell it.

Love to. The CAS version (what I need) costs more than the non-CAS version (what I got), so I wouldn't be able to afford it even if I got it used. And with a newer generation of nspire out I probably wouldn't get even half of what I paid for my current nspire. Basically, if I want CAS I either have to hack it, shell out more money, or steal it. I'm already getting raped on textbooks and their gutted return value so I'll just stick with the hack for now. Maybe if I can find a job in this shit economy I'll be able to get an upgraded calc.

Don't bother with them mate, they are a crock of shit. Just like textbooks they are over priced and not worth the cost. TI-89s have CAS and they can sometimes be had cheaper. HP and Casio also make models with CAS, all of them are over priced too.

My school only allows TI calcs or I would have gotten a Casio (color screen for the win). That said, it doesn't help me now because I can't afford a calc at any price at this point.

While I can't afford a cell phone bill I might be able to get an old phone from a friend or something. I'll look into that. Thanks.

I start the class next fall but I was told I would be doing intermediate algebra level stuff to start when I spoke to the instructor. A level two course follows which has calc level stuff in it. I don't know if this helps but the course is called "Physics for Scientists and Engineers I" and has calc 1 and 2 as pre-reqs.
