I decided to make three sturdy canes from solid oak dowel rods, stained dark cherry and finished with several coats of hard, high-gloss polyurethane varnish. I started by cutting them to a length of 24 inches, sanded them smooth, and rounded off the sharp corners for safety's sake. Once they're done drying, I'll wrap the handles with gutted paracord.

Oak, being a very hard wood, has little springback, making these somewhat untraditional canes. That said, I love the sensation all the same, and I don't foresee myself swinging them hard enough to snap the comparatively brittle wood or reaching a personal level of pain tolerance that would have the same effect. All in all, a good beginner's weapon, well-suited to practice and rather attractive in appearance. The light weight of the wood makes it's nearly impossible to cause anyone serious injury.

Friendly Plastic/Shapeloc/Polymorph (all different brand names for Polycaprolactone) can be shaped into anything you want and it pretty strong.

According to Wikipedia it has been approved by the FDA for certain implantable medical devices, so it should also be safe to use for certain insertable devices (wink wink).

Mostly it depends on how much cash and time you have. Lots of cash = buy all the things! No cash and lots of free time = make your own out of damn near anything. Wooden spoons and hair brushes make cheap paddles. Several lengths of rope can be doubled over, tied at the loop, and frayed at the ends to make a wide variety of floggers. Wooden dowel rods are made into canes. Clusters of small rods, acetal rods, and sometimes fiberglass (though beware of splintering/shattering!) can be made into synthetic birching rods. If you're really confident in your abilities and have a sub that likes it really rough, steel dowel rods can be used as canes, too. That can break bones though, so be careful!

If you have the cash to drop on toys, by all means do so. A good flogger runs from $70-300 and up. A nice whippy rattan cane can go for as little as $5, though it won't be very fancy. If you're like most people, you can still rack up an insane variety out of household items. Or, go without or borrow toys. The palm of your hand or a bundle of twigs soaked in brine can be just as punishing as a good cane. ;)

Personally, I always try to give my homemade toys a bit of flare. I like to think it makes them look more professional and a bit more intimidating. to start off we have a small paddle made from a piece of 1/4"x1/2" aluminum stock. The head of the paddle is ABS that will later be sanded smooth on the edges and possible have some studs put in it to add to the effect. Ive found that this stock is just springy enough to allow a little room for error when it comes to playtime but not so soft that it just bends.

and one of my personal favorites, the syringe nipple puller. Just chop the end off of a small syringe and sand down the edges so that they wont rip into your playmate flesh. These things work wonders

what i have found works amazing for this is you get a pair of handcuffs (not too cheap) and cut the center link of the chain. This allows you to link one cuff to each end of the spreader bar on an eyelet screw and makes for a very very effective restraint. see attached sketch

also when it comes to coating new toys that are going to be impact based (crops, paddles, exc) I've found that a VERY thin coat of plastidip spray works wonders to make them both sturdy, safe, and damn sexy looking.

Fiddling with shaping and layering to make something like rigid steel cuffs out of the leather. It ends up with a very unusual finish compared to dressed leather, rubber or other materials.
